SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This week, San Diegans will get the chance to learn about our armed services with several exhibits and tours as part of Fleet Week.Fleet Week runs Nov. 4-12 with festivities throughout San Diego, giving families the chance to get close up with America's military forces. Last year, more than 20,000 visitors took part in the festivities, learning about filed combat gear, touring the USS Harpers Ferry, and exploring the event's popular Innovation Zone.New this year, families can enjoy a Veterans Day parade and special veterans art exhibit, with works created by active duty, reservists, and veterans covering an array of mediums."San Diego is definitely a military town," Gordon Rutherford, Fleet Week San Diego president, said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The woman accused of killing another driver in a wrong-way crash while drunk on a San Diego freeway last year changed her plea Friday.Lauren Ashley Freeman pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury in the Feb. 26, 2018 collision that killed 35-year-old Justin Callahan.Freeman's plea dismisses a murder charge. She is scheduled to be sentenced to 11 years and 8 months in prison at a September hearing.RELATED: CHP reverses blame in fatal wrong-way crash on I-5 rampInitially, Callahan was deemed responsible for the crash. The position of his Volkswagen Jetta after the crash led CHP officers to believe he was at fault. But California Highway Patrol investigators reversed their findings after Callahan's family refuted the claim and the case was re-opened. Freeman was charged with causing the fatal crash in November.Callahan was driving to his Ocean Beach home from work in Chula Vista when the crash occurred on a transition ramp from northbound Interstate 5 and westbound I-8 just before 2 a.m.The 35-year-old died at the scene, while Freeman and a passenger in her Toyota Camry sustained major injuries. Investigators said Freeman had a blood alcohol content of .28 at the time of the crash. 1272

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There is new frustration for San Diegans trying to cutback their spending amid coronavirus restrictions.Some companies are refusing to freeze automatic renewals despite being closed. That's leading to resentment as workers across the county face layoffs, furloughs and reduced hours. Amanda Sullivan, a mental health professional, says she's still being billed a month for her 24 Hour Fitness membership, despite the gym shuttered. 24 Hour Fitness promises instead to add the lost time to the end of her membership. "It feels like robbery," she said. "We're taking your money, you can't do anything about it, we're telling you this is what we're offering, we'll just tack on time at the end."Sullivan said her emails to 24 Hour Fitness have gone largely ignored, or she's received boilerplate responses. Meanwhile, 24 Hour Fitness has shuttered its call center. In a statement, the gym stood by its decision, noting it also made available its subscription app that includes exercise instruction."24 Hour Fitness is focused on the continued health and safety of our club members, team members and guests. With that in mind, we have made some difficult decisions to ensure our ability to provide services to our club members and sustain our business over the long term," the statement said.The coronavirus shutdowns have prompted a variety of responses from membership-based businesses.While 24 hour is billing as normal, other gyms, like CorePower, OrangeTheory and Chuze have frozen fees. LA Fitness will only keep billing if a club reopens in the San Diego market by April 1.The San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld say they will extend annual passes to make up for the lost time. Spokespeople for both parks say additional questions should be directed to customer service. Consumer attorney Frederick Schenk, of CaseyGerry, says each subscription contract is different but he says it's always worth a phone call to ask for a refund. "I'm finding that vendors are working with their customers to come to terms with this horrible dilemma," Schenk said. "We're all facing it, and we have to face it together. So if a vendor thinks that it's going to take advantage of its members it will find in the not-too-distant future it will have lost that member and many others."Michael Weiner, a consumer attorney with Slate Law Group, said it is difficult to analyze situations without seeing individual contracts, but in general a consumer would appear to be on strong legal footing if he or she is being billed for something they aren't getting. Weiner suggested reaching out to corporate, and posting on social media if things don't change. "If they were still rebuffed, there are multiple avenues to take, from hiring counsel to speak to the company on their behalf, to filing a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the local San Diego Chamber of Commerce," Weiner said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Poway man at the center of a multimillion-dollar Ponzi scheme was sentenced Wednesday to 12 years in prison. Numerous victims spoke to Dougherty via video conferencing due to COVID-19 protocols.In a plea deal, Christopher Dougherty pleaded guilty to grand theft and securities fraud back in March. He also received a white-collar crime enhancement, according to the District Attorney’s office. Prosecutors say there were nearly 50 victims, many who were elderly.He originally faced more than 80 felony counts after his arrest in April 2019.Team 10 first spoke to several alleged victims of Dougherty early last year. They said he stole the money he was supposed to invest for them. Some of his victims met Dougherty through their jobs as educators while he worked as an investment advisor with various school districts.“The lessons we learned from you were beyond the academic acumen. They are about the dark side of life,” said victim Cheryl Biagi during victim impact statements Wednesday afternoon.Biagi said Dougherty not only took money from her, but also her niece and her 91-year-old mother who has since passed away.“We know you are guilty of so much more than securities fraud and grand theft, but we hope when you get out of prison, you make every effort to repay every dime to those people who believed in you,” Biagi said.Investigators said Dougherty offered victims investment opportunities in companies he owned, then used some of their funds for his personal expenses like home remodeling, travel, and college tuition.For the first time, Dougherty spoke about his crimes. He offered an apology that lasted roughly 17 seconds.“To everyone, I accept full responsibility for my actions. I want to sincerely apologize to you and your family members and I also want to let you know I did make a mistake and I will not do this in the future. I extremely apologize,” Dougherty said in court.It is an apology that falls short for many victims. Jerry and Diane Cole told Team 10 they lost more than .6 million in the scheme.“This wasn’t money that basically fell out of the sky to us. This was the product of 50 years of our married life together… of working, saving, putting away money,” Cole said.Cole said they have been able to survive, thanks to their children and close friends. They believe Dougherty has no remorse for his crimes.Although Dougherty is ordered to pay restitution, many victims are doubtful they will see their money again.Deputy District Attorney Michael Zachry called this case “extremely egregious.” Zachry said there was over million dollars taken in with million net loss to victims.“It’s more than just money. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Food Bank on Thursday selected 35 nonprofit organizations around the county with the goal of giving them the food and supplies they need to continue helping families in their area.La Maestra Community Health Center provides health and support services to families from the South Bay to East County. Many of those they serve come from low-income households.Before the COVID-19 pandemic, they helped about 300 families a week. Since then, that number has doubled, and they’re now feeding close to 600 families a week.At a news conference with mayors from San Diego, Chula Vista, and Escondido, the San Diego Food Bank announced the kickoff of their “Super Pantries” program, where they have partnered with 35 pre-selected organizations.Instead of holding the mass distribution food events that they’ve done in the past, the Food Bank will now focus on providing these organizations with food and supplies.San Diego Food Bank President/CEO James Floros said, “Now with the grass roots approach, they can go into their communities and get what they need.”Each organization will also get a check for ,000.
