SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Five baby foxes were rescued from a South Bay construction site after a worker spotted them below a pile of cement rocks set for destruction.A construction worker at an Otay Mesa work site alerted his manager to the a Grey fox and her five babies this week, before crews were set to break down the pile with a jackhammer, according to San Diego Humane Society.Humane officers responded and removed the large blocks over the den with the help of construction workers. The days-old babies — two males and three females — made it out safely, but their mother fled over the commotion.Officers tried to lure the mom with fox pup sounds and her babies to no avail. Monday morning, SDHS says they were able to trap the mother. The babies and mom were brought to SDHS's Project Wildlife center for care, before being transported to Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona. 894

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Health experts in San Diego County said Wednesday flu season appears to be at its end, according to the County News Center. The news came after the county released the latest flu numbers. So far this season, 341 people have died from the flu including two new deaths reported over the last week. Those who died ranged in age from one to 101.The high number of deaths this season is a result of an unusually severe flu season, but was also due to better reporting and tracking, County Health and Human Services reported.“It appears that we’re at the end of this flu season,” said Wilma Wooten M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “However, people should continue to take precautions to avoid contracting the virus.”In total, more than 20,000 lab-confirmed flu cases were reported this flu season compared to just over 5,400 the previous year. 880

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Harbor Police were searching for a vandal Monday who set off a panic at an upscale steak house along the Embarcadero.Customers took cover under tables and ran for the exits at Ruth’s Chris Steak House Sunday night when projectiles smashed through at least two of the restaurant’s bay-facing windows. Someone inside the restaurant shouted “gun,” prompting fears of an active shooter, customers told 10News.“It was one of the craziest things I’ve ever been through,” said Joey Giacalone, a long-time patron and former co-owner of the Venetian Restaurant in Point Loma. “I mean everyone is diving under tables. It was pandemonium.”Two bartenders and a manager jumped into action, Giacalone and his wife said, directing guests to take cover and then evacuate the restaurant.RELATED: Hillcrest restaurant reopens after one week after shooting“There were cooks telling us to come to the back door. They sent us through the kitchen. Because again, no one knew what information was really out there. We thought there was an active shooter,” he said. “I kept envisioning a gunman coming around the corner to shoot us all,” Juli Giacalone added. One of the servers working that night survived the Route 91mass shooting in Las Vegas. Ricca Salazar “reacted quickly and ran out the back door with a couple other staff members,” her husband wrote on Facebook. “She fell and they helped her up,” he said. “Scary night, scary scenario.”Harbor Police determined someone had thrown rocks through the windows. Investigators believe the unidentified vandal may have been a disgruntled customer who left the restaurant without paying earlier that evening, said Lt. Victor Banuelos.Joey Giacalone said the man had been acting strangely.“One guest said he saw him going into the women’s bathroom and said, ‘What the hell are you doing?’ And then he left,” he said. The Giacalones commended staff members for going “above-and-beyond” during the incident.“Everyone is panicking and these guys are saying, ‘Forget about me. I have to do my job for this staff and my guests,’” Joey Giacalone said.Afterward, Juli Giacalone said one of the bartenders approached her with a to-go bag in hand.“She’s like, ‘Here’s your food!’ Through the whole ordeal of being rushed out and fleeing -- we thought -- for our lives, she had carried our to-go bag through the whole situation.”Anyone with information on the vandalism should call Port of San Diego Harbor Police at 619-686-6272, Lt. Banuelos said. 2492

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Health experts are weighing in after a local nurse tested positive for COVID-19 more than a week after receiving the Pfizer vaccine. In a Facebook message posted on December 18, Matthew W., an ER nurse at at two different local hospitals, talked about receiving the Pfizer vaccine that day. He told ABC 10News his arm was sore for a day but he suffered no other side effects.Six days later on Christmas Eve -- after working a shift in the COVID-19 unit -- he became sick. He got the chills and later came down with muscle aches and fatigue. The day after Christmas, he went to a drive-up hospital testing site and tested positive for COVID-19."It's not unexpected at all. If you work through the numbers, this is exactly what we’d expect to happen if someone was exposed," said Dr. Christian Ramers, an infectious disease specialist with Family Health Centers of San Diego. He serves on the clinical advisory panel for the county’s vaccine rollout. He points out, it is possible Matthew was infected before receiving the vaccine, as the incubation period may be as much as two weeks. Dr. Ramers says if Matthew did contract it after the vaccine, it’s still in line with what we know."We know from the vaccine clinical trials that it’s going to take about 10 to 14 days for you to start to develop protection from the vaccine," said Dr. Ramers.Dr. Ramers says he knows of several other local cases where health care workers became infected around the time they received the vaccine. He says all the cases illustrate the fact that results aren’t immediate. Even after you start receiving some protection, it won't be full protection."That first dose we think gives you somewhere around 50%, and you need that second dose to get up to 95%," said Dr. Ramers.Dr. Ramers says Matthew’s story also shows that even with vaccines, the pandemic isn’t going to turn around instantly."You hear heath practitioners being very optimistic about it being the beginning of the end, but it’s going to be a slow roll, weeks to months as we roll out the vaccine," said Dr. Ramers. He adds this case is a good reminder of why masks, handwashing, and other COVID protocols are important, even after receiving the vaccine.Matthew says he’s feeling better since his symptoms peaked on Christmas Day but still feels fatigued. 2323

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Gas prices in Southern California could reach .30 per gallon in the next several weeks, according to a GasBuddy. The company’s senior petroleum analyst, Patrick DeHaan, took to Twitter to announce that prices could soar to .15 to .30 per gallon in the next 10 to 14 days. According to DeHaan, the average price per gallon reached .85 in Los Angeles Wednesday afternoon and is expected to “breach in the next few days.”DeHaan tweeted out earlier Wednesday that prices in Southern California could spike by anywhere between 25 and 40 cents per gallon in the coming days. The news comes amid problems at several California refineries and just weeks after attacks on oil fields in Saudi Arabia. Several of the refinery issues include unplanned work at PBF refinery in Torrance, an outage at Chevron’s Segundo refinery, a flaring event at Valero Benicia and Marathon’s LA refinery, DeHaan says.
