If Santa were to find his way to Baltimore, Maryland, 34th Street might be the perfect place to land his sleigh and Bob Hoshier might be the perfect person to welcome him to the neighborhood. The 57-year-old man has lived on this block since the 1980s, the year he first hung up a few strands of Christmas light. His neighbors eventually got in on the decorating and now, every year, this strip of row houses is covered so thickly in Christmas lights that planes landing at nearby Baltimore Washington International Airport might mistake it for a landing strip. And this year, more than ever, Hoshier knew his gift to the neighborhood had to shine."It's been a terrible year. With the amount of people out of work, the kids that aren’t gonna have a great Christmas, and this is free, isn’t going to cost them anything," Hoshier said as he watched people walk up and down the block admiring the lights.Turns out Hoshier isn't alone in his love for light. Sales of Christmas lights are up nearly 20 percent nationwide in 2020."With the way everyone is hunkered down in their houses, it puts a little joy on kids' faces,” Hoshier said. “You only have to put one string of lights up, you don’t have to go crazy as we do.”But the holidays aside, there might be something much deeper at play when it comes to Americans’ newfound fascination with Christmas lights this year. In a year defined by darkness, psychology professor Dr. Krystine Batcho sees a reason behind those skyrocketing light sales."Holidays themselves are wonderful social or community markers for time. It reminds us that there’s a cycle to nature, the seasons' cycle," said Dr. Batcho, who teaches at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York. With so many of our routines upended, putting up lights can be a marker in time. A way for our subconscious to reset."None of us can stop time or reverse it, but when you put up those lights, you’re saying, ‘I’m going to tell the world it’s time to take a break,’" she added. In a year that has seen its fair share of darkness, Dr. Batcho sees these tiny little bulbs as lighting the way forward."It’s an act of hope, and we all are anticipating the end of the pandemic, so this takes on more meaning, more purpose,” she said. 2234

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - An altercation over a mask turned ugly at an Imperial Beach taco shop on Thursday night.Just before 10 p.m. at Don Pancho's Taco Shop, surveillance video shows a customer at the walk-up order window. He's using his shirt and sleeve to cover his face."Our cashier says he has to wear a proper face mask. The customer gets upset. The cashier offers a face mask that we have on hand for those who don't have masks. He thinks about it and gets upset," said manager Myra Espinoza. In the video, the man waves his hand, apparently waving off the mask offer, before he begins walking away. Moments later, there is a loud sound."He heard something hit the window, and the window falling and shattering down," said Espinoza. The video revealed the cause: the man took his skateboard and thrust into one of the restaurant's windows."It hurts. That's like my house. It's so disrespectful. I wouldn't go to his house and break his window," said Espinoza.Espinoza says it's not the first time someone has gotten upset over the mask policy."We have sliding windows. One gentleman grabbed the sliding windows so hard, it bounced back," said Espinoza.Still, those types of incidents are rare. Thursday's vandalism is the first time things have turned destructive."It's uncalled for and unnecessary. We're all trying to what's best and keep people safe," said Espinoza. The vandalism totaled about 0 dollars in damage. Anyone with information is asked to call the Imperial Beach Sheriff's Station at 619-498-2400. 1536

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - A new event venue is honoring the history of the South Bay, while giving people a gorgeous view for their parties and meetings.Salt Drift Pointe, at 536 13th Street, has 13,000 square feet of space. It includes a main room, a bar, patio, pier and more."It's a huge blank space," says Co-Owner Richard Inunza of the venue. "We've got a great atmosphere and great views."Inzunza and his co-owner Terry Snyder designed the venue specifically to try and pay homage to the South Bay. The "rustic wall" in the event space is painted to reflect the colors of the bay. And the name, Salt Drift Pointe, refers to the industrial history of the region.RELATED: New Chula Vista event space highlights city's rich history"When Rich and I thought about the name for this place, we wanted to grab the natural landscapes," says Snyder. "As you can see from the beautiful views we have of the salt ponds and the old salt mines, we wanted to include the salt."Salt played a big part in the South Bay story. According to San Diego History Center Historian Andy Strathman, it was the first industry that helped the region shift away from a farm-based economy during the late 1800s."You could build very large settling basins to bring the saltwater in and allow it to evaporate over time," says Strathman. "You would get the water increasingly saline, and eventually, you could harvest the salt."In the 21st century, the South Bay has shifted its economy again, trying to attract more tourists. The new Chula Vista Bayfront project is expected to bring in more than billion every year once it's completed.Inzunza and Snyder say it's fitting that a new business like theirs, which will tap into the hospitality industry, honors the past."We hope families can come and enjoy this place for years," says Snyder. To celebrate, Salt Drift Pointe is hosting a free grand opening party on Oct. 30. The public is welcome to stop by and take a look at the new venue from 5 - 8 p.m. 1993

I’m happy to report that Jill and I have tested negative for COVID. Thank you to everyone for your messages of concern. I hope this serves as a reminder: wear a mask, keep social distance, and wash your hands.— Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) October 2, 2020 256
