SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Despite not being on the state's watch list, San Diego County leaders warn it could be a matter of days before the region joins 19 other counties being monitored for rising coronavirus cases.Wednesday, County leaders and health officials mapped out the path that will result in the county avoiding or making California's County Monitoring List. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Food banks across San Diego say demand is up, and volunteering is down as the Coronavirus pandemic spreads."There are a lot of unknowns right now," says James Floros, the CEO of the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank.Floros says they've already had dozens of volunteer groups cancel their upcoming shifts, as the CDC and state and local governments advise against any large gatherings.Meanwhile, he says demand is skyrocketing, since many people are losing money from reduced shifts, or losing access to meals they get from work, communal gatherings or other places."We know a lot of the service industry are getting laid off, school closures, what have you," says Floros. "So, we're creating our plans to ramp up our service to the community."The Food Bank serves 350,000 people a year, providing food to numerous outreach groups who then distribute it to people who are food insecure.But as distributions become harder to coordinate with new social distancing guidelines, groups are having to rethink the way they get food to those who need it."we have to reinvent the paradigm and figure out ways to get food to people who are self-isolating," says Vince Hall, the CEO of Feeding San Diego. "Because they're complying with the edicts of health officials, but they're cut off from the food that keeps them healthy."Hall says his group has canceled all group volunteer events. But they're still allowing people to volunteer on an individual basis to help deliver food.The food banks also encourage donations."It makes me sad," says Hall. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Despite having the most coronavirus cases of any local university, large off-campus parties continue to be an issue for San Diego State University and nearby residents.Students living off-campus have been attending large parties, according to neighbors. As of Saturday, SDSU had 1,184 COVID-19 cases, 767 of those cases being reported in off-campus students.Locals living in the College Area says many students continue to ignore public health orders and hold large, loud parties with no physical distancing or mask wearing."It's really frustrating and at this point, I feel like there's not a lot that we can do because you know those people, they're just going to keep doing what they're doing," one neighbor said.In a statement to ABC 10News' reporting partner KPBS, San Diego State says more than a hundred notices of violations have been delivered to residences in the college area.The university also contracts elite security to keep an eye on the neighborhood surrounding the school for any violations. If a security guard notices a party, they call police to respond.As of Friday, Cal State San Marcos had reported 18 total COVID-19 cases, three of which were off-campus. At UC San Diego, there have been 106 coronavirus cases since March 1, with three being reported since Oct. 1. Since Aug. 16, the University of San Diego has reported 130 confirmed and 17 probable cases, with 127 COVID-19 cases being non-residential students. 1465

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Distance learning is now possible for more than 7,000 San Diego County families who had little or no internet access before the pandemic. The County Office of Education has been working for months to get those students online and have plans to help even more.Before COVID-19 hit, the county estimates one in five families had no internet or were considered “under-connected” by not having a connection strong enough to support distance learning.Isabel Estrada was one of those students.“Sometimes it would cut out during class time and I would miss something or have to email my teachers of why it kept cutting out,” said the freshman at Oceanside High School.The County Office of Education has been working for months to bridge the digital gap. So far, they’ve provided more than 7,000 mobile hotspots to families in need.Once Isabel’s family got a hot spot she says she felt more confident signing on to class.“We’re just really grateful because the internet right now, it’s me and my sister so it helps both of us with school,” said Isabel.At a press conference Thursday, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher announced million from the general fund will be used to help connect another 4,000 families.“That digital divide went from something that we needed to address, to something we had to address when our promise of public education moved virtually,” said Fletcher.The million will be divided among 19 districts identified as having the greatest need.
