BEIJING, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu on Sunday urged local authorities to intensify efforts to prevent forest fires. The senior Chinese official also ordered the country's forest fire prevention departments to come up with emergency response measures to be implemented as soon as fires break out.Hui warned that the country faced severe challenges from forest fires as the drought in the north continued and there was less rain than normal in the south in February.A total of 168 forest fires were recorded from Feb. 2 to Feb. 6, according to monitoring stations from the country's forest fire management authority. On Saturday, a forest blaze killed six people and left another three injured in east China's Zhejiang Province. Local officials said fireworks were the likely cause of the tragedy.

BEIJING, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- China plans to dig 1,350 wells in eight major wheat-growing provinces to help ease the ongoing drought that is threatening the country's grain harvest, said the Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR) on Friday. The ministry will establish an anti-drought and well drilling operation headquarters and three front working teams in north China, Huanghuai area - along the Yellow and Huai rivers - and northwest China, said the MLR at a video conference. Also, China Geological Survey, an institution directly under the MLR, will transfer experienced technicians from its nine affiliated units to form three emergency squads and 12 emergency groups to assist local governments in finding water in those regions, said the MLR.Further, the MLR will send geological survey teams from its nine affiliated units and eight provinces, including Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou, to the eight provinces, it said. The survey teams will bring 100 sets of advanced geophysical prospecting instruments and 320 sets of drill machines to dig 1,350 wells to ease the water shortages affecting people and livestock, especially those in mountainous areas, and strengthen local irrigation, it noted. The eight provinces include Shandong, Henan, Hubei, Anhui, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu and Jiangsu, which are China's major wheat-producing regions and have been severely affected by months-long drought. The MLR had previously put in place a series of measures to relieve drought and find water, such as making underground water layout maps and sending experts to drought-hit regions to give technical guidance, said the MLR.As of 3 p.m. Thursday, the drought had affected 101.28 million mu (6.75 million hectares) of crops nationwide and left 2.81 million people and 2.57 million livestock short of drinking water, said the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.

WASHINGTON, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Study by scientists at the Rockefeller University shows that anti-inflammatory drugs reduce the effectiveness of the most widely used class of antidepressant medications, the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), taken for depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety disorders. This discovery, published online Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, may explain why so many depressed patients taking SSRIs do not respond to antidepressant treatment and suggests that this lack of effectiveness may be preventable. The study may be especially significant in the case of Alzheimer's disease. Such patients commonly suffer from depression and unless this can be treated successfully, the course of the illness is likely to be more severe. Depression in the elderly is also a risk factor for developing Alzheimer's Disease and researchers have suggested that treating depression in the elderly might reduce the risk of developing the disease. In the recent study, investigators treated mice with antidepressants in the presence or absence of anti-inflammatory drugs. They then examined how the mice behaved in tasks that are sensitive to antidepressant treatment. They found that the mice's behavioral responses to antidepressants were inhibited by anti- inflammatory/analgesic treatments. They then confirmed these effects in a human population. Depressed individuals who reported anti-inflammatory drug use were much less likely to have their symptoms relieved by an antidepressant than depressed patients who reported no anti- inflammatory drug use. The effect was rather dramatic since, in the absence of any anti-inflammatory or analgesic use, 54 percent of patients responded to the antidepressant, whereas success rates dropped to approximately 40 percent for those who reported using anti-inflammatory agents."Many elderly individuals suffering from depression also have arthritic or related diseases and as a consequence are taking both antidepressant and anti-inflammatory medications. Our results suggest that physicians should carefully balance the advantages and disadvantages of continuing anti-inflammatory therapy in patients being treated with antidepressant medications," leader author Paul Greengard said.

BEIJING, March 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Well-educated and well-paid single Chinese women were at the forefront of a boom in travel by the country's women in 2010.According to the 2010 Trend Report of Women's Travel, the amount of travel by Chinese women increased by 20 percent last year, with well-educated and well-paid single women becoming the main force in the tourism market.Travel expenditure per capita by women on the Chinese mainland was 4,300 yuan (5) in 2010, and the 20-percent year-on-year rise was much larger than the 9- percent increase for men.Qunar.com, the world's largest online travel search engine in Chinese, released the report. The Beijing-based site was launched in 2005. According to Dai Zheng, vice-president of Qunar.com, women's growing spending power has led to more of them choosing travel as a way to cosset themselves, especially well-educated and well-paid single women, who travel for relaxation and self-improvement.Zhang Jing, 31, who works for a consulting company in Shanghai and earns nearly 20,000 yuan monthly, spent 15,000 yuan on travel last year, including a trip to the Tibet autonomous region in Southwest China and another to Singapore."Travel not only releases work pressure, but also opens up my horizon on the world. I like to see and experience how others live," said Zhang, who plans to visit Thailand in May with two female friends who are both around 30 years of age."Women are active in all of our travel projects. I definitely feel that it's mostly women who are interested in our products," said Zhao Huijin, who works in the booking center of the E-commerce department of China International Travel Service (CITS).Zhao's remarks to China Daily were echoed by the report, which said more than 65 percent of decisions about travel products and travel expenditure were made by women. In addition, women tended to be more demanding of hotels, and preferred to comment and find fault with hotels. On the forum at Qunar.com, women made nearly 70 percent of the comments on hotels.Women's more active participation in travel means that when the industry's decision-makers develop new travel products they take greater note of women's views about travel. In recent years, products targeted at women have appeared, such as women's hotels, certain hotel floors especially reserved for women, and travel themed around shopping, healthcare and relaxation.Le Meridien, a five-star hotel in Xiamen, Fujian province, set up a floor tailored for women customers in July 2010.Adding to the high quality of certain facilities that women care about most, such as excellent sound insulation, the 32 suites on this floor are also equipped with products especially for women, including fresh fruits, low-calorie food, yoga mats, bath salts, facial masks and hangers for silk clothes."These rooms are warmly appreciated by ladies, and we hope to meet women customers' needs both physically and psychologically through appropriate care," said Wang Yan, assistant manager of the hotel's marketing and communication department. The report also revealed that women's choice of destination is strongly influenced by fashion. They enjoy traveling to scenic spots featured in the latest romantic movies and TV dramas.
