SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new leadership course created by a San Diego entrepreneur is breaking down barriers for minority women in business.Christelyn Karazin grew up in Los Angeles County, where she said she didn't see a lot of representation in the classroom."A lot of times I would be the only Black person in the classroom, the only Black person anywhere," Karazin said.She said she learned to get comfortable in a predominantly White world."I graduated from Loyola Marymount University as a Communications Major and graduated Cum Laude. I thought I had all the skills I needed to do really well and then I met my boss from hell," Karazin said solemnly.At the first "get to know your team" lunch, her boss said she was "lucky" to get the salary she was hired with and told the group how much she made, which was more than her colleagues. Karazin said she felt cut down at every turn.Her parents didn't have knowledge in this arena. She said her father was a sharecropper's son with an eighth-grade education and her mother was a schoolteacher.She was missing a rudder to navigate office politics, giving her the idea to launch a leadership course. It would teach other women what she's learned through decades of trials and tribulations."A big part of The Pink Pill is about learning the game and I organized it based on game pieces in chess... The king is a hierarchy management style, with very direct communication. I have a direct communication style but not everybody does." Karazin said knowing the communication style of your bosses and leveraging that will propel you upward.Lean In's State of Black Women in Corporate America Study published in 2020 shows Black women are severely underrepresented in senior management roles.Highlighting the importance of tools that help underrepresented communities rise. The Pink Pill for Business launched online on June 15."We have hundreds of people enrolled now," Karazin said. "It gives me such pleasure that the things I have went through, my failures, and this horrible experience was turned into something amazing." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local contractor is facing criminal charges for allegedly taking customers money and doing little to no work.On Monday Stephen Hage Jr. plead not guilty to charges ranging from grand theft to improper home improvement contract procedures.According to the prosecutor Hage allegedly took down payments on home improvement contracts, and after getting the money disappeared after performing little to no work.In November, a Team 10 investigation discovered some customers who said they signed a contract with American Pride Enterprises, paid thousands of dollars up front and were left with little or nothing. James Francois said he paid Hage more than ,000 for a patio.“He never showed up, never delivered any material, never did an hour of work,” Francois told 10News in November.The Contractors State License Board revoked American Pride Enterprises' license for non-compliance with an arbitration award in July of 2018.After the hearing Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin asked Hage if he had a comment about the allegations. Hage’s attorney said they had no comment. Hage is scheduled to be back in court in May. 1144

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Pacific Beach woman is appealing for tips after a hit-and-run driver struck the motor scooter she was riding, leaving her with serious injuries.On Saturday afternoon around 1 p.m., yoga teacher Fallon Lev was headed to a yoga studio, riding her motor scooter on Ingraham Street, when she exited onto Sunset Cliffs Boulevard."Just gotten onto the ramp, going a reasonable speed," said Lev.In a one-lane section, she looked to her left and felt a car right next to her."It bumped me, causing the scooter wiggle back and forth. Instantly, I'm like on the floor, and my whole body is tumbleweeding on the cement. I must have gone five or six times," said Lev.She says the driver kept going. Later, at the hospital came the diagnosis and surgery."I broke my pelvis in two different areas and have these two bars sticking out of my hipbone and a bar straight across," said Lev.She also suffered a painful road rash and a broken tooth. Her road to recovery will be a long one. Lev, a yoga teacher whose income was greatly impacted by the pandemic, is trying to stay positive. The actions of the driver make her angry."I'm trying not to affect it my healing. Of course, it's extremely disturbing and disappointing ... There is no way the driver didn’t see me go down. They actively chose to leave me," said Lev.In fact, Lev remembers feeling like this was no accident. She was leaving traffic on a one-lane section of the roadway."I felt like it was on purpose. I wasn’t going fast enough, and that was my payback," said Lev.Lev is now hoping for tips to track down a hit-and-run driver."The driver deserves to know that’s not the way you treat a human being," said Lev.Lev recalls an older model, maroon sedan, which may have been the car right behind the car that hit her. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A little more than a year in, homeless people using the new storage lockers in Sherman Heights are still having trouble finding homes.According to new numbers released by the San Diego Housing Commission, 895 people have used the storage lockers since they opened last June. But only 9%, 79 of them have been able to find longer-term or permanent housing.Lisa Jones, the Senior Vice President of Homeless Housing Innovations for the SD Housing Commission, admits that number is low. But she says people should not look at it as a condemnation of the project. She says the locker facility isn't designed to help people find housing, but to direct them to resources that can."If this were a shelter program, that's a number we'd expect to be higher," Jones says. "But we see it as a positive number, considering the fact that we don't actually have case management services on that site."However, the storage facility seems to be struggling to connect homeless people with those resources. According to the same study, only 22% of the people using the shelters are currently working with a case manager or social service provider. Of those, only 45.5% met with a case manager in the last week before the survey.But, Jones says the storage site still serves as a critical gateway for homeless people to get help."It's an engagement opportunity that's unique because they're building relationships with the folks as they come in," she says. "They can help reorient them and get them reconnected to services if they're not. And if they are in services, they can make sure they're accessing them to the best effect."Jones also says the new numbers show that neighbors fears of the facility bringing more homeless people to the area are unfounded. An average of 120 people visit the site each day, but they rarely stay in the Sherman Heights area.Before the storage facility opened, 12.5% of the people who answered the survey said they slept in Sherman Heights or Logan Heights. That number has since dropped to 10%. Meanwhile, the number of people sleeping downtown has gone up from 66% to 69.5%.RELATED: Timeline shows history of San Diego's Homeless Storage CentersJones says one of the most significant bright spots from the survey is the fact that 68% of the people using the lockers say they're still actively looking for a place to live. She says that's particularly encouraging because 73% of the facility's users say they are chronically homeless."When you get into that chronic homelessness, your challenges get greater," says Jones. "To some degree, you get disenfranchised or frustrated with the experience. It's the kind of thing where the longer you're homeless, the more challenging that life back into housing can become."Jones also says the lockers have allowed more homeless people to be able to work and go to school. Because of the lockers, they don't have to bring their belongings with them everywhere they go or worry about them being stolen overnight."We have people in these programs that are employed, that are bringing in work boots and tools at night because they don't want to store them on the street," says Jones. "We have people that use the programs that are in school, and they keep books and laptops and things like that in there."There's a value to the safety and security that you can't see in numbers." 3361
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A growing mountain of rideshare bikes at a San Diego metal recycling plant is raising eyebrows.Hundreds of Ofo bikes have been stacking up over the last few days at Ekco Metals in Logan Heights.Ofo says they are simply recycling their own bikes and bike parts that are beyond repair.The bikes were sold as scrap metal at each, according to staff.Ofo says this is a part of a bikes life cycle and they have been doing this in other markets.
