SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- This Christmas local chefs and volunteers gave the gift of gourmet meals for those in need. It was a two day process. “Just Call Us” Volunteers prepared the food, from scratch, before serving it to the homeless. The volunteers made enough to feed over 400 people. Early this afternoon, the chefs and volunteers delivered the food to three different shelters. The largest being the Alpha Project tent, in Downtown. “We all appreciate it. They all deserve a good meal,” says a staff member with the Alpha Project. Over a dozen volunteers donated their time at the Alpha Project. More volunteers visited Rachel’s Women’s Shelter and San Diego Center for Children. All of the items are donated from Specialty Produce, Cupcakes Squared and Sprouts Farmers Market. SAN DIEGO, Calif (KGTV) - A series of problems at a handful of California gas refineries have caused prices to surge over the last month.According to the Automobile Club of Southern California, the average cost of gas in California is .955 per gallon. That's more than a dollar more than the national average of .811. Alabama has the lowest gas prices in the country at .499 per gallon.Because of strict environmental regulations, most of the gas in California has to be made in state. So when local refineries go off-line, it directly impacts prices.AAA says at least 6 of the 12 gas producing plants in the state have had problems in the last month, leading to shut-downs.On March 15, a fire shut down the Wilmington Phillips 66 refinery.Ten days later, the Valero refinery in the Bay Area shut down when a scrubber malfunctioned, sending black smoke into the air.Flaring issues caused outages at two plans in Southern California, the Chevron plant in El Segundo and the Valero in Wilmington.Meanwhile, PBF Energy in Torrance had routine maintenance scheduled, which decreased production."We don't have pipelines that can pipe relatively cheap gasoline to use from other states," says Marie Montgomery with the Automobile Club of Southern California. "We have to rely on shipping of gasoline when our refineries have problems."According to the California Energy Commission, refineries in Washington and the US Gulf Coast can produce gas for California, as can refineries in Eastern Canada, Finland, Germany, the US Virgin Islands, the Middle East and Asia. But it takes time for those shipments to arrive.In the first week of April, the state didn't receive a single drop of imported gasoline.As we wait, local refineries have dipped into their reserves to meet demand, taking two million barrels out of reserves."The imported gas is going to be coming here, there's no doubt about that," says Montgomery. "We've got the highest prices in the country by far right now. SAN DIGEO (KGTV) - The number of calls to San Diego County’s Child Abuse Hotline has dropped by more than half since schools across the region closed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease.County data provided to 10News shows a more than 50 percent decrease in calls regarding allegations of child abuse or neglect.According to the county, for the week of March 9 to 15, there were 1,859 calls. A week later, when schools closed beginning March 16 to 22, there were only 863 calls.RELATED: Multiple San Diego nursing homes dealing with coronavirus cases“In normal times, I would be thrilled, but this isn’t a good news story,” said Sheila Boxley, who’s the president of the Child Abuse Prevention Center. “This is something of grave concern because we know that children are now not in school, they are not in childcare. SAN DIEGO -- Nestled off of Camino Del Rio West in the Midway District, the Body Shop sits between a Navis Pack and Ship site and the "Les Girls" adult entertainment club on Riley Street. The Body Shop strip club welcomed customers for five decades before it closed last December. This week, Rock Church announced they'll be moving in. Rock Church has five campuses across San Diego County. They have a school and now, they have plans for the property in the Midway District. They said the purchase is about more than repurposing a strip club - it's about transforming the neighborhood. "We thought it was a great idea because we know the pain that goes on in that building," said Miles McPherson, pastor at Rock Church. "Not just the women, but the men who go there and their families.”The church’s main campus on Rosecrans is roughly a mile and a half away from the new property. "We don’t know what we're going to do with the building, we just know what it won’t be used for," McPherson said. For decades, parents have explained to their kids why there's a huge sign that says 'nude girls' in their neighborhood, he said. Soon, it won't be necessary."It would be nice to put 'Rock Church' on top of that billboard, but that's another step," he said. "We’ll get to that. But you know the people in that community have been looking at that building for 50 years, and hopefully we can put something more positive in that building.”In addition to taking over the building, McPherson said the church plans to do outreach in the community. SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)-- County supervisors announced that we are just days away until San Diegans can finally relax on the beach.But some are jumping the gun.It was the announcement San Diegans were waiting for."On Tuesday, June 2, passive activities will be allowed on beaches, so long as groups stay within their household units, social distance from other non-family members, and facial coverings," San Diego County Supervisor, Greg Cox announced on Thursday.Supervisors said sitting on the sand, towels, and chairs will be allowed. But sports such as football and volleyball will continue to be prohibited. Parking lots and piers will also remain closed. However, many people seemed to forget about the start date: Tuesday, June 2.On the evening of the County announcement, a 10News viewer witnessed a graduation party in Oceanside. The photos showed a mass gathering with many people sitting on the sand, with almost no one practicing social distancing or wearing masks. "I'm sure everybody is anxious to get out with their family, sit on the beach and enjoy the nice weather," Solana Beach visitor, Labib Samarrai said. But on Saturday, most people seemed to be following the rules at Solana Beach."I think everybody is now maybe over-educated, but it's all good," Samarrai said. Lifeguards at Solana Beach and Pacific Beach say they are still focused on educating the public, instead of actively ticketing visitors who disregard the County Public Health order. "They're only telling people that are not where they want them," Pacific Beach surfer Jake Curran said. For Curran, the passive activity phase does not make much of a difference in his usual routine. But for his girlfriend, June 2 can't come soon enough. "She has been visiting for the past month, trying to find activities for her and I to do while she is in town," Curran said.
