Right now, doctors at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are trying to figure out whether people who vape are at a higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19.Currently, vapers and smokers are not in the high-risk category. Doctors say coronavirus is a respiratory disease, which affects the lungs. People who vape or smoke already have weaker lungs. Last year, we saw many teens go to the hospital with lung illnesses associated with vaping.Dr. David Beuther, Chief Medical Information Officer at National Jewish Health says while vapers and smokers are at a greater risk, the risk of developing more severe complications is even greater. “I’d be more worried about you more than normal, but I think anybody that vapes, that inhales anything toxic into their lungs, is putting their lungs at risk, because it probably alters the immune system,” said Dr. Beuther. “It probably causes some irritation. It probably reduces your own lung’s ability to defend itself against this virus.Vaping may also contribute to more infections when people are using the device and exhaling.Dr. Beuther says while we try to stay six feet away from people, someone vaping may blow their cloud further than that and that could increase the risk of spreading the virus.Dr. Beuther encourages people to take this virus seriously and to consider quitting smoking. 1371

Right now, we all need to be focused on fighting the virus, not each other. I’m willing to work with anyone as long as we get the personal protective equipment we need for the people of Michigan. https://t.co/sVZry3weUw— Governor Gretchen Whitmer (@GovWhitmer) March 27, 2020 288

Severe weather plagued several states throughout the Midwest over the weekend, killing one person and damaging at least one building.Vickie Darnel, 64, died from drowning Sunday after she drove into a flooded creek crossing in Le Flore County, Oklahoma, according to Lt. Kera Philippi, spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.Philippi says that Darnel's vehicle was swept off the roadway around 4:30 a.m. Sunday near the border of Arkansas. The area saw a number of flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings from the National Weather Service over the weekend. The National Weather Service is sending an assessment team to South Bend, Indiana, after a tornado touched down in the area and destroyed at least one building. The building was the site of Growing Kids daycare facility, according to Aaron Miller, dispatch supervisor for St. Joseph County Public Safety Communication Center.Miller told CNN that the building suffered extensive damage and there were several reports of trees down throughout St. Joseph County.Missouri State Highway Patrol along with the Missouri Department of Conservation and several local agencies performed multiple water rescues Sunday for people whose vehicles were in the water. They also rescued people who were stranded by high water due to heavy rainfall, according to the Missouri Department of Public Safety.A subdivision in Neosho, Missouri, and parts of Roaring River State Park had to be evacuated, although it was unclear how many people had to leave, the Missouri Department of Public Safety said. The band of weather that caused all of this chaos is called a frontal boundary and it acts as a cold front but doesn't actually have any cold air behind it.The mixture of the boundary layer is slightly cooler dry air and hot humid air which can cause intense storms. 1821

Some employees, including 1.2 million middle class workers, could be overtime eligible starting in January under a new policy by the Trump administration. According to the Department of Labor, executive, administrative, or professional employees who make less than 4 a week (,568 a year) will now be eligible for time-and-a-half pay for work performed beyond 40 hours in a week. That is an increase from 5 a week (,660 a year). While the Department of Labor says the new rule is the first time the threshold for overtime eligibility has increased in 15 years, the Obama administration attempted to increase the overtime threshold ,476 a year. The rule, which had the opposition of then candidate Donald Trump, was shot down by the courts after Obama left office. Obama's policy was not defended in federal court by the Trump administration. The policy also increases the threshold for workers known as "highly compensated employees." The threshold increased from 0,000 to 7,432 per year. Those who are considered highly compensated employees are exempt from overtime pay. The Labor Department said it expects nearly 1.3 million workers will be eligible for overtime who currently aren't eligible. Of the 1.3 million workers, 100,000 will become overtime eligible after the highly compensated employee threshold increases."For the first time in over 15 years, America's workers will have an update to overtime regulations that will put overtime pay into the pockets of more than a million working Americans," Acting U.S. Secretary of Labor Patrick Pizzella said. "This rule brings a commonsense approach that offers consistency and certainty for employers as well as clarity and prosperity for American workers." 1744
