SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sheriff's deputies in East County arrested 36 people today in a warrant sweep, clearing 44 misdemeanor warrants and two felony warrants.The sweep included the cities and unincorporated areas of Lemon Grove, Spring Valley, Jamul, El Cajon, La Mesa and Rancho San Diego.The Sheriff's Department's Court Services Bureau-Field Division conducted the search and arrest of people with outstanding warrants regardless of the charge or bail amount.The department encouraged people who have outstanding warrants to turn themselves in between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at any sheriff's court facilities. 633

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Recent rainfall has led to an influx of seabirds washing ashore and becoming beached along San Diego's coast, the San Diego Humane Society said Friday.The organization's Project Wildlife program, which focuses on animal rehabilitation and conservation, has recently cared for multiple seabirds, including loons, western grebes and a blue-footed booby who became beached during periods of high surf and stormy weather.Seabird diets are also affected by rainfall as vacillating ocean temperatures cause their food sources to dive deeper than normal. Consequently, the birds are often too weak to get past strong coastal waves into the open ocean. Humane Society animal care staff recently transferred their rescued birds to SeaWorld for further rehabilitative care.Residents are advised to contact a lifeguard, the Humane Society's Humane Law Enforcement division at 619-299-7012, ext. 1, or SeaWorld at 800-541- 7325 if they see a beached or struggling seabird. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The remains of a 33-year-old Marine killed last week along with three fellow Miramar-based servicemen in a helicopter crash in Imperial County will arrive in San Diego Saturday in preparation for funeral services.Gunnery Sgt. Derik R. Holley of Dayton, Ohio, and his crew mates were taking part in training exercises near El Centro when the CH-53E Super Stallion they were aboard went down for unknown reasons on the afternoon of April 3. The cause of the crash is under investigation.Holley's body will arrive at San Diego International Airport late Saturday afternoon, then be transported via a military procession to a Mountain View- area mortuary, according to Laura Herzog, executive director of Honoring Our Fallen, a support group for families of military casualties.Also killed in the accident were Lance Cpl. Taylor J. Conrad of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; 1st Lt. Samuel D. Phillips of Pinehurst, North Carolina; and Capt. Samuel A. Schultz of Huntington Valley, Pennsylvania.The personnel, with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 465, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, had flown to the remote desert area from Strategic Expeditionary Landing Field at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms to practice making landings in unimproved terrain, according to USMC officials.Holley enlisted in the Marines in November 2003 and deployed to Iraq twice in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, to Japan as part of the Unit Deployment Program and with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit.During his service, he received a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Air Medal-Strike/Flight, and Navy and Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal.A ceremonial memorial service for Holley is scheduled for Tuesday at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Herzog said. 1842

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Temperatures throughout San Diego County will warm slightly each day leading up to the arrival of a heat wave for Labor Day weekend, according to the National Weather Service.The agency issued an excessive heat watch that will be in effect from Friday morning through Monday evening in the western valleys, the mountains and the deserts. An excessive heat watch will also be in effect from Saturday morning through Monday evening in coastal areas.High pressure will strengthen over California throughout the week and begin ushering in the sweltering conditions on Friday, forecasters said.
