The maritime authority is now making efforts to avoid congestion.The ship locks are supposed to open after water flowing into the reservoir falls to 45,000 cubic meters per second.Water flowing into the reservoir of the dam reached 56,000 cubic meters per second at 2 p.m., the highest since the flood earlier peaked at 70,000 cubic meters per second on July 20, the Yangtze River Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said in a statement.The water flow fell to 53,000 cubic meters per second at 8 p.m.It said the dam took the edge off the fierce flow by holding back about 31,000 cubic meters of flood water per second and discharging the rest.The water level in the dam was 154.3 meters at 8 p.m., an increase of more than 4 meters in 24 hours and well above the 145-meter flood alarm level, the statement said.

BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Urban residents who expect home prices to fall in first-tier Chinese cities in the second quarter outnumber those who anticipate further price hikes, according to a report by the China Economic Monitoring and Analysis Center released here Thursday.About 41 percent of those surveyed in the second quarter expected house prices to fall in popular first-tier cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen -- 18 percentage points higher than the proportion in the first quarter, according to the center which is under the National Bureau of Statistics.Meanwhile, only 36 percent of those surveyed in the second quarter anticipated house prices to continue to rise in those first-tier cities -- 24 basis points lower than the first quarter.In the second quarter, more people are expecting house prices to decline in cities at various levels, even as the proportions vary in different cities, according to the report.About 30 percent of consumers in provincial capital cities anticipated home prices to weaken in the second quarter, compared with 15 percent in the first quarter.In other small- and medium-sized cities, 28 percent of consumers surveyed foresaw house price falling in the future, up more than 11 basis points from the first quarter."The result show government measures to tighten the housing market since mid April have begun to have an effect on urban consumers' expectations," said Pan Jiancheng, deputy director of the China Economic Monitoring and Analysis Center.In spite of the rising proportions, the number of those who anticipated house price declines, however, still fell short of those who expected further price hikes in cities, except for consumers in the first-tier cities, according to the report.Housing prices in major Chinese cities rose 10.3 percent year on year in July, compared with 11.4 percent growth in June, according to NBS data released Tuesday.Property prices in 70 large and medium-sized cities grew 12.4 percent in May and 12.8 percent in April, the highest growth rate since July 2005 when the government started publishing the data.

BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese military forces are rushing to prevent disease in mudslide-devastated Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province as high temperatures hit the area where at least 1,156 people were dead.While giving medical treatment to 12,000 local residents, soldiers have also sterilized an area of 128,000 square meters in the disaster-hit county, Wang Wenjie, a senior officer with the Lanzhou Military Area Command of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), said Friday.On Thursday, the Ministry of Health warned of disease-prevention challenges in Zhouqu, as dead bodies and dead animals entombed in the mud may easily decay in the hot weather.Although wells have been dug up to ensure water supply, the ministry said sterilization work is difficult as the water may be contaminated during transportation and storage.In order to ensure rescuers' health, more disinfectant and anti-sunstroke medicine has been dispatched to Zhouqu along with fresh clothing.While more equipment is en route to Zhouqu, Wang said more epidemic prevention workers are ready to go to Zhouqu if needed.Tuo Chengxiang, a senior officer with the Chinese People's Armed Police Force, said the main roads into the township are covered in sludge, hampering vehicular access to the area.A total of 6,281 soldiers and armed policemen are participating in the rescue and relief work in Zhouqu. URUMQI, June 28 (Xinhua) -- China sent two chartered aircraft carrying 26 tonnes of new relief materials to Kyrgyzstan early Monday to help refugees who suffered shortages of supplies after violent ethnic clashes this month.The two China Southern Airlines Boeing 757 cargo aircraft brought the materials to the southern Kyrgyzstan city of Osh from Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, a spokesman with the carrier's Xinjiang Branch said.The aid materials worth 3 million yuan (440,000 U.S. dollars) include rice, oil, biscuits, black tea, milk powder, blankets, clothes, stationary and sanitary materials, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang in a press release."China hopes the aid will help Kyrgyz authorities to resettle the refugees," Qin said.China Southern Airlines, one of the country's leading carriers, has been heavily involved in the evacuation of Chinese nationals and transportation of relief supplies after clashes broke out between Kyrgyz and ethnic Uzbeks in Osh in mid-June.The clashes later spread to the region of Jalalabad, leaving 210 people dead and 2,100 injured.Since June 15, China has sent charter planes to ship altogether 80 tonnes of relief supplies, worth 11 million yuan, to Kyrgyzstan and neighboring Uzbekistan which was flooded with Kyrgyz refugees after the clashes, according to China Southern Airlines.
