VIENTIANE, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived here on Saturday evening, starting his working visit to Laos.     Wen is also scheduled to attend the 3rd Summit of the Great Mekong Subregion countries -- China, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar -- to be convened in this Laos capital city on Monday.     According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wen, invited by Lao Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh, will meet with Lao President Choummaly Saygnasone and hold talks with his Lao counterpart Bouasone on future bilateral cooperation.     Wen and Bouasone are scheduled to attend the signing ceremony of cooperation agreement in the sectors of economy, technology, coal and e-governance. Wen started his working visit to Laos on Saturday evening by the invitation of Lao Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh, and he is also scheduled to attend the 3rd Summit of the Great Mekong Subregion countries in Vientiane    After his working visit to Laos, Wen will join with leaders from the other five GMS members as well as representatives from the Asian Development Bank at the summit and attend the opening ceremony of a 1,800-km international road from China's Kunming city to Thailand's Bangkok.     The GMS, established in 1992, promotes economic and social development, irrigation and cooperation within the six Mekong countries.     About 320 million people live within the GMS region, and their common link, the Mekong River, winds its way for 4,200 km. The great majority of these people live in rural areas where they lead subsistence or semi-subsistence agricultural lifestyles.     The area boasts abundant natural resources and huge development potential. With a long history of cultural and economic exchanges among the nations, the area has formed peculiar cultural and economic characteristics based on different folk customs and natural landscapes of the six nations sharing the river.     The first GMS Summit was held in Cambodia's Phnom Penh in 2002,and the second in southwest China's Kunming in 2005.

Top leaders Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin and others were also present.     The death toll of the 8.0-magnitude Wenchuan earthquake reached nearly 70,000, and more than 18,000 were reported missing Monday. Government relief fund totaled 54.72 billion yuan (about 7.82 billion U.S. dollars), while domestic and foreign donations hit 55.3 billion yuan in cash and goods.     Hu told the meeting that education and supervision of Party members and leading officials in regard to clean governance should be strengthened, the system of punishing and preventing corruption further be improved, and efforts in the anti-corruption drive be increased. Top leaders Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin and others were also presentHu called on all the CPC members to study and practise the great "earthquake rescue and relief spirit" displayed by the local Communist heroes, which he summarized as "all people of one mind", "unity in strength", "fearlessness of hardship", "people first", and "respect for science".     "The spirit was a concentrated display and new development of the national spirit of modern China," he said.     Hu attributed the major achievement of saving lives in the first stage of the earthquake relief campaign to the firm leadership of the Party, stressing that Party organizations at all levels and members played a vital role.     The earthquake relief campaign was a test of the leadership and capabilities of the Party as well as a test for the capabilities of Party organizations and the nature of all Party members, he said.     Now, he said, was the crucial period for achieving the goal of the country's economic and social development as the earthquake relief effort entered into the stage of settling the affected people by restoring normal life and rebuilding homes.     Hu urged the whole Party to display excellence in the earthquake relief, in order to maintain the Party's flesh-and-blood link with the people.     He urged Party organizations of all levels to increase their capabilities for handling emergencies, by establishing and perfecting the working mechanism with concentrated leadership, unified command, sensitivity in response, and high efficiency.

BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao celebrated the successful return of Chinese taikonauts who had completed the country's third manned space mission on Sunday.     Together with other senior officials and officers at the Beijing Aerospace Control Center (BACC), Wen watched the re-entry of Shenzhou-7 space module to Earth in a live transmission. China's Shenzhou-7 spacecraft's re-entry module lands safely in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.After the module landed in China's northern grassland and the three taikonauts Zhai Zhigang, Liu Boming, and Jing Haipeng moved out of the spaceship by themselves, Wen congratulated the victory with the technical staff members and operators in the center.     Delivering a congratulatory note from the central authorities, Wen said the mission was "a victory of the Chinese space and technological field and a monumental achievement in the socialist causes". One of the three Chinese taikonauts (R) is ready to get out of Shenzhou-7 re-entry module after their safe landing in North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on Sept. 28, 2008The taikonauts were lifted into space at 9:10 p.m. Thursday at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, where the country's first twomanned space missions took off in 2003 and 2005.     The three taikonauts came back from a 68-hour flight, included a historic 20-minute spacewalk of Zhai Zhigang on Saturday.
