BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- As a 6.1-magnitude aftershock hit southwest China's Sichuan Province, the country's quake relief headquarters held its 24th meeting on reconstruction here on Tuesday, reiterating its dual focuses: livelihoods and the environment.     At the meeting presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao, the headquarters urged giving priority to the basic needs of the survivors of the May 12 earthquake in Sichuan Province. It also promised to improve the local environment step by step, ensuring "fast and sound" reconstruction. On Friday afternoon, an aftershock of the same magnitude hit Pingwu and Beichuan counties in Sichuan, injuring 231 people.

BEIJING, May 30 (Xinhua) -- China and Vietnam will complete erecting markers along their land border by year end, a visiting Vietnamese leader said here on Friday.     In talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao, Nong Duc Manh, Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee general secretary, reaffirmed efforts to meet this deadline set in 1999. China and Vietnam signed a treaty in December that year delineating their 1,350 kilometers of frontier. They officially started to plant land markers in 2002.     The two countries finished their latest round of talks on land border demarcation in Beijing last week, vowing to speed up the work. They hailed the rapid growth of bilateral ties in recent years, citing Sino-Vietnam cooperation in trade, rule of country, regional and international issues, as well as problems left over from history.     Hu proposed China and Vietnam seek stronger ties in culture, education, science and technology, agriculture and youth exchange.     Manh echoed Hu's view, reiterating his country's efforts to work more closely with China in various fields.     Hu called for an early blueprint outlining a five-year trade cooperation between the two countries.     In response, Manh encouraged Chinese businessmen to invest in big projects in Vietnam and help his country develop in a sustainable manner.     Hu suggested a proper solution to existing issues between the countries on the basis of friendly consultation and mutual benefit.     Manh shared Hu's view and said the two countries should communicate promptly about their concerns.     They also exchanged views on party building and international issues.     After the talk, Hu and Manh witnessed the signing of several bilateral deals on protection and quarantine of animals and plants, as well as in other fields.     During Manh's four-day tour, he will also visit the east Jiangsu Province.

FUZHOU, July 27 (Xinhua) -- A total of 274,300 people had been evacuated by Sunday afternoon in southeast China's Fujian Province as a strong typhoon was approaching, said the provincial flood control headquarters.     About 52,301 fishing boats had also returned to harbor as of 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Disaster relief personnel had been helping people on fishing vessels get on shore, said Yang Zhiying, head of the flood control headquarters in Fujian.     Typhoon Fung Wong, the eighth tropical storm of this year, turned into a strong typhoon at 8:00 p.m. Its eye was monitored at the sea about 210 kilometers to the east of Taitung County in Taiwan, according to the provincial observatory.     It moved westward and was forecast to land Taiwan on Sunday night or Monday morning. BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Millions of Chinese have used this year's mid-Autumn Festival, which fell on Sunday, to get together with family and loved ones.     This year the Chinese government made the festival a three-day national holiday for the first time.     Railways and buses from Chengdu, capital in southwest China's Sichuan Province, carried 180,000 people to quake-battered cities in the province on the first day of the holiday on Saturday, according to the transport authority.     "The holiday gave us a break from work to go back home to see my parents in Shifang City, after it was hit by the earthquake in May," said a man surnamed Li, while waiting in a crowded bus terminal in Chengdu.     Radio broadcast at the terminal reported travel was difficult, because of repairs on the road or damage from the earthquake. Home-going passengers, many holding packages of mooncakes, stood waiting.     Li said the passengers shared a common understanding that the festival's tradition of family values made the trip home more meaningful, and people with painful memories of the disasters cherished such chance.     Elsewhere in the country, people preferred to share the holiday feeling at home or on short family trips to tourist spots, instead of going far for travel, according to travel agencies.     Leading Chinese travel services like China Travel Service and CCT Travel reported slack booking for Mid-Autumn travels.     A staffer at the CCT Travel's office in scenic Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southwest China said that travel for the week-long National Day holiday in Oct. was booked up.
