As federal government aid begins to wane, hotels across the US says that the majority of jobs in the industry could disappear in the coming months.According to a Hotel & Lodging Association survey, 74% of hotel jobs could be eliminated if additional federal funds are not dispersed to the hospitality industry. Of those surveyed, 69% of operators said that hotel stays have been cut by more than half.The Hotel & Lodging Association says that one in 25 US jobs are supported by the hotel industry, equaling 8 million jobs.According to the federal government, the hospitality industry in total had 16 million employees before the pandemic. In April, that number was cut in half. Federal statistics show about half of the jobs lost in the spring have been regained. But many of those jobs remain in peril.Two-thirds of hotels say that they will go out of business if current revenues remain constant for the next six months."It's time for Congress to put politics aside and prioritize the many businesses and employees in the hardest-hit industries. Hotels are cornerstones of the communities they serve, building strong local economies and supporting millions of jobs," said Chip Rogers, president and CEO of the American Hotel & Lodging Association. "Every member of Congress needs to hear from us about the urgent need for additional support so that we can keep our doors open and bring back our employees."For months, proposed stimulus packages have been stalled as House Democrats, Senate Republicans and the White House have lacked agreement on a set of proposals. While hotels and other businesses in the hospitality industry saw a boost thanks to the CARES Act, those funds are running low.The similarly impacted airline industry has said that thousands of jobs in its industry will be eliminated on October 1 without additional funding. 1863

An Alabama family is mourning a man killed by police Thanksgiving night after being mistaken for the shooter who injured two people at a mall.An officer fatally shot Emantic Fitzgerald Bradford Jr. about 10 p.m. CT Thursday at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover, a Birmingham suburb. At the time, authorities said he got into an altercation at the mall and opened fire, injuring two people ages 18 and 12.An officer encountered an armed Bradford fleeing the scene and fatally shot him, police said.But after conducting forensic tests and talking to witnesses, investigators said Bradford might have been involved in the altercation but likely did not fire the rounds that injured the two youths.The gunman is still at large and police have not provided a name or description.Relatives are demanding answers as they mourn a man they call EJ."EJ was a devoted son and brother, who dedicated his life to serving his country and always doing the right thing," his family said in a statement."As we continue to grieve, rest assured that we are working diligently with our legal team to determine exactly what happened and why this police officer killed our son. We will never forget EJ, and ask for your continued prayers during this incredibly difficult time.""They killed him for no reason at all. He wasn't the shooter," his aunt, Catherine Jewell, told reporters. "He was a great guy. He was very respectable ... They did him wrong."Bradford's Facebook page says he was a US Army engineer. Anyone scared of snakes on the ground may not want to read this story — because the reptiles are also in the sky.The paradise snake, which is native to south and southeast Asia, has been known to scientists for some time. But they never really understood how the species — and others like it — are able to glide through the air.Researchers at Virginia Tech conducted controlled tests with the snakes in an indoor environment. They discovered that the undulating motion the snakes exhibit while gliding stabilizes them, which allows them to fly further. Previously, researchers thought the snakes' movements in the air were the same movement they used when slithering on the ground.Now, researchers say they want to learn how the snakes generate lift and how they can turn in the air.Luckily, while the paradise snake is poisonous, its venom is weak compared to other species. Like almost all snakes, the paradise snake is considered harmless to humans. 960

An Arizona Uber driver says a local school administrator tried to turn his ride-share van into a school bus.The man, who was granted anonymity for this story, said on Wednesday he showed up at the Arizona Academy of Science and Technology and was surprised to see six school children who appeared to be under the age of eight getting into his Uber.  In a video recorded inside his vehicle, a frustrated exchange takes place between the driver and a woman who identified herself as an acting principal. The woman told the Uber driver the person who requested the ride was the assistant principal since the principal was out of town.After the children loaded up into the van, the driver asked the woman if she was going with them. When she said no, he told her he cannot transport the children without an adult riding with them. The woman asked him why, and he told her it was against Uber's company policy.In the video exchange you hear the woman say:"Every Uber we've had has a different story. Why?" the woman asks the driver in the video. The driver responded by saying that other drivers must not have been aware of the policy.Despite repeated calls, Arizona Academy of Science and Technology did not respond for a request for comment.On its website, school officials state that while they do not provide transportation for students, they are happy to work with families by linking them together and promote car-pooling.The Uber driver said he was bringing this story to light because he felt school administrators were putting the children at risk."It's one thing to carpool with another family or an adult but another thing entirely to put small children in a strangers car you know," said the driver.A spokesman for Uber says under their community guidelines, children must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times.
