UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in New York Tuesday afternoon to attend a series of meetings of the United Nations.It is Wen's second participation in UN meetings at the UN headquarters since 2008. Chinese President Hu Jintao also attended UN conferences last year.During Wen's three-day stay here, he is expected to attend and address a UN high-level meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the general debate of the 65th session of the UN General Assembly, a summit of the UN Security Council member states and a high-level discussion panel on AIDS and the MDGs.He will also meet with world leaders, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Sino-U.S. friendship groups, overseas Chinese and foreign media in New York.About 140 heads of state and government will attend the three-day MDGs high-level meeting at the UN headquarters, where they will make new commitments to achieving the MDGs before the 2015 deadline.The MDGs, forged at a UN summit in 2000, includes eight ambitious goals, such as reducing extreme poverty in the world by half, cutting infant and maternal mortality, achieving universal primary education and halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and other diseases which kill millions each year.In a joint interview with the UN-based Chinese media last week, UN chief Ban voiced his confidence in China to meet those goals on time and urged other world leaders to keep their promises on the MDGs.

BEIJING, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Public Security Minster Meng Jianzhu on Sunday urged police forces from Beijing and six provincial-level regions around the capital to share information and work closely to beef up security work.Meng made the remarks at a work conference on police cooperation in regions around Beijing.Police chiefs of Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanxi, Liaoning, Shandong and Inner Mongolia signed a framework agreement for the cooperation.Liu Qi, chief of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), also called for joint and efficient efforts of the police in the regions around Beijing to ensure the regions' security and stability.

BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's week-long National Day holiday took in 280 million yuan (42 million U.S. dollars) in film box office receipts, up 12 percent over last year, said sources in the cinema industry.Half of all ticket sales were for "Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame," a film that debuted on Sept. 29, starring renowned Hong Kong actor Andy Lau and actress Carina Lau, along with mainland actress Li Bingbing.Director John Woo's new film, "Reign of Assassins," had sales of 30 million yuan during the golden week, which critics say was "ordinary" in box office performance but a "good film." Woo is known internationally for his 2000 film "Mission: Impossible II."The Leonardo DiCaprio film "Inception" continues its climb and took in 50 million between Oct. 1 and 7, making it the fourth foreign film ever to take in more than 400 million yuan in the Chinese mainland's box office.
