SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local marine is recovering from COVID-19 while deployed overseas.Jennifer Dulaney says her husband, Kyle, was deployed in April and is serving at a base in Okinawa. He tested for COVID-19 earlier this month.“My husband called me on a Monday morning as I was getting ready for work and said he felt like he was getting symptoms,” Jennifer said.Kyle got worse and was eventually sent to the ICU. His condition began to worsen that he qualified for the Remdesivir. It was described as an experimental drug, and doctors needed Jennifer’s permission to administer it to Kyle.Jennifer is a nurse and knew that COVD-19 could be very severe.“I know where COVID can go, they can spiral downwards real fast,” she said, “so for me, the benefits outweighed the risk.”Jennifer said he began to show improvement on the fifth day. She was able to him Friday morning.“They were drawing his lab work because that’s one of the things with the experimental (treatment), they have to watch things very closely,” she described, “but he actually laughed on the phone, he was able to talk to me without coughing. It’s amazing.”She hopes her husband will be out of the ICU within the next two days.During the difficult time, Jennifer took a leave of absence from her job. She said it was difficult to continue working as a nurse while worrying about her husband’s health. So to help with finances, a friend started a GoFundMe for their family. The GoFundMe has received so much more than they expected, she’s going to donate what they don’t spend to a non-profit that helps military families.“It’s so amazing, so I want to take the amazing, so I wanted to pay it forward,” she said. 1688

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man from El Salvador has been granted asylum in the United States after having been sent back to Mexico to await his trial.According to his attorney, Narciso Cruz, the man is only the second person to receive asylum who had been sent back to Mexico due to the Trump administration’s Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP.)“This individual is a bit of a rarity,” said Cruz, referring to his client’s success in court. But his story is not a rarity.Marcos fled violence in El Salvador and did no want to use his full name for this story, still fearing the gang he fled in El Salvador.“They’re a terrorist group,” said Marcos. He became targeted earlier this year after he tried to help his cousin who was being recruited by the gang. After he interfered, he started receiving death threats.“They will kill you and your entire family,” he said.He traveled to the United States, crossing the border on June 25 somewhere near Tecate. He said he wandered in the desert for five days before he was eventually picked up by Border Patrol agents and taken to a holding facility. Within a day he said he was sent back across the border to Mexico where he would wait for his case to be heard. The Trump Administration implemented the MPP in January. Despite some pushback from the courts, the policy, also called “remain in Mexico,” was allowed to go forward. As of September 1, the U.S government has sent 42,000 asylum seekers to Mexico, according to the Department of Homeland Security. As for Marcos, his case is not officially done yet. The government reserved its right to appeal the court’s decision. They have until October 25 to file an appeal. 1659

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new mother got a big surprise when she walked into her garage in Linda Vista: A ripped fence and a missing, pricey bike.Kristen Farias had just put her 3-month-old daughter in the car early Thursday evening when she noticed her garage door was open. She and her husband have lived at the City Scene condo complex for eight years."Felt violated. Something just didn't seem right," said Farias. That something was a hole in a fence that separates her garage from her neighbor's. All of her belongings were untouched, except for something expensive: a Cannondale R500 triathlon bike - loaded with accessories - valued at some ,000."You just feel icky. Someone knows how to get into your belongings and take your stuff," said Farias. In this case the 'how' included the neighbor's garage door accidentally left open. The thief got into that garage and cut open up the shared fence. Detectives told Farias of a rash of other incidents. "Four times in the same area in the past month," said Farias. In each of the cases, the burglar somehow broke into one garage, then went to work on the fence."Just means people are lurking in the neighborhood, following you and seeing when there is an opportunity. That's scary," said Farias.Farias says the thief knew exactly what he wanted, leaving behind less expensive items. Her big fear is what could happen when the thief strikes the next time. She can't help but think she and her baby could have walked in on the burglar."Makes me sick to my stomach. Who knows how it could have went," said Farias.Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1650

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A jury Tuesday found a man guilty of beating and raping two women on consecutive days in 2016. Jeremiah Ira Williams, 26, was found guilty on multiple charges Tuesday, including forcible rape and false imprisonment. Williams now faces 100 years to life in prison. His sentencing will be on May 30. A prosecutor Monday urged the jury to convict Williams, who is accused of choking and raping two women in different parts of San Diego on consecutive days in 2016.A defense attorney argued that police infused suspicions from the second case into the initial attack and mishandled evidence.Williams is charged with 13 counts including forcible rape, false imprisonment, sodomy and making a criminal threat.Earlier in the trial, Williams was removed from the courtroom for being disruptive and was not present Tuesday as attorneys presented their final arguments.Deputy District Attorney Trisha Amador told jurors that Williams followed Jane Doe #1 from a parking structure to her University City apartment on August 13.With her keys in the door, she was knocked down, robbed at gunpoint and choked to a point where she thought she was going to die, the prosecutor said. After being taken inside the apartment, Williams beat and raped her, Amador argued. The next day, Williams beat and raped a woman working as a prostitute after meeting her in a motel in Grantville, Amador said.Jane Doe #2 was reportedly so terrified that she broke a window and jumped through it to get away.Deputy Public Defender Thomas Bahr told the jury that a detective had a feeling the two sexual assaults may be connected and jumped to conclusions in an attempt to solve the first attack.Bahr also told the jury that Jane Doe #2 lied throughout the investigation and said her story contained inconsistencies.Bahr said Jane Doe #1 was a “true victim,” yet she couldn’t assist police in making a composite sketch of her attacker. 1943

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Carlos resident is sharing video of what he believes is a large mountain lion running across a busy street in his neighborhood.Mike Johanning was driving home from dinner at 11 p.m. when his dash cam captured the animal. The incident happened on Navajo Road near the Mission Trails Golf Course and Cowles Mountain trailhead. The possible mountain lion was as wide as his car, Johanning told 10News.Johanning has lived or worked in San Carlos since 1997 and said he had never seen a mountain lion in the area.Wildlife Research Institute researcher David Bittner saw Johanning’s video and confirmed it was likely a mountain lion.  Bittner is leading a project that has set up cameras throughout the county looking for mountain lions.  He says a sighting in San Carlos is rare.Bittner says he may be a juvenile striking out on his own hunting for deer. "Usually they go back home after a few days," said Bittner.  966
