SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Starting Wednesday, Southwest Airlines is providing daily, nonstop service from San Diego International Airport to Honolulu. The inaugural flight departed at 8 a.m. from San Diego to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Hawaii."We've been anticipating this route for many months and welcome Southwest's new daily service to Honolulu," San Diego County Regional Airport Authority President and CEO Kimberly Becker said."There has always been high demand for leisure travel to both San Diego and Honolulu and, with a military presence in each city, a desire to visit friends and family," she said. "We appreciate Southwest's continued investment in our city as they add Hawaii to their expanding list of nonstop markets from San Diego."Though Wednesday marked Southwest's first daily flight from San Diego to Honolulu, Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines also offer service from the airport to Honolulu. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, passengers flying to Hawaii were advised to review the state's travel policy, which includes pre-travel testing program, the Mandatory State of Hawaii Travel and Health Form, and temperature screening upon arrival. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The City of San Diego's Development Services Department announced Tuesday that it will begin accepting permit-ready building plans for the construction of companion units attached to existing single- and multi-family properties.Homeowners can apply for a permit to build one of the units, also called casitas or granny flats, by contacting the Development Services Department. In recent months, the city has sought to make granny flat construction more efficient by making changes like waiving fees and increasing maximum unit size from 700 square feet to 1,200, among other things.RELATED:San Diego homeowners creating rentals by converting garages into apartmentsCity may weigh 'vacancy tax' targeting empty homesWhat does it take to retire at 40?"We're doing everything we can to make it easier and cheaper to build housing here in San Diego," Mayor Kevin Faulconer said. "Granny flats are exploding in popularity thanks to our housing reforms and now residents can build them for less with pre-approved plans that will ensure the permitting process is quick and efficient."The streamlining of granny flat regulations has caused applications for their construction to increase nearly 2,500% since 2016, when the city received 19 applications. Through October, the city has received more than 480 applications this year.To apply, homeowners must ensure their building plan meets the city's submittal guidelines and make an appointment with DSD by calling 619-446-5300 to allow city officials to review the plan. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The city of Santee called on residents today to help it develop a brand to market the city to tourists, businesses and potential residents.Santee recently partnered with North Star Destination Strategies to develop a marketing brand for the city. To that end, the marketing agency launched an online survey for Santee residents to give feedback on the city's strengths, weaknesses and challenges. Responses to the survey are anonymous, according to North Star Destination Strategies."We have partnered with more than 250 communities across North American and I can't emphasize enough the importance of insights gleaned from community members," North Star Founder Don McEachern said.Residents can access the survey at the city's website and submit it electronically. The survey is also available in physical form at Santee City Hall. The surveys must be submitted by Sept. 2 to be considered."It is important for us to celebrate what we love about our community and share it with others," Santee Mayor John Minto said. "The future is bright in Santee; I sure hope you can see it because I can." 1119

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors today unanimously approved spending million in federal pandemic-related funding to help child care providers, testing in schools and meals for senior citizens. The board directed million to child care providers, who have been struggling to stay afloat since March, in the form of grants. The county will also spend .8 million on senior food programs -- including an expanded Great Plates program that involves prepared meals delivered to the elderly -- while also supporting participating restaurants. The board voted to spend million to support the county Department of Public Health's testing, tracing and treatment strategy dedicated for kindergarten through 12th-grade schools.Last month, the board directed the county's chief administrative officer to make recommendations on how to spend the money. To implement the child care grants, CAO Helen Robbins-Meyer will negotiate agreements with The San Diego Foundation, the YMCA of San Diego County and Child Development Associates, Inc.Supervisor Jim Desmond said while he has been critical of Great Plates program, based on the costs per meal, he understands it helps restaurants while also helping shut-in seniors who may not have any social interaction otherwise.Desmond added that if there's money left over from the program or school testing, it should go towards area food banks. In related actions following an update on county COVID-19 prevention efforts, the board approved Desmond's motion for a waiver to the school- closures mandate. The board also approved a separate motion allowing county enforcement of businesses -- in terms of complying with reopening requirements -- based on Phase 2 mandates. 1741

SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- San Diego lifeguards and firefighters Sunday rescued a surfer who suffered a medical emergency while in the water in the Bird Rock area, authorities said.At 12:36 p.m., lifeguards and firefighters from the San Diego Fire- Rescue Department responded to the cliffs near Calumet Park about a surfer experiencing an unknown medical emergency, Lt. Andy Lerum of Lifeguard Services said. The man in his 60s experienced a possible heart-related ailment or seizure, but rescuers were not sure of the exact nature of his medical emergency, Lerum said. The man swam to the beach, where he collapsed and lifeguards began tending to him, the lieutenant said. He was taken by stretcher about 30 yards to the bottom of the cliff.Firefighters used the department's Rescue 44 truck, equipped with a crane, to lift the surfer from the beach to the top of the cliff, Lerum said. An ambulance then took the man to a La Jolla hospital for evaluation. He was reportedly in stable condition. 995
