Passengers might be allowed to keep liquids and laptops in their carry-on bags at airport security checkpoints in the United States if screening technology being tested at select airports is widely adopted. The Transportation Security Administration announced plans Monday to test computed tomography (CT) scanners for carry-on bags, with up to 40 units expected to be in place at US airports by the end of 2018.The X-ray scanning equipment creates 3D images that can be analyzed on three axes for explosives and other threats. The CT technology is similar to that used for medical imaging. Current screening machines for carry-on bags generate 2D images."Use of CT technology substantially improves TSA's threat detection capability at the checkpoint," said TSA Administrator David Pekoske in a statement.CT technology testing started in 2017 at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Boston's Logan International Airport. John F. Kennedy International Airport has also received a scanner.London's Heathrow is among international airports testing the 3D technology. An initial 15 units will be deployed within the next few months at the following US airports:Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI)Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD)Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG)Houston Hobby Airport (HOU)Indianapolis International Airport (IND)John F. Police say a man in Australia fought off a deadly snake that was in his vehicle while he drove on a highway. In a press release, police in Queensland, Australia said a 27-year-old Gladstone man identified as "Jimmy" was driving down Dawson Highway back in June at 100 kilometers (62 miles) per hour when he noticed a highly venomous eastern brown snake, which is one of the world's deadliest snakes, near his legs. The incident happened near the town of Calliope.“I’m driving along at 100, and I just started to brake,” Jimmy said in the news release. “…And the more I moved my legs… it just started to wrap around me. Its head just started striking at the (driver’s seat) chair, between my legs.”Jimmy said in the news release that he fought the snake off with his seatbelt and a knife while attempting to stop his car.Police were able to capture the moment on body cameras, which they posted to their Facebook page. 923

People who aren’t rich or famous typically don’t have prenuptial agreements, which are legal documents detailing who gets what in a divorce. Even ordinary folks without prenups, though, should think about how to protect their money if something goes wrong.Planning for divorce may be cynical, but it’s also smart, San Diego certified financial planner Ginita Wall says.“It’s cynical to put on a seat belt when you pull out of your garage, because you’re planning for an accident,” says Wall, who is also a certified public accountant and the author of several books including “The ABCs of Divorce for Women.” “You want to be safe if that happens, God forbid.”Marital breakups aren’t the only concern. Creditors can come after joint accounts and property if a spouse has unpaid debts or gets sued, says Carl Soranno, a family law attorney in Roseland, New Jersey.“Even if your marriage is strong, or you think it’s strong, there are events that can put pressure on it,” Soranno says.Estate planning also can be easier when at least some assets are kept as separate property. You might trust your spouse to do right by the kids after you’re gone, for example, but can you trust your spouse’s next spouse? Separate property can allow you to better control who inherits after your death.“Separate property,” by the way, is the legal term for assets such as cash, investments and real estate that you owned before you married. It also applies to any gifts or inheritances you receive during marriage. But there are plenty of ways separate property can become marital property if you’re not careful. Depositing an inheritance into a joint account can do it. So can using money from a joint account to pay taxes on separately owned investments or property. State laws vary enormously, so it can be worth consulting an experienced attorney or financial planner to find out the rules that apply in yours, says CFP Shelly-Ann Eweka, a wealth management director with TIAA in Denver.“You want someone familiar with your state laws and your situation to give you advice,” Eweka says. Here are some moves that typically help to protect what you own:Have ‘mine’ and ‘ours’ accounts 2178

Philadelphia is the most populous city in a battleground state, and there is a lot of attention being paid to its polling locations Tuesday. Of the 25 complaints of potential polling place or Election Day concerns the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office received by noon ET on Tuesday, 21 were already resolved. In a press release, they said the vast majority of complaints were about alleged interference, like a polling place being partially blocked by construction or members of the press. The Philadelphia District Attorney responded on social media to a concern shared by Trump’s Election Day operations director.“Members of our Election Task Force have investigated this allegation. This polling place is located in an interior room and the sign in question is further than 10 feet from it. This tweet is deliberately deceptive,” the district attorney’s official Twitter account stated. 902

PARADISE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A woman who owns property near the location where a deadly wildfire started in Northern California says she got an email from utility Pacific Gas & Electric Co. last week. It said crews needed to come on her property because their transmission system was causing sparks. It's still not clear what caused the massive fire that has killed 29 people. PG&E said Thursday it experienced a problem on an electrical transmission line near the site of the massive fire, minutes before the blaze broke out.It started in the area of 64 acres of land in Pulga, California, owned by Betsy Ann Cowley.RELATED: Billions worth of homes threatened by California wildfiresShe said she had received an email on Wednesday, the day before the fire started, saying that crews needed to come to her property.Cowley said the email said crews were coming to work on the high-power lines because "they were having problems with sparks."PG&E declined to discuss the email when contacted by The Associated Press.RELATED: Death toll rises in California wildfire, matching deadliestCalifornia fire investigators were at Cowley's property on Monday. 1175
