San Diego (KGTV) There’s a battle over prime real estate in Hillcrest. There were plans to use the Third Avenue location for luxury housing, but some county leaders are hoping to use the space as a way to serve the homeless dealing with mental health challenges. Over a decade ago, the location once served as a center for adolescents. The county had plans to use the 7-acre lot for luxury condos. “I don’t believe that the public policy changes we face as a region is a shortage of luxury condos,” says County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. “I believe the public policy challenge we face as a region is an investment in behavioral health services.”The vacant space on Third Avenue sits less than a mile from Scripps Mercy Hospital and UCSD Medical Center, Hillcrest. “We have 50 to 100 patients in our emergency rooms every day that need some form of mental health services,” says Patty Maysent, CEO of UC San Diego Health. The facility would offer services like psychiatric care and substance abuse. “A lot of folks go to the emergency room, get the most expensive care, get stabilized, and they have nowhere to go,” said Fletcher. While some fight the constitutionality of the forced closures, others say they do not mind waiting for updated state and federal reopening guidelines. It's another Sunday service to an empty hall at Rock Church in Point Loma, but Senior Pastor Miles McPherson says he still reaches a broad audience online. "Ministry is happening," McPherson said. "We are having church every day. We're just not having service in this building."Friday, faith leaders rejoiced when President Trump deemed houses of worship "essential.""The Governors need to do the right thing and allow these very important essential places of faith to open right now, for this weekend. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A proposed homeless housing project in the Mission Hills community might face a snag. Mission Hills Heritage is working on getting a historic designation for the old Mission Hills library on Washington Street. The building is one of several sites the city is considering for a public housing project. The city is looking to build permanent supportive housing. Permanent supportive housing is not a shelter. It's a space helped paid for by rental assistance and offers supportive services to assist homeless people with disabilities or homeless families with disabled family members. Barry Hager, with Mission Hills Heritage, says although there is some backlash from the community about the homeless housing project, his group is merely fighting to save history. They are not taking sides on the homeless housing issue, but their problem is the project would require the demolition of the building. He says the building is worth preserving because it was built in the early 1960s and is a prime example of mid-century modern or mid-century style architecture. “It’s really the only mid-century building in the commercial core area of Mission Hills,” Hager said. “This is really a preservation project, and preservation issue, not an issue about homeless housing.” A city says they are working to find out how a historical designation could impact any plans for the site, but for now, they are proceeding as planned.
