SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine rolls out to healthcare workers, at least four have had severe allergic reactions after getting the shot.The cases include two healthcare workers in Alaska and two in the UK. In the UK cases, both individuals carried epipens.“So these were people with a history of severe allergies and not just severe allergies like you got hives, but they had allergies where they encounter certain things in the environment and their body shuts down,” said UC San Francisco infectious disease expert Dr. Peter Chin-Hong.All four have apparently recovered.At this point, doctors aren’t sure what caused the reactions. Generally speaking, allergies when your immune system overreacts to something harmless.Pfizer’s vaccine has 10 ingredients that fit into four categories.The active ingredient is mRNA. These are temporary genetic instructions for your cells to build a small, harmless fragment of the virus’ shell to train your immune system, similar to setting up a punching bag to train a boxer.Then there are fats to stabilize and transport the mRNA, salts to maintain the pH, and sugar to prevent the solution from degrading while freezing.All the ingredients are considered standard. Dr. Chin-Hong says he was struck by what’s not in the vaccine.“They didn't have egg products or any of those kinds of things that people might be allergic to,” he said. “They didn't have live virus, which might also elicit a response.”The only ingredient with a history of allergic reactions is polyethylene glycol, or PEG, one of the fats that acts as an oily bubble for the mRNA.PEG is also in Moderna’s vaccine and it’s common; it’s found in ultrasound gel, laxatives, injectable steroids and other products.Although PEG allergies are rare, the FDA says people who are allergic to any of the 10 ingredients should not get the vaccine.However, experts say people with common allergies should not worry.“A lot of people have minor food allergies or bee-sting allergies or peanut allergies or environmental allergies,” said Dr. Christian Ramers of Family Health Centers of San Diego. “They may even carry an epi-pen because sometimes it gets severe. Those people would not be excluded from getting this vaccine.”The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology issued guidance saying people with those common allergies, including to latex and medications, “are no more likely than the general public to have an allergic reaction” to the vaccine.After every shot, people who get vaccinated have to wait 15 minutes so healthcare workers can monitor them for a reaction. Should one occur, interventions like epi-pens are very effective.The FDA said people with a history of allergic reactions to vaccines or injectable drugs can still get the shot, but they should wait 30 minutes for slightly longer monitoring.The odds of having a severe allergic reaction to any vaccine is about 1 in 760,000. That means you’re more likely to be struck by lightning in a given year, which the CDC estimates is about 1 in 500,000. 3048

"I moved in, I loved the area, I loved my neighbors," he says. "I want my boys to have this house when we grow old."But whether Rivera's family will last in long enough in the area remains to be seen. These days, Rivera is on anxiety medication. He says it's because of the home next door that became a vacation rental shortly after he moved in. He says it can rage any night of the week. "They go on arguing and yelling, and they're out there for hours," Rivera said. "They don't stop. He also says the owner, Lael Volage, is not responsive: a claim she vehemently disputes. At any rate, it's exactly the situation the City Council aimed to avoid when it passed strict regulations in 2018. The rules would have limited vacation rentals to primary homes and structures on the same parcel. The rules also would have required many hosts to pay a 5 fee to fund a new enforcement division that would have worked evenings and weekends. But Airbnb led a successful referendum, and the council rescinded the law. "It's a free-for-all," said Volage. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - City of San Diego crews spent Monday preparing for the first significant rainfall since May. “With the first rains of the season in the forecast, crews are busy clearing critical drains, putting no parking signs along flood prone streets and installing backup generators for the City’s crucial storm water pump stations,” the City of San Diego posted on twitter. "During the rains, 15 crews from the City's Storm Patrol will be actively patrolling, monitoring areas in the city and responding to instances including temporary flooding and downed trees or tree branches," added city spokesman Anthony Santacroce.The heaviest rain is expected overnight Tuesday through the day Wednesday, according to 10News meterologist Megan Parry. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Assemblymember Todd Gloria, D-San Diego, praised state lawmakers for sending a bill to the governor that would restrict gun shows at Del Mar Fairgrounds.Assembly Bill 893 would ban the sale of guns or ammunition anywhere on the Del Mar Fairgrounds property beginning in 2021, according to Gloria's office. The bill passed the California Senate 27-11 Tuesday.Anyone who violates the bill could face a misdemeanor charge, according to the bill.Gloria is a co-author of the legislation alongside Assemblywoman Tasha Boerner-Horvath, D-Encinitas, and Assemblywomen Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego.“This is a victory for gun sense and making our communities safer in San Diego,” said Gloria.“This bill is about offering more than thoughts and prayers. It’s about policy and action and listening to the communities around the Fairgrounds who no longer want these events taking place. In California, we value people over guns and this bill makes that clear."Gov. Gavin Newsom has until Oct. 13 to sign or veto the legislation.Gun shows at the fairgrounds has been hotly debated over the last year. In September 2018, the 22nd DAA's Board of Directors voted to temporarily suspend gun shows at the Del Mar Fairgrounds until the state developed new safety policies around them. The decision ended the Crossroads of the West gun show's contract with the fairgrounds after nearly three decades.In February 2019, the three Assemblymembers introduced AB 893 into the state Assembly. The bill passed the Assembly 48-16 in April. Then in June 2019, a judge ruled that gun shows could continue at the fairgrounds while the court considered a lawsuit against the fairground's decision to suspend the shows.Throughout the the back-and-forth, the legislation has been opposed by the NRA, Gun Owners of California, and the California Rifle and Pistol Association. 1867
