LAS VEGAS — There's nothing like a puppy to brighten someone's day. And while a new furry best friend is a popular holiday gift, there's a word of caution about the hidden risk of getting a puppy from a pet store. Questions are being raised after the Humane Society released undercover video they shot at the Petland store near Summerlin, Nevada. The Humane Society had members of their organization get jobs there and at a store in Kennesaw, Georgia to document conditions they've been trying to expose for years. The video was shot in November at Petland in the Boca Park shopping center. The Humane Society claims the store is just waiting for the Maltese puppy in the video to die, and that people need to know the truth about those doggies in the window. "Since 2006, we received over 1,200 complaints from consumers who have purchased sick and sometimes dying puppies from Petland," says Humane Society Western Region Director Heather Carpenter. The animal welfare organization offers this video as proof that there's a problem when pets are sold for profit. But Boca Park Petland store owner Jeff Fausett says not so fast."My reaction is it's a total fabrication of the events," Fausett says.He says the Humane Society is trying to make it look like Petland was warehousing a dog until it died. "That's never happened here. That's not what we're about," he says. There are a few simple facts he wants to make clear."This was not a dog that, one, was in our kennel for weeks," Fausett says. "It was at the vet for weeks. It had a birth defect and it went back. It wasn't going to die."According to Fausett, after Petland sent the puppy out for medical care due to a respiratory infection, the veterinarian discovered the dog's air passage was too narrow. Fausett says he would never sell a puppy with that condition and surgery would cost several thousand dollars. So he sent the dog back to the breeder. "He re-homes those dogs when he gets them. He doesn't destroy them," Fausett explains. "So whether we re-home it or he re-homes, it is academic." 2085
It is not a secret that tickets to NBA games are expensive. When that ticket gives you the opportunity to watch reigning NBA finals MVP Kawhi Leonard play, the price goes up even more. So it is understandable why many were upset that Leonard sat out on Wednesday in what was initially described for "load management." The Los Angeles Clippers ended up losing Wednesday's game 129-124 without Leonard. Following Wednesday's controversy, Clippers coach Doc Rivers was asked about Leonard's status. While he said that Leonard is healthy, the NBA claimed that Leonard has been dealing with a nagging injury. For Rivers' comments, the Clippers were fined ,000 by the league.“Following additional review of the LA Clippers not playing Kawhi Leonard in last night’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks, the NBA has confirmed that the team’s decision to sit Leonard for management of an injury was consistent with league rules," the NBA said in a statement. "The team has reasonably determined that Leonard is suffering from an ongoing injury to the patella tendon in his left knee and has been placed by the team at this time on an injury protocol for back-to-back games.“The NBA has fined the Clippers ,000 for statements, including by head coach Doc Rivers, that were inconsistent with Leonard’s health status.”In July, Leonard signed a 3-year, 3 million contract with the Clippers. Despite the NBA's determination that the Clippers were managing a lingering injury, fans were frustrated that Leonard was unable to perform. Imagine paying for a ticket weeks ago/months ago to see the Bucks vs Clippers only to find out the day of the game that Kawhi isn’t playing ??? Load management ??? ... you haven’t even played 10 games yet !!!— Bookie Assassin (@BookieAssassins) 1783
It may seem like an ordinary scene: Children and adults playing on pink seesaws, carelessly laughing and chatting with each other. But this is a playground unlike any other. These custom-built seesaws have been placed on both sides of a slatted steel border fence that separates the United States and Mexico. The idea for a "Teeter-Totter Wall" came from Ronald Rael, an architecture professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and Virginia San Fratello, an associate professor of design at San Jose State University -- and it was a long time coming. In 2009, the two designed a concept for a binational seesaw at the border for a book, "Borderwall as Architecture," which uses "humor and inventiveness to address the futility of building barriers," 768
