SAN DIEGO( KGTV) - A Navy veteran has earned a spot with Federal Fire San Diego, getting hired the day she graduated from the fire academy.More competitive, Federal Fire is the civilian department which oversees San Diego naval bases.After serving her country, rookie Caitlyn Argeris says she wanted to serve her community.“She was hungry for it, we saw the fire get lit, and we wanted to nurture that," said Chief Mary Anderson.While still on active duty, the young mother took EMT classes at night“I wasn’t sure if I’d be strong enough, fast enough, have the mental aptitude or physical capabilities," said Argeris. "But you push through it and keep going."Chief Anderson says Argeris is the second Navy veteran they've hired on the spot after graduation.Anderson is on a mission to recruit more women into her department. They're at 2 percent, compared to the national average of about 5 percent.“Women bring something unique to the fire service: compassion," said Chief Anderson. "Once they realize they can do it, they catch that bug as well.”Argeris hopes her story will inspire other women to consider joining the fire service. 1142

The San Diego Air & Space Museum celebrated their accomplishments with a special event held during their after hours on Saturday. The public was invited to explore the exhibits, hear from a specially organized panel and watched the launch the San Diego premier of “The Day We Walked on the Moon,” a special documentary from the Smithsonian Channel commemorating the Apollo 11 Moon landing.At the event, people were reminiscing on where they were during the historic moment 50 years ago. SAN DIEGO - San Diego photographers are taking advantage of the serene and luminous glow of the surf this week.Eerie neon blue waves have been seen against San Diego's shore this week, creating some rare photo opportunities. The phenomenon is created when a red tide, which is algae bloom filled with phytoplankton called "dinoflagellates," rolls off waves onto or near the shoreline.The organisms react with a bioluminescent chemical reaction when jostled as a way to warn predators, to lure prey, or communicate within their species. The blue glow can be created by a simple step in the water or crash of a wave.IN SAN DIEGO...The current red tide is being caused by massive numbers of dinoflagellates including "Ceratium falcatiforme" and "Lingulodinium polyedra," according to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego.The Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is not affiliated with The E.W. Scripps Co., the parent company of this station. Researchers do not know how long this current red tide will last or "the full spatial range of the bloom." In the past, blooms have lasted anywhere from a week to a month or more.San Diego's last red tide event in September 2013 lasted one week, while the previous one in October 2011 lasted a month, according to researchers. Previous ones have lasted even longer.Monday's event was captured from La Jolla to Encinitas. Scripps recommends viewing the marine event from a dark beach at least two hours after sunset, though visibility is not guaranteed.IS IT HARMFUL?...In some areas, a red tide can be toxic to local marine life. In California, the majority are not caused by species that produce toxins, such as domoic acid, according to researchers. However, it's still best to be cautious around the bloom.The Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System at Scripps samples the water for potential harmful algal toxins weekly.Red tides are unpredictable events and do not always give off bioluminescence, Scripps said.BUT WHY IS IT RED?...The red coloration is due to the high number of organisms in the water. During the day, organisms will swim to the surface to soak in sunlight. Each cell contains a little sunscreen that gives off the color, according to Scripps.When these organisms gather at the surface for sunlight, they can create an especially intense red.Researchers say a combination of physical, chemical, and biological factors are the driving forces behind allowing red tides to form. 2586

Many business owners in the area say the memories of damage when peaceful protests escalated at the end of May are still fresh, so they boarded up windows as a precautionary step, hoping it turns out to not be needed.Related: Looters smash windows, rob stores in downtown San DiegoAldo Broussard owns Carter’s Diamonds, a jewelry store in a jewelry exchange building that houses dozens of jewelry shops and professionals. He said they boarded up the windows at their business in May and during that time saw damage to surrounding buildings, so they boarded up windows again ahead of the election. He said they took that step to protect the small-business owners inside the facility.“There’s a lot of jewelers in here who have basically all their life savings, all their work, all their tools and without it they can’t make a living so it’s more for protection for everybody in the building,” said Broussard.Broussard added that he doesn’t expect protests to cause damage, but would rather be safe than sorry.“I think overall people are good so I think it’s going to be okay. There might be a few who take advantage of the situation but I think overall it’s going to be fine,” he said.Nearby, Sushi 2 restaurant is another small business bracing for protests or unrest this week. Kuniko Holmes is the owner and said she boarded up her windows in June after receiving some damage during downtown protests. She ended up leaving the boards up through the summer because of uncertainty of the future and also because she knew November could be a stressful month when she would have to board up again.“I wanted to make sure so I don’t have to put it up and down and up and down because it’s work for people and also it costs. As a small business like we are, even putting the board up made it expensive,” she said.Indoor dining was also not allowed during that time, so she ultimately decided that if the boards would be staying up through most of the year, she would make them visually appealing.“We decided to ask local artists to put some great art as you see and it changes the dynamic of how it looks and it just looks so inviting,” she said, referencing the peace signs and hearts painted on the boards.Other downtown businesses that boarded up windows ahead of the election include Ralphs, CVS, 7-eleven and the Church of Scientology.San Diego County law enforcement agencies said they are not aware of any planned protests or possible unrest, but have extra staffing just in case. 2614
