SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The South Bay continues to be devastated by the coronavirus, with several of the hardest hit ZIP codes in the region.According to San Diego County data, the hardest hit ZIP code is 92154. The area, which includes Otay Mesa and parts of Imperial Beach, has the most cases in all of the county. In the last 30 days, cases have jumped from 3,290 to 4,528. Over 1,200 of the cases in this ZIP code happened in the last month.Other ZIP codes in the region have more than doubled their case rate in recent weeks. These ZIP codes have a large Latino population; Latinos have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic, making up a majority of the county's positive cases while only making up roughly 34% of the population.INTERACTIVE MAP: CONFIRMED COVID-19 CASES IN SD COUNTYNancy Maldonado from the Chicano Federation said it's no surprise the region continues to see the high number in cases. Maldonado explained that many of those who live in the region are essential, frontline workers and often times live in multi-generational households.The Chicano Federation has distributed over 7,000 COVID-19 safety kits to the community, including things like masks, hand sanitizer and thermometers.Maldonado said the focus of the federation has been to continue raising awareness about this virus, encouraging testing, and encouraging the community to stay home during the upcoming holidays. 1415
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Padres’ weekend series against the Mariners has been moved from Seattle to San Diego due to poor air quality in the Pacific Northwest.In a statement, the Padres said: “Due to air quality concerns in Seattle and out of an abundance of caution, the scheduled series between the Padres and Mariners from September 18-20 has been moved to Petco Park in San Diego. Friday’s game will begin at 6:40pm, Saturday’s game will begin at 6:10pm and Sunday’s game at 1:10pm. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thousands of sailors and Marines returned to San Diego Wednesday, just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.The USS Boxer brought more than 4,500 sailors and Marines of the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group and 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit to home port at Naval Base San Diego.Many service members arrived to friends and family members — in some cases, new family members — who have waited seven months to be together.Wednesday, the USS John P. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego City Council approved dozens of regulation changes Tuesday that Mayor Kevin Faulconer says will increase the supply of housing while lowering development cost.The plan aims to create more homes, lower development costs and promote smart growth.The approval includes changes to the Affordable Housing Density Bonus program, which means developers will be able to build more units in the allotted space.The council also approved Faulconer’s 46 recommended updates to the land development code including easing zoning regulations to create more live/work developments, implementing parking exemptions for designated historic structures and changing ground floor height limits to allow for three-story buildings in 30-feet high limits.Some proposed changes to the Density Bonus Program include: 841
