SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It's lasagna-making time in the Rosenblatt home and mom Angela and her adorable 5-year-old helper, daughter Stella, are whipping up a big batch for strangers in need.Angela says, "I think it's a very different message that we send when we put our heart, we put our soul, we put our time into providing a home-cooked meal for someone."Angela is part of the organization Lasagna Love, founded by Rhiannon Menn who first posted her idea on social media in May. Angela was one of the first ten to answer the call to spread love through cooking."It inspires a little bit of hope. It confirms hope giving it forward that somebody cared enough about you," says Angela.Angela makes about twenty lasagnas a week in her Del Cerro kitchen, which means she has given more than 500 so far. She says she started learning how to whip up great food when she was young. "Growing up in the restaurant industry you cook with what you've got," says Angela, "it's always made with love. It's always made with some really great ingredients, but it's what I can get so I can feed as many people as I can."Volunteers drop the meals off at people's doors for pandemic safety and recipients often make it clear just how thankful they are. That includes essential worker Abigail Eastman who says, "I'm very grateful to you guys in this time of pandemic. You guys are making a difference one lasagna at a time."Sometimes, there is no feedback. Angela says she understands why."It's embarrassing to a lot of people, that this is the first time they have never been able to maybe provide for their family, and you can't be doing this for a thank you."Certainly for Angela and the now 3,000-plus volunteers in 47 states feeding their communities, the true motivation is feeding the soul."I hope that is a lesson that I'm able to show to my daughter, that even though we're having a hard time we can continue to move through it and we can continue to show grace," says Angela.Angela doesn't always make lasagna. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In a downtown courtroom on Friday afternoon, attorneys battled over a request to halt the shutdown orders for San Diego bars, restaurants, and gyms.Attorney Bruno Katz is representing a group of local businesses like Cowboy Star restaurant and Bear Republic Crossfit gym, which are seeking an emergency injunction. He told the judge, “What I do want to say, your Honor, is that the temporary restraining order is based on data. It’s based on facts. It’s based on science and it's based on the state not showing why it has targeted these industries when the science and data doesn't support it.”The state argued that the damage to businesses pales in comparison to the damage on human life. “There's nearly a thousand dead San Diegans and the numbers are getting dramatically worse and have been for the last couple of weeks,” said state Deputy Attorney General Jonathan Eisenberg.Restaurants and gyms were open for indoor operations with limited capacities under the red tier. However, last Saturday’s move to the purple tier forced them to shutdown indoor services completely and move outside. They're suing Governor Newsom and San Diego County, arguing that the closures go against their rights and are causing financial devastation.The suit was filed on behalf of all restaurants and gyms.Local owner of The Studio SD fitness studio Rachel Racz spoke to ABC10 News before Friday’s hearing. She told ABC10 News in part, “It's been rough to shut down business again when people were feeling normal and then we see the County of San Diego's Department of Health say that gyms are only point .4% of cases in San Diego and it's really frustrating as a business owner where we have these ebbs and flows- where we can be open and then we can’t.”Superior Court Judge Kenneth J. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Millions of Americans owe more on their homes than they’re actually worth in the first quarter of 2019, according to a new report by Attom Data Solutions. San Diegans, on the other hand, are sitting on equity rich properties. In the U.S. as a whole, more than five million homes were seriously underwater, meaning property owners owe at least 25 percent more than the home is worth. According to the report, nearly 40 percent of properties in San Diego are equity rich, meaning property owners had at least 50 percent equity. In California, 43 percent of properties are equity rich. Other states that fared well include Hawaii, New York, Washington and Vermont. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Jessica Reilly, a Navy Air Traffic Controller currently based out of San Diego, has a high-stress job, but turns to her artistic side as an outlet. She combines her passion for the Navy with creating comics, adding a little bit of Dungeons and Dragons (which she learned from her husband) to create Gobbo the Goblin, a Navy sailor.“I have managed to breed a comic series for the Navy that is also targeted toward Dungeons and Dragons players,” she said, laughing.She said she’s loved art since she was a child, and started drawing her first comics on whiteboards while aboard Navy ships. It’s grown from there. She has a cartoon version of herself that goes on adventures with Gobbo. She said her real-life experiences combined with stories from other sailors motivate the storylines, frequently making fun of the daily woes of Navy life.“There is an outlet and a want for people to see comics kind of tongue and cheek of their own culture,” she said.She said this comedic relief is a good mental break from a tense job.“My job, even though it’s stressful, especially as an Air Traffic Controller, I can take a break, and I can remind everybody else that it’s not so stressful,” she said.Her art has turned into a family business. Her husband, who is a Navy veteran and currently in the Army reserves, writes comic books and she illustrates them. She said the first time they teamed up, they brought the comic books to a show and they sold out on the spot. Their company, Five Realms, was supposed to have a table at Comic-Con, which was canceled this year. To win a spot at the show, they had to submit their comic book, which was reviewed by judges. “It’s a huge accomplishment for me and my husband and unfortunately it didn’t happen,” she said, adding that they hope to be there next year.Jessica’s work has been noticed by the Navy. She’s been selected to do an Instagram takeover of the Navy’s “At the Helm” page during the week of October 25.
