(KGTV) - Craft beer is as much a part of San Diego as apple pie is a part of America.Bold statement? Sure. But there's no denying the impact the local industry has had on the region over the past decade.RELATED: San Diego getting an official craft beer known as '72 and Hoppy'At Stone Brewery, the craft of beer is taken seriously - much like at many other local breweries that now pepper San Diego County.Padraic "Paddy" Lenehan, Stone Brewing's global beer curator, walked 10News through the different tastes that San Diegans crave when it comes to craft beers.Beer 101Lenehan walked us through a few of Stone's popular beers offered throughout the year and seasonally: Stone Ripper San Diego-style Pale Ale, Stone Vengeful Spirit IPA, Miguel Ceja Andrade/Brandon Berube Stone Merc Machine Double IPA, and Stone Xocoveza Mocha Stout.Pale AlePale Ales are considered a good balance of both malt and hops and can range to include fruity notes or varying degrees of floral tastes. American versions tend to be hoppier, while British version tend to be maltier.IPA (India Pale Ale)An Indian Pale Ale is generally a herbal, citric beer with a hoppy bitterness. These beers can range in color from golden brown to a reddish amber and can also range in flavors to include fruity notes or more floral hints.Double IPAThe Double IPA is often referred to as an American IPA on steroids. Those tastes of an IPA are amplified and stronger than their single IPA relatives. The style, credited as West Coast-style IPAs, are generally very hoppy to the taste.StoutAmerican stouts are inspired by traditional English-style stouts, with a balanced and generally heavy taste. Many U.S. brewers commonly add coffee and chocolate to compliment the roasted malt flavors and the trend of aging stouts in bourbon or whiskey barrels has also taken off.For more about your favorite styles, beer website Beer Advocate has a lengthy list of styles and what makes them each unique. At Stone in Escondido...Stone Brewery has developed a reputation as one of the area's top breweries. Its Escondido brewery and bistro is evidence of that - sporting rotating taps of the brewery's latest creations and favorite brews.RELATED: 10 days of events on tap for San Diego Beer WeekThe brewery has taken those beers and crafted up a menu to compete with taste buds, with options available for the entire family. As always, a designated driver or ride sharing is encouraged when visiting the brewery. (CNN) -- Lifeguards in Huntington Beach, California, were reminding swimmers to shuffle their feet when they go into the ocean after 176 people were stung by stingrays in just one day.A record number of people were stung on Saturday, authorities told CNN affiliate KTLA.It may sound like a scene from a monster movie, but the rays weren't on a stabby rampage attacking beachgoers' lower legs.Warm weather brought lots of people to the beach during low tide."When you have people in the water with lower tides like that, they make their way out to where the stingrays reside and, unfortunately, people step on the stingrays and that's when they get stung," Lt. Eric Dieterman of the fire department's Marine Safety Division told KTLA.Lifeguards had people soak their injuries in bags of warm water to help ease the pain from the stings. There were fewer people in the water on Sunday after the weather got cooler, KTLA reported, and the number of stings went down.Dieterman said lifeguards warned people to stay out of the water through Monday.Stingrays are flat, bottom-dwellers that like to hang out partially covered in the sand in shallow, temperate waters.Their primary defense is camouflage, but they will sting if stepped on or disturbed. That's why experts recommend swimmers shuffle their feet when they walk in the water to produce vibrations that scare the rays away.Stingray injuries can usually be treated with warm water, antibiotics to prevent infections and possibly a tetanus shot, according to SeaGrant California. In rare cases, a doctor may have to remove a stinger if it breaks off in the wound.Legendary television star and conservationist Steve Irwin died in 2006 when a stingray barb went into his chest while he was filming a documentary in Australia.Huntington Beach resident Lee Perkins told KTLA that he was stung two weeks ago and that the wound got infected."It's definitely a searing nerve pain and it's pretty intense," Perkins said.Perkins said he's grateful that his 10-year-old son, who was swimming nearby, wasn't stung. 2062
(KGTV) — California has released guidance on allowing outdoor services, like religious services and protests, amid the coronavirus pandemic.Initially, the state released guidance for indoor religious services to be held at 25% capacity or 100 people, whichever is less. San Diego Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said Monday that the guidance has been expanded to not only outdoor religious services, but cultural services, constitutionally-protected activities, and weddings provided physical distancing is practiced."That remains in place for indoor services, but they have expanded that outdoor services can occur provided that they can maintain physical distance between individuals. So they're allowing whatever the natural surroundings allow for provided that you can physically distance between individuals. You can do outdoor services without a limitation on the number of people," Fletcher said.In San Diego County, a facial covering requirement for people within six feet of non-household members is also still in effect.Guidance on religious and cultural services, and other open services in San Diego County can be found online here. 1147
