LANZHOU, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang urged the restoration of people's livelihood in the quake-hit regions during his visit in northwestern Gansu Province between Jan. 15 and Jan. 17.     Some areas of Gansu were shattered by the devastating May 12 earthquake centered in Wenchuan of neighboring Sichuan Province last year. "You can go to the interior region if it is hard to find a job in the coastal area; you can shift to work in the service sector as job opportunities are limited in the industrial sector; you can also start your own business at your hometown without going outside."     Li urged governments and departments concerned to provide more training and guidance to help rural workers get a job and guarantee a stable increase in employment.

BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Diplomats of China and the United States on Friday met in Beijing to discuss issues concerning central and south Asia.     China's Vice Foreign Minister Li Hui and Assistant Foreign Minister Hu Zhengyue respectively held consultations with U.S. Assistant Secretary for South Asian Affairs Richard Boucher, according to a statement released by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.     The consultations went on under the framework of China-U.S. Strategic Dialogue, which was initiated in 2005.     Both sides introduced their views and policy objectives on central and south Asia and pledged to continue consultations and coordination as a way of promoting peace, stability and development in those regions.

BEIJING, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here Thursday with the foreign guests attending the 2008 Annual General Meeting of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED). During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on how China could properly handle the relation between stable, fast economic growth and environmental protection, and achieve sustainable development, against the backdrop of the aggravating global financial crisis and the downturn of global growth. TAIPEI, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- The panda pair given by the Chinese mainland to Taiwan made their debut at the Taipei Zoo Saturday evening, meeting a select group of visitors including Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou and Kuomintang Honorary Chairman Lien Chan.     "It's an honor for Taiwan to breed the two pandas, as there are only about 1,600 pandas in the world," said Ma, at the ceremony to inaugurate the new enclosure for the pandas.     About 500 orphans and children from poor families were invited by the city government to be the first visitors to the panda pair.     "It's a time for family reunions at Spring Festival, but some children have lost their families and others cannot afford to go to the zoo. To accommodate the crowds, the zoo will extend business hours until 18:00 p.m. during the Spring Festival holidays.     The city government estimates the pandas will attract about 6 million visitors to the zoo annually, double the current number.     The mainland announced in May 2005 it would donate two giant pandas to Taiwan. WUHAN, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter said Wednesday he believes the incoming administration of President-elect Barack Obama will expand common interests of the United States and China.     Carter, 84, flew to central China's Hubei Province after attending a series of events in Beijing to mark the 30th anniversary of China-U.S. diplomatic ties.
