The White House released official portraits of President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence Tuesday morning.According to an official press release from the White House, the portraits were produced by the Government Publishing Office. The photos will be distributed and displayed in the offices of federal agencies across the country. The walls of federal agencies have been a bit bare since Jan. 20, when former President Barack Obama's portrait was taken down in all federal agencies following the inauguration. A September story by the Washington Post reported that the Trump administration was slow to release an official portrait — Obama's portrait was released by March of his first year in office, President Bill Clinton's was released by June. The White House also says the photographs will be made available for sale to the public.  859

The St. Louis Police Department is investigating one of their own after he issued a ticket to a man who honked at him.According to an interview in the Riverfront Times, Scott Smith was on his way back to work when he honked at a car stopped at a green light. Video shot by the driver and given to the RFT shows a very tense interaction. The car was an unmarked police car. When pulled over, Smith says "seriously?"The officer than replies "Seriously, is your horn stuck?" to which Smith replies "Is your brake stuck?"That's when the officer cusses at the driver asking again "Is your f-ing horn stuck?"He demands to see his driver's license.Smith says he will, but asks for what."I'll tell you what, you can either show your driver's license or you'll get a ticket and I'll tow your car and lock you up," said the officer.Once again Smith asks why he's been pulled over and the officer says it is for a traffic violation."For honking at someone who's stopped at a green light?" Smith asks. He then calls the situation "f-ing ridiculous." "Well you know what? Maybe you shouldn't be a f-ing a-hole," the officer responds. The officer issued the driver a ticket, but the city counselor's office reportedly will not prosecute it, saying they do not believe it should be pursued."The Department has launched an Internal Affairs investigation into the incident you are inquiring about. At this point, it would be premature for the Department to comment on an ongoing investigation before it concludes," a St. Louis Police spokesperson said.  1557

The town of Blandford in western Massachusetts has a population of about 1,200 people, served by a four-person police force. As of Monday night, there were zero town police officers working to serve them.A mass resignation of Blandford's entire police department, led by Interim Police Chief Roberta Sarnacki, occurred after they claim they endured unsafe working conditions."We regret leaving the town without a town police force," Sarnacki and her three officers said in a statement, "but we have no choice given the situation we face."Blandford residents are still able to call 911 in an emergency, and can contact Massachusetts State Police for other concerns. 671

The University of Arizona and Boeing joined forces to find disinfectants that will kill COVID-19 and help make air travel safer. The project known as the Confident Travel Initiative is designed to test out cleaning solutions that can destroy the Coronavirus. Arizona microbiology professor Dr. Charles Gerba, who is known as "Dr. Germ," says he’s been working with Boeing since the summer to test cleaning products as part of the initiative to make flying as safe as possible during the pandemic and beyond.“It's really innovative to try to get a coating that will be antiviral," he said. "I think it’s the next step in hygiene and disinfection adding another barrier between when they clean and regularly disinfect aircraft. We’re looking at coatings. And anytime the virus lands on it would kill it, so you don’t have to keep disinfecting all the time."The team conducted laboratory testing by using a virus called MS2 on surfaces inside of an unoccupied plane. The virus has similar characteristics to the virus that causes COVID-19.“It would protect you from when they disinfect it or clean the aircraft. In case the virus lands again on a surface in the aircraft. We’ve been evaluating the overhead bins, the seats, the trays, the handles,” Gerba said.Cleaning solutions and ultraviolet wands were also used throughout the plane and according to Boeing, the results show that antimicrobial coatings were effective for extended periods of time and won’t be harmful to passengers. While Gerba didn’t share the names of the disinfectants, he did say the products can potentially be used on public transportation and other high traffic areas.“We actually did some of the work in the aircraft going in and contaminating certain areas like the tray in the aircraft the overhead bin and then evaluating the disinfectants to show they could kill the virus," Gerba said. "I see this new technology of self-disinfecting surfaces will revolutionize public places in cleanliness, cars, and buses you name it. These are products already on the market and they are new innovative products where you can put down a coating and it will last for hours, weeks, or maybe even months."The research project is expected to be done with other viruses by the end of the year and airplane cleanings will be done between flights.“It all has a big benefit I think it's going to add that extra barrier to me it’s the next generation of infection control and the spread of disease,” Gerba said. This story was first reported by Shawndrea Thomas at KGUN Tucson, Arizona. 2552

The US Forest Service hopes families will want to end 2020 with a live tree, preferably one cut from a national forest.Cutting down a Christmas tree is a tradition for many, and a healthy tradition for the forests as smaller trees get thinned out.“By cutting your own tree, you take an active part in managing your national forests,” according to the US Forest Service webpage.Tree hunters should look for an area of tightly-knit, dense trees and pick one from there. This will in turn give the surrounding trees more space to grow, Hillary Santanez, recreation event coordinator with the White River National Forest, explained to KMGH.Thinning the forests in this fashion reduces competition for resources and nutrients so the other trees can grow stronger and healthier, Santanez said. It also helps the trees handle stressful environmental situations, such as drought. In addition, thinning dense forests can help with wildfire mitigation.Families who have a fourth or fifth grader can get a free permit from the Every Kid Outdoors initiative through the US Forest Service. Otherwise, permits to cut down a tree in a national forest run to depending on the park. Permits are required. All permit sales are online for 2020, along with maps, how to select a tree, guidance for cutting it down and safety reminders. Like, dressing for the cold, possibly dark and snowy forest conditions. The different parks have different rules about where a Christmas tree can be cut down from, usually it has to be about 200 feet from roads and campgrounds."You want to make sure that you're not trespassing on private property, so going onto our website and downloading a map is essential so that you can make sure that you're staying on forest land because a lot of the forest land, especially in the Front Range area, is really adjacent to private property, and you have to make sure that you're following the law while you're up there," Pike and San Isabel National Forests and Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands Public Affairs Officer Crystal Young told KOAA News. There are height and trunk size requirements as well to make sure tree hunters are taking the smaller trees to help thin out forests.
