EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Grossmont College and the office of Senator Joel Anderson came together for the eighth year in a row to honor the victims of September 11th. The day before the ceremony, volunteers put up 2,977 flags one for each life taken that September morning. San Diego native and 9/11 survivor, Bill Hay, was the keynote speaker for the memorial. Hay was on the 55th floor of the north tower when the first plane hit.Hay is 89-years-old and a Marine veteran with two purple hearts. He says he shares his story every year because he doesn't want younger generations to forget about what happened. The ceremony included other speakers from Grossmont College, CAL-FIRE and students from Steele Canyon High School.  755

Dreher Township, PA (WNEP) -- Parents are expressing concern after a church announced it will hold a ceremony next week, and worshipers are encouraged to bring assault rifles with them, and the ceremony will be just down the road from an elementary school.The ceremony in Wayne County was planned before the mass shooting at a high school in Florida last week.Church leaders still plan to go ahead with the blessing of guns, which has some parents of elementary school students on edge.Sanctuary Church and Rod of Iron Ministries are one in the same, run by the Moon family from South Korea who started the controversial Unification Church.Church leaders said that state police wanted to know what the ceremony next week involving AR-15-style assault rifles is all about.At 10 a.m. next Wednesday, church leaders expect up to 600 people for a blessing ceremony, and many of those people are expected to be armed with AR-15s, the assault rifle used in recent mass shootings across the country."This will be a big thing for us. It's a new stage for us because it incorporates the rod of iron, as it is in Revelations. Revelations talks about the returning Christ ruling with the rod of iron."Tim Elder sat down with WNEP to explain the beliefs of the church, led by the Reverend Sean Moon.Moon is the son of the late Sun Myung Moon, who founded the controversial Unification Church that drew national attention in the 1970s and '80s. The Rod of Iron Ministries is an offshoot of that religious organization focusing on what it believes is the right of families to defend themselves with assault rifles."This rod of iron is the AR-15, in today's terms."The Moon family also owns Kahr Arms, a gunmaker that moved to Pike County a couple years ago. WNEP was at the opening ceremony at that time in Blooming Grove Township.Church leaders say the AR-15s will not be loaded for the ceremony next week and safety zip ties will be used. However, state police are involved. Elder says troopers have reached out for more information.Just down the road from the church is Wallenpaupack South Elementary School with 280 students, plus teachers and staff. In light of recent gun violence at schools, the planned ceremony with assault rifles is concerning for parents."It's something I would consider keeping my child home. It's scary," said Liz Zoccola."I wish they wouldn't have it at all. EL CAJON (KGTV) -- In response to growing concerns of the rapidly spreading coronavirus, Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District officials have announced that they will be canceling in-person classes for a week as a precautionary measure.Grossmont and Cuyamaca college campuses will close the week of March 16-20 and temporarily shift to online instruction as a precautionary measure.“We are taking these extraordinary measures out of an abundance of caution,” said Chancellor Lynn Neault. “We are doing everything we can to ensure a safe and healthy environment for our students, employees and the public, while ensuring that our student can complete their classes.”The colleges join numerous local and national institutions that are also announcing face-to-face instruction to quell the spread of coronavirus, including Chula Vista's Southwestern College, San Diego State University, and USD.Non-instructional employees will be on site during their regular work hours, according to officials."All student events for the next two weeks are canceled, and intercollegiate athletics games are cancelled through March 29. Staff and student travel on district business outside of the state and country has been cancelled, and in-state travel is being reviewed on a case-by-case basis," officials said.“We recognize the challenges imposed by these measures, and we regret any difficulties to students or faculty, but the health and safety of our campus communities is our utmost responsibility,” said Linda Cartwright, president of the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District Governing Board. (KGTV) - A man and a woman were taken into custody following a carjacking and a string of robberies targeting San Diego convenient stores early Tuesday morning.The crime spree started around 1 a.m. when the couple allegedly carjacked a victim in El Cajon.Minutes later, the couple drove to a 7-Eleven store near the intersection of San Carlos Drive and Bisby Lake Avenue, police said.A male suspect armed with a handgun walked into the store while the clerk was preparing the register for the day, San Diego Police Officer John Buttle said.CRIME NEWS: Man hospitalized following deputy-involved shooting in Lemon GroveThe armed man reached over the counter and took money out the register, then the suspect ran out of the store. The couple fled in an unknown direction with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.Moments later, a second 7-Eleven was robbed in Spring Valley. According to police, the suspects drove off in a car matching the description of the vehicle used in the Lake Murray incident.The couple then arrived at a third store on North Euclid in National City. The 7-Eleven clerk at the store said they "had a bad feeling about the couple" and alerted police, officers told 10News.
