SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Just a few weeks ago, coronavirus testing was hard to come by. But now, many San Diegans are finding it easier to get tested. Some are purchasing at-home test kits online, at no up-front cost.Raechel Kadoya is not a clinician, nor is she at a doctor's office. She is the co-owner of Soichi Sushi, giving herself a COVID-19 test."I want to take advantage of being proactive," Kadoya said as she swabbed her nose.Since the modified re-opening of her restaurant in University Heights, she and her staff have been cautious about coronavirus exposure. That is why she ordered the Pixel by Labcorp at-home COVID-19 test kit for her entire staff."I think that it is my responsibility as a business owner, not only to my staff but to my customers and my family, to make sure that everybody is doing business here safely," Kadoya said.This is the staff's second round of testing. Kadoya said the first one required multiple doctors referrals just to get a drive-through appointment an hour away."We were able to find a place in Lake Elsinore, so we all had to drive up there," Kadoya said.Dr. Abi Olulade, a family medicine physician at Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group, said the accessibility of these at-home tests is a big draw."It definitely is something that is very convenient for consumers," Dr. Olulade said.But she suggested customers do their homework before they order."They should be looking at whether or not the tests that they are using have been FDA authorized, and it's not just some random test that they found on the internet," Dr. Olulade said.As of June 12, 2020, seven at-home COVID-19 test kits have the FDA's emergency use authorization. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Military families say the squalid living conditions detailed in a new report by the Military Family Advisory Network released Wednesday don't fully portray their struggle.In Murphy Canyon, the issues range from mice, to dry rot to rust. Shelby Stevens' husband is in the Navy, and they've been stationed in San Diego for three years. On the porch she pointed out what looked like half painted pergolas and said they were full of dry rot. Inside there is no microwave, and the kitchen was much the same as it was originally in the 1990's. "We've got ant problems, roaches, mice," Stevens showed 10News her shed in the back yard. Inside there's half a dozen mice traps, with little black dots covering the floor. Stevens says those are mice droppings.On her phone, an image of a dead mouse, she said her dog killed. These issues echoed throughout the military community.A woman who didn't wish to be identified, for fear of retaliation, said her closet door had loose rusted screws she had to keep out of her toddlers' reach. She said the repair work on a clogged toilet was shoddy, saying the men left mold, and poop around the base of the toilet.The new report by the Military Family Advisory Network breaks down the problems renters face by base. For San Diego military families, the top two issues are maintenance and mold."We absolutely know that the nearly 17,000 who responded to our questionnaire, this is their reality," Shannon Razsadin, Executive Director of MFAN, said.The survey went out last January and ran for a week. Razsadin hopes the report gives military families a tool to create change.The military moms who spoke with 10News say it's not a complete picture of what they're dealing with. Stevens said 17,000 people across the country is a very small part of the military community as a whole. She said in the last several months their service has declined."We've had no shows from maintenance men, we've had no shows from contractors who are scheduled to come out to my house, no show, no call. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It’s been a historic wildfire season in California, made even more complicated by the pandemic.Emergency officials in San Diego County continue to shore up evacuation plans and brace for the worst, as more than a dozen wildfires in Northern California reveal the challenges of responding to two crises at once.As tens of thousands of Californians fled the wildfires last month, some turned to a shelter at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. But with new rules in place to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, the shelter quickly filled up.The Civic Auditorium reached capacity August 21 and had to turn some evacuees away. The shelter remains at capacity, according to Cal Fire.About 27,000 people remained under evacuation orders as of Tuesday, according to Cal Fire. The Red Cross and partner organizations were sheltering more than 4,500 Californians in various settings as of Monday night.The Red Cross has put some displaced residents in hotels, a strategy that emergency workers in San Diego County are planning to emulate.“The county, since the beginning of the pandemic, has been working really proactively to identify and contract with hotels and motels to meet the unique housing and lodging needs of our community members,” said Senior Emergency Services Coordinator Julie Jeakle.With help from the Red Cross, the county has amassed a list of nearly 100 hotels and motels in San Diego County that could be called upon as emergency shelters. Some of these hotels were previously tapped as quarantine sites for individuals exposed to COVID-19.Traditional shelters in gyms or at schools won’t go away, but they’ll look different. Red Cross volunteers will conduct temperature checks and health screenings. People who show symptoms will be taken to another location to isolate, Jeakle said.“Individuals can also expect to see individually packaged meals, instead of the cafeteria style-meal service we’ve traditionally provided in the past,” she said. “They may also see some health and behavioral health services provided virtually.”But what if there’s a widespread event, with tens of thousands of evacuations like in Northern California?In the early days of the fire in Santa Cruz County, several hotels filled up. The county had to urge tourists to leave so evacuees could get access to rooms.San Diego County has turned to the Mission Valley stadium site for mass evacuations, including during the 2007 Witch Fire. But that site is currently under construction, and emergency responders would need permission from the stadium’s new owner, San Diego State.Another option: the Del Mar Fairgrounds.The fairgrounds was used as a large animal shelter four times in recent history: 2003, 2007, 2014 and 2017. But in 2007 it also hosted people, and Jeakle said the county had been in recent talks with the venue.Determining which site -- or sites -- will serve as an evacuation shelter will be based on several factors, including the size and severity of the emergency, Jeakle said.“We’re certainly here to serve if and when we’re needed,” said Del Mar Fairgrounds marketing director Jennifer Hellman.Hellman said the fairgrounds would have procedures in place requiring mask-wearing, social distancing and increased cleaning, and there would be hand sanitizer stations deployed throughout the site. 3325
