SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Navy veteran Erick Dorsey is the proud new owner of a 2015 Toyota Tacoma, a vehicle once totaled and headed for the salvage yard.The donation is part of the National Auto Body Council's Recycled Rides program - insurers, collision repairers, paint suppliers, parts vendors, and others collaborate to repair and donate vehicles to deserving individuals throughout the country.After leaving the service in 2010, transitioning and finding employment as a civilian was challenging for Dorsey. He relied on his previous skill-set as a welder to make ends meet, a career that nearly cost him his eyesight from being in the trade for over 20 years.Dorsey's currently a full-time student at Cuyamaca College, pursuing environmental science. He's also working as a Veteran Resource Center representative through the VA Work Study program. While he transitions to a new career with limited income, Dorsey relies on public transportation and friends to juggle work and school schedules. Allstate Insurance donated the car and technicians at Caliber Collision in Vista made it like new, volunteering personal time to restore the vehicle.Dorsey was nominated by Support the Enlisted Project (STEP), a San Diego-based nonprofit that supports military service members and their families.STEP's mission is to build financial self-sufficiency among junior active duty enlisted service members and recently discharged enlisted Veterans and their families.Over 1,000 vehicles have been donated through the Recycled Rides program since its inception in 2007. 1565

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police released a sketch Thursday depicting the suspect of a sexual assault at Black's Beach near La Jolla Shores this week.San Diego Police say the female victim was jogging on the beach Wednesday when she was sexually assaulted. The suspect slapped the woman's buttocks twice and grabbed her in the genital area before she broke free and called for help.Officers responded by did not find the man. The suspect is described as a Black man between 30 and 40 years old, with short to no hair and an earring in one ear. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after they say four teenagers were beaten, stabbed and robbed near a City Heights elementary school Saturday night.Police say the four teens were in a skate park near Cherokee Point Elementary School on the 3900 block of Landis Street when they were approached by a group of men.According to police, the man tried to start an argument, so then teens ran to a pedestrian bridge where another group of men was waiting for them.Police say the approximately 15 men punched and kicked all four victims and stole their cell phones and wallets.One of the victims was stabbed in the elbow and another was cut on the finger.One of the victims was taken to the hospital for his injuries, police say. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Parents and students are concerned after someone found a bullet in a Point Loma High School restroom. The incident was reported on Monday and while students say there was a lack of communication from school staff, word traveled fast on campus. The school says police are now investigating. "We never heard anything over the intercom or anything," says senior Javan Hedrick. "In my 4th period class, it came up out of nowhere. Everyone was talking about some bullet found in the boys bathroom." Around noon, parents received an email sent from the school's principal, that says in part: "At Point Loma, our first priority is to provide a safe and secure learning environment for our students. As such, I wanted to make you aware of an incident that occurred this morning. School Police investigated a report of a bullet found on the floor of the boys restroom. After an investigation, it was determined there was no threat."Some parents pulled their kids out of class and aren't sure when they'll send them back. "I walked into the office, it was a crazy amount of kids trying to go home," says Hedrick. Students say they would have felt a little better if school staff talked to them about the incident. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person was injured late Friday after a stabbing near Fox Canyon in eastern San Diego.A 25-year-old man was with two other people in the 4900 block of Auburn Dr. just after 10 p.m. when an unknown suspect walked up to the group and got in an argument with the victim, San Diego Police said.The argument escalated, ending with the suspect stabbing the victim multiple times in the left side of his body, police said.
