CHICAGO, Ill. – Approximately 7 million Americans live with the movement disorder known as essential tremor. Another 1 million have Parkinson’s. But a new incision-less treatment that focuses ultrasound beams onto the brain is providing new hope to patients who suffer from movement disorders.Gary Sindelar, 75, began experiencing tremors in his hands and legs while in his early 60s.“They were kind of scary because I didn't know what it was. I didn't know why my hands were jumping and my fingers were moving, and I didn't want them to,” said Sindelar.The tremors made everyday activities, like eating, increasingly difficult.“I would cut, and I would cut and all of a sudden my hand would jump in and would throw the food right off the plate,” he said. Essential tremor is a neurological disorder that causes involuntary and rhythmic shaking. It can affect almost any part of the body, but the trembling most often occurs in hands, making simple tasks, like drinking water from a glass or tying shoelaces, difficult.“I didn't like you have to explain to my grandchildren all the time. ‘What's the matter with grandpa?’”After years of living with the condition, Sindelar’s doctors at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago determined he was a candidate for a new, non-surgical procedure.“There are some patients who are old or older and the surgical risk is high,” said Dr. Sepehr Sani, associate professor of neurosurgery at Rush University Medical Center. “And so, they choose to accept and a very poor quality of life with tremors.”Neurosurgeons used a mouse and a computer instead of a scalpel. More than 1,000 ultrasound waves coalesce to burn lesions in the brain and stop the tremors. The neurosurgeon is guided by real-time hi-resolution MR imaging.“We can actually see with our own eyes what's happening inside the brain as this is occurring and that allows us to control exactly where and how much of the lesion we make,” said Sani.The innovative treatment is now covered by Medicare in all 50 states.Sani says the new incision-less outpatient procedure could be a revolution in treatment.“Now the patients literally walk into an MRI machine and get the treatment and they can leave within about an hour, hour and a half.”Six weeks after undergoing the procedure, Sindelar’s left hand and leg are more still than they’ve been in more than a decade.“This side, I can hold it steady,” he said.Regaining that steadiness, he says has been life-altering.“I would have said to you that I think I probably had 10 years of life,” said Sindelar. “And I could have 50 years left now.”It’s an emotional reality that could provide hope to countless others. 2667

(KGTV) - The family of an 18-year-old man shot and killed in Carlsbad last July says they’re upset with the sentence handed down for the man who supplied the gun in the shooting.Connor Mangseth is described by family as someone who lived life to the fullest, inspiring those around him to do the same. His mother said he would befriend anyone, no matter their background, and that’s what led to his death this year. On July 23, Connor went to the home of a friend and 19-year-old Gerardo Gonzales, another friend, was also present. Gonzalez was already facing felony charges for another crime and was out on bail.RELATED: Teen girl, young man arrested in Carlsbad shooting deathGerardo had a gun, which he gave to a 16-year-old female who was also with them. She said she thought it was empty when she pulled the trigger, but there was a bullet inside, which struck and killed Connor. Connor’s sister said it’s what happened next that deserves justice.“The worst part is the things that happened after that. It was that Gerardo Gonzales and this minor left to go hide the gun, they created a false story involving two other gunman and they spent 20 minutes doing this instead of anyone calling 911 or getting help,” said Sabrina Mangseth.Gerardo was charged with Accessory After the Fact and Child Endangerment. The Mangseth family said they are angry at the court system for how they handled these charges. Connor’s mother, Maureen, said they got silence from the District Attorney’s office, then she got a call saying Gerardo had taken a plea deal, something she was not told about ahead of time. She said she feels like the prosecutor was trying to rush the case rather than find justice, adding that to her knowledge, investigators have not completed their investigation and have more evidence to review.Sabrina started an online petition to bring awareness to the lack of communication during the case, gathering more than 6,000 signatures. A description in the petition describes Connor’s passion for life and the family’s desire for the court to take back the plea deal and wait to make any decisions until all evidence has been gathered.Ultimately, a second prosecutor was brought in to handle the case, but the guilty plea remained. Wednesday, Gerardo was sentenced to probation and up to one year in jail. Maureen said it doesn’t look likely that he’ll serve jail time. Sabrina did add that the second prosecutor did a better job of communicating with their family.“Gerardo Gonzales himself, in the trial, said Connor was my best friend and for him to do that to his best friend, I can’t even imagine what he would do to a stranger, someone else,” said Sabrina, worried about the lack of punishment for Gerardo.When asked for a response to the sentencing and plea deal, a spokesperson for the District Attorney’s office said: “This is obviously a tragic case and we have been in very close contact with the victim's family in recent weeks as we continue to seek justice for their loss. Two defendants were charged in connection with this murder. The defendant who is not the actual killer pleaded guilty to both counts he was charged with, including Accessory After the Fact and Child Endangerment, with an agreement from the People that there would be no opposition to a local jail sentence. Joe Heath queries his social studies class at Aviara Oaks Middle School in Carlsbad.Heath has been teaching for more than 30 years, and this day has his 7th graders focused on pre-20th century Japanese culture."Most of the marriages were actually arranged," Heath explains to one student. "Your Mom or your Dad choosing your spouse. How would you feel about that?" For Coach Heath, as his students like to call him, Social Studies is about connecting and empathizing with people who lived through a different time and culture - not simply memorizing abstract names and dates. "I don't take that approach." said Heath, "In large part because I don't remember those names or those dates. I'm really good with remembering concepts and how people dealt with difficulties historically....and those same difficulties we face today.""It's not just absorbing facts where you write it down and then say it later," said student Rylan Hoffius. CARMEL VALLEY (KGTV) - Schools are urging parents to learn more about the hit Netflix show '13 Reasons Why' so they can have a conversation with their kids.The first season of the show came out in March of 2017, and immediately after searches on Google relating to suicide skyrocketed.Particularly, "how to commit suicide" up?26%, "suicide prevention" rose 23% and "suicide hotline number" was up 21% according to a research paper published in JAMA International Medicine and CNN.At Carmel Valley Middle School, they faced that very serious issue personally. Three 7th graders, Madison, Lauren and Ximena saw their friend, who moved to LA, posting her pain on social media. She was cutting."She was posting a lot of videos on social media holding up an exact-o-knife and talking about all this," Madison said."I found out first and texted both of them and said we have to do something about it," Ximena said it was on her Snapchat story.Madison said they were taught in P.E. that this kind of act is a plea for help. They went to their counselor, Karen Infantino who went the extra step, reaching out to a counselor at the friend's new school, ensuring she got the help she needed."And was able to reach out and make sure that she was in a good place but it’s also really important for me to make sure that any student that comes to me feels listened to and acknowledged," Infantino said.The sentiment of being heard could've changed the entire plot of '13 Reasons Why.'The main character of the dramatic series reveals the reasons she committed suicide.
