BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Health said Thursday the spread of disease is a major public health concern in mudslide-hit Zhouqu County in northwest China, after local health facilities and water resources were damaged in the disaster."Only a small part of the township area was left after the mudslides. A large number of rescue and relief workers and survivors are now living there, increasing the risk of intestinal and respiratory infectious diseases," an unnamed official from the ministry said Thursday. The official said corpses and dead animals buried under the mud may easily decay under the high temperatures, worsening the epidemic-prevention situation.Although wells have been dug up to ensure water supply, the ministry said sterilization work is arduous as the water may be contaminated during transportation and preservation.Vaccines and their refrigeration facilities, along with the networks that report infectious diseases, were destroyed in the mudslides, according to the ministry. However, with the arrival of new refrigerators and various vaccines, the first vaccination center in the county since the disaster has been set up.As of 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the death toll from the mudslides had risen to 1,144 with 600 still missing.Furthermore, the Ministry of Environmental Protection has sent more than 20 experts to Zhouqu in a bid to prevent environmental disasters. The water quality of the Bailong River remains normal, according to the ministry.

BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in different fields, as well as local governments around China, have been engaged in implementing the central authorities' strategic plans for the far western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to achieve what authorities have described as leapfrog development and lasting stability. The following are some key facts about China's efforts over the past month since the central work conference on Xinjiang's development concluded on May 19:-- In late May, the Ministry of Culture decided to launch several projects to strengthen the cultural heritage protection and cultural market supervision and boost the culture industry in Xinjiang. A working staff walks at the Xinjiang Islamic Scripture College in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, June 26, 2010. High school graduated students aged 18 to 25 across Xinjiang will be enrolled in the college, giving lectures in both Ugyur language and Arabic. About 70 percent of the classes given are religious ones. Every students in the government-funded college will get a monthly dining subsidy of 120 RMB. Graduates of the college will receive a religious bachelor's degree and serve in mosques and Islamic associations across the region.-- Also in late May, the Ministry of Transport issued a statement jointly with Xinjiang's regional government pledging to spend more money-- which will cover 50 percent of the construction costs-- for road building in Xinjiang.-- On June 1 the regulation on reform of resource taxes in Xinjiang, which was jointly issued by the Ministry of Finance and the State Administration of Taxation, took effect, marking Xinjiang as the first region in China to begin such reform. The regulation provides a shift to taxing crude oil and natural gas by price, rather than volume. The reform aims to raise local revenue for the resource-rich Xinjiang.-- From June 9 to June 12, officials of central governmental departments, including the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Commerce and the National Development and Reform Commission, as well as officials of the China Development Bank, visited Xinjiang to inspect the development of local industries.

BERLIN, July 14 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel is to start a four-day visit to China on Thursday, a move widely expected to boost the countries' bilateral economic ties and political interactions. The fourth visit of Merkel to China since she took office in 2005 is part of the high-level interactions boosting the bilateral ties.Chinese President Hu Jintao and Merkel met at the nuclear security summit in April in Washington, followed by a state visit of German President Horst Koehler to China a month later. Leaders of the two countries also discuss world affairs through hot-lines.Further boosting bilateral relations between China and Germany is in the interests of both countries, especially in trade and economy.Germany's total exports dropped 18 percent last year due to the global economic slump, while its exports to China climbed 7 percent, the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported.Sino-German relations have been increasingly important under the new, post-crisis situation, the newspaper said.Bilateral trade last year hit 105.73 billion U.S. dollars despite the global downturn, accounting for more than a quarter of the total China-Europe trade.German officials have said that a large troupe of German businessmen, from sectors such as energy, automobile, finance and retail, are among the members of the delegation led by Merkel, suggesting that trade and economic issues will top the agenda of the visit.
