CLINTON, Mo. — A Clinton police officer died and two other officers were hurt in a shooting at a home in the small Missouri town late Tuesday evening.Ofc. Christopher Ryan Morton died in the shooting, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Bill Lowe said officers responded to a 911 call at 9:20 p.m. local time in which a woman was screaming in the background. When police arrived at the home, Sgt. Lowe said a man fired at the responding officers from inside the residence.The officers then returned fire and went inside the home. When they went inside, the suspect shot and killed one officer and hurt two others.The officers got out of the home and crews took them to the hospital.The suspect then barricaded himself inside.Around 12:10 am, the Highway Patrol SWAT team went into the home and found the suspect dead. It is not yet known if the suspect died as a result of the gun battle with police or if it was self-inflicted.The injured officers were receiving treatment at hospitals in the Kansas City area, and according to Sgt. Lowe, their injuries are not life-threatening."The Clinton Police Department is a well respected police department," said Sgt. Lowe. "They will forge on, but they will need help along the way. We are all saddened by this tragic event. It's one of those things that we realize can happen, but when it does happen, it definitely hits home."Cassie Toliver, who lives near where the shooting took place, said police vehicles, sirens and lights quickly filled the streets and law enforcement barricaded the area from both sides. In a phone interview with Scripps station KSHB in Kansas City just after 11 p.m. Tuesday night, Toliver said she could hear gun shots around 10:50 p.m. Tuesday."We can still hear shots being fired," said Toliver. "We don’t whether that’s the shooter or the cops because it’s so dark outside.”The two women who called 911 were not injured, Sgt. Lowe said. "We will be speaking with them right away."Sgt. Lowe said Morton had been with the department for a while."It's hard to put into words what you go through when you have an officer killed in the line of duty," said Sgt. Lowe.Tuesday night's shooting happened exactly seven months after Clinton police officer Gary Michael was shot and killed in the line of duty. "It's just another tragic event for this community and this police department," Sgt. Lowe said. "They've endured a lot and they are going to endure more. Everyone's thoughts and prayers would be appreciated."Sgt. Colleges are trying to figure out how students can safely get back to school, as more schools are choosing to go online only for the fall.For colleges that will have students on-campus, a big question is how testing could work. This week, Maryland's state universities are some of the latest to say they will test students if they can't prove they had a negative test within 14 days of arriving on-campusResearchers from Yale, Harvard and Massachusetts General Hospital have a model of what they say needs to happen for campuses to reopen.It includes testing students every two days along with strict social distancing measures“There are still schools out there who think they can get by with symptom-based monitoring,” said David Paltiel of Yale Public Health. “That is waiting until a student develops symptoms before springing into action. We have run simulations and scenarios over and over again. We have yet to find a single one where that is good enough.”Experts believe screening frequency is more important than test accuracy. But they say daily testing could lead to false positives. They think testing every two days will cost 0 per student per semester.“Any school that cannot see how it's going to reasonably implement a program of frequent screening alongside a program of social distancing really has to ask itself if it has any business reopening,” Paltiel said.Vassar College President Elizabeth Bradley looked at how the model would work for them. She wrote in the journal JAMA they would have a controllable number of infections, even if they only tested students every four weeks.They would also use social distancing, masks, and contact tracing. If I don’t win the lotto, there’s no hope that that’s ever going away,” Denise said. “My house only cost ,000 if that puts anything in perspective.”The average student loan debt for graduates is about ,000. Worst case scenario is that there is some forgiveness or some relief and now you have choices,” DiTullio said. He also suggests borrowers "earn differently" during the pandemic if they have to, to avoid defaulting. COVID-19 has killed more than 50,000 people in nursing homes and long-term care facilities. That is at least 40% of all U.S. coronavirus deaths.The White House put in new measures recently to better protect residents.“The numbers are continuing to rise. We're just beginning to get some of the numbers out of some of the states and so this is a real outrage,” said Bill Sweeney, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs at AARP. “It didn't have to be this way, and this is a national disgrace.”AARP says required virus case data from facilities is happening too late. They're about a week behind and testing isn't consistent.Some facilities are still having issues with PPE, including training staff to wear it properly.Both Republicans and Democrats want to give more help to nursing homes in the next relief bill.AARP is concerned about the lack of inspections and oversight. It worries some facilities will get immunity from lawsuits.“Without inspections, without the ombudsman being able to go in and find out what’s going on in the facilities, without family visits being allowed, there's been no accountability at all and if they give immunity to these nursing homes, there won’t ever be accountability,” said Sweeney. “There will never be justice for families whose loved ones were treated poorly.”Before the pandemic, AARP says eight out of ten nursing homes were cited for infection control problems.Meanwhile, AARP encourages family members to call their representative in Congress if they are worried about their loved one and are not getting answers. 1573
