A controversial sanctuary city bill will become law in Tennessee without Governor Bill Haslam's signature. State lawmakers overwhelmingly passed HB2315, which prohibits cities and counties from adopting policies that would protect undocumented immigrants from federal agents. Haslam said Monday that the bill has created a lot of unnecessary fear in the state and doesn’t change the way the state deals with federal immigration agencies. When was asked why he wouldn’t veto the bill, Haslam said it’s because it would just prolong the discussion, adding there aren't currently have any sanctuary cities in Tennessee. The so-called sanctuary city bill requires law enforcement officials to comply with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement rules, including detainer requests.   837

Jurors returned to court Wednesday for his sentencing, where prosecutors sought at least 60 years, while the defense argued for 20 years or less.Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson called Oliver a "killer in blue" who violated his oath to protect citizens. A lock of Abraham Lincoln’s hair, wrapped in a bloodstained telegram about his 1865 assassination, is up for sale. Boston-based RR Auction says bidding has opened online for the items ahead of a live auction scheduled for Sept. 12. Measuring roughly 2 inches long, the bushy lock of hair was removed during Lincoln’s postmortem examination after he was fatally shot at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., by John Wilkes Booth. The auction house says it was given to Dr. Lyman Beecher Todd, a Kentucky postmaster and a cousin of Mary Todd Lincoln, the 16th president’s widow. 582

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck northwest of Canada's Vancouver Island late Sunday, according to the United States Geological Survey. It was one of a trio of earthquakes to occur in quick succession on the same fault line.The US Geological Survey said the preliminary 6.6-magnitude earthquake was 6.8 miles deep, about 135 miles southwest of Port Hardy, a town on the northeastern end of Vancouver Island. It occurred at 10:39 p.m. local time (1:39 a.m. Monday ET), according to the USGS.The 6.8-magnitude quake came about 35 minutes later and was centered about 12 miles closer to Port Hardy at a depth of about 6 miles, the USGS said.An aftershock, registering a magnitude of 6.5, followed about six minutes later, the USGS said.The USGS did not predict damage from the quakes,?forecasting they would be felt only lightly. A man is hospitalized, but expected to survive, after his girlfriend struck him with her car following a domestic argument, according to police in Port St. Lucie, Florida.The incident happened in the 1900 block of W. Dunbrooke Circle.Police said the man got out of the car and began walking down the street and the woman then dropped off her baby at their house, drove back to where the man was walking and hit him.Video posted by police shows crime scene tape around a car which appears to have a big dent in the hood and a shattered windshield.The man, described as the woman's 24-year-old live-in boyfriend, was airlifted to a hospital with head trauma.  He was undergoing surgery late Wednesday afternoon.Police did not identify either person but said the investigation continues. “It sounded like a car hitting a shopping cart," said Lance Chmura who lives just across the street from the crash scene. He was making breakfast around 9 a.m. when he heard the impact and ran out to help.“I went down, grabbed his hand and stabilized him because he was starting to thrash around a bit," said Chmura.The impact of the crash was so intense it sent the man flying 35 yards down the street.“She (the girlfriend) then left the scene, drove back home.  Her relative got in car and came back to the scene," said Master Sgt. Frank Sabol with Port St. Lucie Police.The victim’s grandmother would not reveal what the girlfriend said to her immediately after the crash, but said the couple had a good relationship and had just moved down here last month. She said she thinks this was an accident.“I think they were just playing around and didn’t realize the severity of it," said the grandmother.“The initial investigation determines she was on the wrong side of the road when he was struck," added Sgt. Sabol.Right now, it’s being investigated as a case of domestic violence. No arrests have been made.  1948
