(KGTV) — A local mother said her son and another teenager were attacked during a Black Lives Matter protest in Ramona.Heidi, who wanted to use only her first name, said her son Miguel had been peacefully protesting during the first week of June. Miguel recently graduated from high school. “I feel like our new generation is going to change something in the future,” he said.During the protest on June 5 in Ramona, he and his mother said men attacked him and his friend. She said the attack was unprovoked. Miguel said he moved his friend out of the way and that’s when the same man attacked him.“He hits me, I try to grab him so he won’t go away,” Miguel said. “Next thing… I get hit in the back. I was unconscious after that.”Heidi said the second hit came from a different man. She was at home when the Sheriff’s Department called her. “As a mother, it was very heartbreaking,” Heidi said.This is the second attack on protesters caught on camera that ABC 10News has covered recently. On June 7 in Imperial Beach, a man sucker-punched Marcus Boyd, a local businessman.Heidi said Miguel went to Pomerado Hospital with a concussion, sprained neck, and jaw. She is disappointed with where the Sheriff’s investigation stands. “Our officer was very, very nice. Are they doing all we think they should do? No.” Heidi said.Miguel plans to go to EMT school and eventually become a law enforcement officer. He said despite being attacked, he would still protest for causes he believes in.“I don't want my son to get hurt. but that being said, I'm not raising a man that's going to be afraid to voice his freedom of speech and liberty,” Heidi said.A Sheriff’s spokesperson told ABC 10News: “Deputies from the Ramona Sheriff’s Substation took a report about this incident. Researchers from Florida Atlantic University released a video on Tuesday that shows how droplets disperse into the air from a person’s mouth.The researchers used different kinds of masks to analyze the disbursement of the droplets. The researchers also showed that without a mask, six feet of distance might not be enough to avoid infection.The FAU team tested a single-layer bandana-style covering, a homemade mask that was stitched using two-layers of cotton quilting fabric consisting of 70 threads per inch, and a non-sterile cone-style mask that is available in most pharmacies. The team used a mannequin, Laser lights and synthetic fog to help visualize the spread of the droplet from a cough..The researchers said that stitched quilted cotton masks worked the best in the simulation, with droplets from emulated coughs traveling just 2.5 inches from the mask. By comparison, without a mask, the droplets moved more than 8 feet, with some droplets traveling up to 12 feet during a heavy cough. The researchers also noted that the droplets remained suspended in midair for up to three minutes in the simulated environment.“We found that although the unobstructed turbulent jets were observed to travel up to 12 feet, a large majority of the ejected droplets fell to the ground by this point,” said Dhanak. “Importantly, both the number and concentration of the droplets will decrease with increasing distance, which is the fundamental rationale behind social-distancing.”FAU said that droplets from a cough traveled 3 feet, 7 inches from a bandana; 1 foot, 3 inches from a folded handkerchief; and 8 inches from a cone-style mask.“Preliminary results from our experiment reveal that significant concentrations of small particles from a turbulent jet such as from a heavy cough/sneeze can linger in still air for more than one minute. It only took the particles a couple of seconds to travel 3 feet; in about 12 seconds it reached 6 feet and in about 41 seconds it reached around 9 feet,” said Siddhartha Verma, an assistant professor in FAU’s Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering.Last week, the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation projected that 33,000 American lives would be saved between now and October 1 by near universal wearing of masks.Last month, a study in the Lancet found that the use of masks and respirators by those infected with the virus reduced the risk of spreading the infection by 85%. The authors analyzed data that showed that N95 respirators in healthcare settings were up to 96% effective. Everyone is searching for ways to help not just the families and firefighters, but the animals deprived of their homes. A woman from the tiny town of Rainbow is hoping her handiwork will help the Australian wildlife in a big way.Symphony Ariosta, 31, is a true animal lover. "I love animals. If I could, I would run a rescue myself," Ariosta said. Scientists at the University of Sydney estimate at least one billion animals have been killed in the months-long wildfires. Seeing the images of the animals and the flames on the news reminded Ariosta of the tragedy her family experienced in the 2007 Rice Canyon Fire in Fallbrook. "It's heartbreaking," Ariosta said. "I feel, no matter where in the world you are, if you can help, why not?"She wondered what she could do without breaking the bank. She searched online and found "Rescue Craft Co," a group dedicated to handicrafts."There's wildlife pouches, there are bat wraps, there are little marsupial bags, hanging pouches," Ariosta explained. Research by the RAND Corporation American Life Panel found that Americans over the age of 30 have been drinking more alcohol in 2020 than they did a year ago.The journal Jama Network Open published the results Tuesday.Researchers surveyed more than 1,500 people between the ages of 30 and 80 in 2019 and 2020.
