After Hurricane Laura hammered parts of the Gulf Coast, communities are coming together with people helping people.“The battle cry is out there,” said Curtis Drafton, who is gearing up for a private rescue mission. “The bell is tolling. Let’s go get it!”This United States Army veteran, who spent his life helping others, is now spending his own money to do the same as a civilian.“Last year we spent around ,533,” he said.Drafton is leading the Veteran Emergency Response Unit, a nonprofit providing relief during natural disasters.“It’s not really about the money,” he said. “It’s like, Americans are suffering, Americans are dying and at the end of the day, somebody has got to pick up the slack.”About an hour outside of Baton Rouge in Gator Country, neighbors gathered to help remove a fallen tree off Paige Fontenote’s brand new outdoor carport that was crushed during the storm.“It touches my heart; it makes me want to cry,” she said.Overcome with emotions, Fontone almost broke down from the support from people in the area where she wants to retire.“This is what it’s all about,” she said. “This is why we want to move here.”In Lafayette, Louisiana, homeowners took matters into their own hands, chopping down a fallen tree between a home and an apartment complex.“You cook a gumbo, you hope nothing doesn’t happen to your house and then you get out and help your friends,” said one local man.Helping friends in this time of need as people continue to help other people.“If 2020 hasn’t taught us anything that would be it,” the man said. “Turn the TV off, spend time with your neighbors and do it for them.” 1628

After a group of demonstrators posted Fox News Host Tucker Carlson's home address on Twitter, the network stopped tweeting. It is seen as a silent protest from the network, according to Politico. The account has 18.3 million followers, which gives it a huge audience reach.Fox News hasn't officially said why it stopped tweeting. There have been no tweets from the largely followed account since Nov. 8.Politico reports 1.4 percent of FoxNews.com traffic in October came from Twitter, including all of the network's official accounts. That information comes from a tracker called SimilarWeb.Data shows nearly 70 percent of FoxNews.com traffic is from direct clicks on the website. Twitter may not be providing enough meaningful impact to the network's digital business, experts say. 809

A woman in Texas was sentenced Wednesday to a five-year prison term for voting illegally in the 2016 presidential election while on supervised release for a tax fraud conviction. When she voted in the 2016 election, Crystal Mason had already served almost three years in prison for her fraud conviction but had not yet completed her sentence and was still serving a three-year supervised release period, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.Convicted felons lose their voting rights in Texas until they complete their full sentences, including parole and probation.Mason reportedly told the court, however, that she was not aware of that prohibition and had not been informed that she was ineligible to vote until her sentence was complete."She voted in good faith," Mason's defense attorney J. Warren St. John said in an interview. "I don't think she should be going to prison for that." Her attorney has already filed an appeal. "I think Texas law is extreme in terms of sentencing people to prison for voting violations," he said.Mason signed an affidavit in order to cast a provisional ballot, which stated that it is a violation of the law to vote if you are a convicted felon, but Mason did not see that part of the ballot, St. John said."Ms. Mason was never asked if she was a convicted felon by the election judge nor did she indicate that she was a convicted felon," her attorney said. "Ms. Mason voted in good faith that she could legally vote because she was never notified by any government agency that it was against the law to vote."Prosecutors argued that Mason either intended to vote illegally or should have been aware that she was not eligible to vote, according to The Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Matt Smid, a prosecutor with the Tarrant County District Attorney's Office, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Star-Telegram reported at the time of her indictment that Mason believed she was being targeted for her vote -- which she said she cast for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.During the 2016 campaign, Donald Trump regularly said that the election was "rigged" against him, and after he won the presidential election, he claimed without evidence that massive voter fraud had cost him the popular vote. 2260

Although Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden slightly leads President Donald Trump in Nevada, the state did not declare a winner on Election Day.According to the Nevada Department of Elections, they would not be releasing any new vote totals until 9 a.m. Thursday.Officials said they have already counted all mail-in ballots through Nov. 2 and all early in-person votes and Election Day votes. But in a tweet early Wednesday morning, the department explained that they still had more ballots to count before they could declare a winner in their state. They also have not counted any mail-in votes that were received on Election Day. They still have to count mail-in ballots that will be received over the next week, as well as provisional ballots."Ballots outstanding is difficult to estimate in Nevada because every voter was sent a mail ballot," officials said in the tweet. As of 9:30 a.m. CT Wednesday, Biden has 588,252 votes, and Trump has 580,605, according to the AP.According to the Associated Press, no Republican presidential candidate has carried Nevada since 2004. 1089

After President Donald Trump blasted violence that has transpired at Black Lives Matter protests, claiming that Democrats are encouraging riots, Trump was asked to address a violent encounter involving a supporter of his last week.Kyle Rittenhouse, 17, was charged on Wednesday for the deaths of two demonstrators in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and for wounding a third protester. It has since been determined through social media that Rittenhouse is a supporter of Trump.During his Monday news conference, Trump said about the incident in Kenosha, "That was an interesting situation. He was trying to get away from them, I guess… and he fell & then they very violently attacked him.Trump added, “He probably would've been killed."Trump’s statement was in line with claims made by Rittenhouse’s attorney, who said that the shootings were in self-defense.Rittenhouse "has suddenly found himself at the center of a national firestorm and charged with murder after defending himself from a relentless, vicious and potentially deadly mob attack in Kenosha, Wisconsin,” attorney John Pierce of Pierce Bainbridge said in a statement last week. The exact circumstances that led to last week’s shooting are unclear, but several videos posted on social media have given investigators some insight. One of the videos appeared to show Rittenhouse scuffling with demonstrators before firing several shots. He is then seen walking away from the incident with the gun dangling from his chest while holding his hands up.While officers initially did not confront Rittenhouse at the scene late Tuesday, he was arrested the next day.Trump is scheduled to visit Kenosha on Tuesday, the site of ongoing unrest following the shooting of Jacob Blake. Blake was shot seven times in the back by Officer Rusten Sheskey. Per department policy, Sheskey is on paid administrative leave.Protesters supporting the Black Lives Matter movement have called on both Sheskey’s firing and arrest for the shooting.White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany told reporters earlier on Monday that Trump will visit businesses damaged amid the unrest.Earlier in the day, McEnany said Trump is "not going to wade into that"in addressing the Rittenhouse incident. 2225
