SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The White House insisted Thursday that the CDC and the public will continue to have access to hospital data related to the COVID-19 pandemic, trying to quell concerns after the Trump administration directed a private technology firm to collect hospital data instead of the nation’s premier public health agency.Since March, the CDC has been collecting data from hospitals on bed space, COVID tests and other key metrics, like the availability of personal protective equipment, ventilators, and certain drugs.White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Thursday the CDC-run system, the National Healthcare Safety Network, was only capturing 81 percent of the nation’s hospitals.She said the new system, run by TeleTracking Technologies, will provide a more complete picture with faster reporting to the White House Coronavirus Task Force. Hospitals began sending data to the new database on Wednesday.“The intent of this is we need to make sure there is daily data given to Dr. [Deborah] Birx and others running point on Remdesivir and identifying hotspots,” McEnany said.The change comes at a time when President Trump has sparred with the CDC over school reopening guidelines, but CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield said he supported the move.However, critics see the move as the latest effort by the president to politicize science. Four former CDC directors wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post this week raising concerns about the president's efforts to "undermine" the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.“I see this as a big red flag. CDC has been sidelined throughout the response,” said Dr. Richard Besser, the former acting director under President Barack Obama.Dr. Besser told ABC News the hospital data should be kept with the nation’s premier health scientists, although he acknowledged the CDC database had limitations.“The data systems have to be improved. They've been underfunded, but why set up a system that bypasses the nation's public health agency? It doesn't make sense and it concerns me about the influence of politics on what should be good public health science,” he said.McEnany said the CDC would still have access to the data along with the public, although the last update posted to the CDC website is from July 14.Hospitals report data to the federal government in different ways. In some cases, hospitals manually input information to the federal database. In other cases, hospitals report data to the state or another intermediary, which passes the information along.Scripps Health said it reports COVID-related information through an intermediary, the California Health Association, so the federal database change hasn’t affected its hospitals.Sharp Healthcare and Palomar Health said the transition to the new system has been smooth on their end.“We haven’t had any problems uploading our data,” said Palomar Health spokesman Derryl Acosta. 2914
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thousa---nds of businesses across California have permanently closed their doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.According to Yelp's local economic report, restaurants and retail continue to struggle, and total closures nationwide have started to increase.The September report noted more than 19,000 businesses in California have permanently closed."The states with the most closures are home to the hardest-hit metros: Las Vegas in Nevada, Honolulu in Hawaii, and several of the largest California urban areas all are among the metro areas with the highest total closure and permanent closure rates (San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles and others), with roughly 20 businesses per thousand temporarily or permanently closing their doors since March 1," the report stated.The report said professional services and solo proprietors generally have been able to weather the storm and maintain a relatively low fraction of closures since March 1."Small business, the one thing you know for sure is you're going to have to adapt and figure out real quick what you have to do no matter what comes your way," said AJ Williams, of Hammonds Gourmet Ice Cream.Williams said he remembers the exact moment he learned about the initial stay at home order."I saw the news flash come across and immediately told my entire staff, hey, in the middle of a shift, shut the doors and close things down," he said.Williams said he kept Hammonds Gourmet Ice Cream closed for the first few weeks of the stay at home order. As an essential business, he was able to slowly reopen with new restrictions and safety measures in place.Through a steady stream of customers and some cost-cutting measures, Williams has been able to keep the lights on."If you compare it to when COVID-19 started, we're doing great," he said. "If you compare it to where we were last year, not so great."Williams considers himself lucky. Not every business has survived."We've lost permanently now 13 percent of our businesses," said Jason Wells, executive director of the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce. "That's about 97 businesses."Wells explained that COVID is having an impact on the border businesses, but in that region, it’s the border restrictions put in place because of COVID that's keeping tens of thousands of shoppers from doing business.In March, the United States restricted all non-essential travel across its borders. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), "non-essential" travel includes travel that is considered tourism or recreational in nature.On Twitter, acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf released a statement saying, "We continue to work with our Canadian and Mexican partners to slow the spread of COVID-19. Accordingly, we have agreed to extend the limitation of non-essential travel at our shared land ports of entry through October 21.”Wells said if the government extends the restrictions, it could have dire consequences."If those restrictions aren't lifted in October, more than half of our 786 businesses are at risk just because of the sheer dependence we have on the holiday season and the Mexican shopper," Wells said.Businesses OpeningWhile some businesses are struggling to not close, there are others in California opening for the first time."When this thing happened (Coronavirus), I decided it was time to go out on my own and go for it," said Colin Duncan, owner of Colin's Barber Shop. "Take all my savings and just see what happens."Duncan said he got the keys to what's now Colin's Barber Shop in San Luis Obispo at the end of March. He opened in June and hasn't looked back."It’s been a roller coaster that's for sure," Duncan said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Rock Church is making holiday giving even easier, teaming up with Express Feedback for Good to raise money for their Toys for Joy campaign.Under the new program, people can sign up to take on-line surveys. For each one they take, the Church will get towards their holiday fundraiser."This is a life or death situation for some kids and some families," says Pastor Miles McPherson.The Toys for Joy program is now in its 23rd year. Each year the Church helps around 20,000 families with food, clothing, toys, and more for the holidays. McPherson says he hopes the new survey tool will inspire people to do more."The express feedback tool gives people the opportunity to do something to help somebody, but we want them to take the next step, touch a person, smile at a person, hear someone's story," he says.The surveys only take about one minute each, and there's a limit of 100 per person. The Church says they hope to raise 0,000 from the surveys, to help supplement the other donations they get each year.The company, Express Feedback for Good, takes the information from the survey and sells it to businesses to help them serve their customers better."It's a win/win for both parties," says Product Manager Dena Coykendall. "The non-profit can create resources, and business can collect information from a crowd that's more representative."This year, the Rock Church will have four locations for their Toys for Joy campaign on December 14th. It's amazing, as this building wasn't even here the last time the Padres were in the playoffs."Chip is a huge Padres fan, and although he's about fifty yards from the field, he makes sure his voice is always heard."it's going to be loud, " he says. "Especially with all the other balconies, I anticipate it will be a home-field advantage. I have a megaphone and I can be as loud as I need to with the megaphone."Chip normally watches about 80% of Padres home games from his balcony and while most seasons have been pretty tough, he says there is nothing better than playoff baseball."It's tough that we can't be in the stadium, but with the energy level they know we're here, they can here us we got horns and bells and whistles. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Blood Bank will test all blood donations for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies from now through the end of July.The blood bank says it will use those test results to help identify people who can donate convalescent plasma. Donors who test positive for antibodies will be able to donate COVID-19 convalescent plasma the next time they donate.The plasma can then be used to treat coronavirus patients.The test will be able to detect if a person's immune system has developed COVID-19 antibodies, whether or not the person showed symptoms. It will not detect if a person has an active infection or recent exposure to someone who is infected.To donate, donors must be at least 17-years-old, weigh 114 pounds, and be in overall good health. The blood bank says the test is authorized by the Food and Drug Administration for emergency use. All reactive and nonreactive results will be reported to the California Department of Public Health.
