Seattle police have moved in to break up the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest (CHOP) after Mayor Jenny Durkan issued an executive order early Wednesday morning declaring the gathering illegal.According to the Seattle Times and KOMO-TV, about a dozen protesters were arrested Wednesday morning as police ordered those present to leave the area.Demonstrators have occupied the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle for about three weeks. The protesters moved in earlier this month after police abandoned the department's East Precinct — which is located in the neighborhood — over fears of riots.While the occupation was largely peaceful for several weeks, the area has seen four shootings since June 20, some of them deadly.The protests began in the wake of the death of George Floyd, and were part of a nationwide protest movement against systemic racism and police brutality.Last month, CHOP leadership released a list of demands calling for the abolishment of the Seattle Police Department, a retrial for all people of color serving prison sentences for violent crime and the de-gentrification of the city, among other demands. 1138

(KGTV) - An abandoned church in San Ysidro will become the site of 10 new affordable housing units, as well as a cultural center.The non-profit group Casa Familiar is spearheading the project, called "Living Rooms at the Border.""What we want to do is build a culture corridor from SY Blvd through the alley, all the way to the Beyer Trolley Station," says Community Development Director David Flores.The church was built in 1927 and is known in the neighborhood as "El Salon." Casa Familiar bought the property in 2000 and has worked to develop it since then.The proposed 14,000 square foot development will turn it into a cultural arts center. Around it, Casa Familiar will build 10 units of affordable housing, a community garden and patio, office space for support services and programs, and walkways connecting the alleys to main streets.Flores says it will connect the community to its past and future."There's history. There's richness. There are stories that families love sharing about San Ysidro and growing up here. It's going to be a space that will bring back a lot of those memories."As part of the plan, the exterior of the church will stay in place. So will much of the filaments inside."People would tell us stories about coming here for Sunday services, or doing their first communion, even weddings, people get married here," says Flores. "It's a really special, cool place, where we thought, why demolish everything. This is a really important community icon that we can restore."The project is the latest effort to revitalize the neighborhood. A new park and playground are just a half block away from the church, and plans are underway to build a new San Ysidro library two blocks away.The new homes will vary in size. There will be three one-bedroom units, three two-bedroom units and four three-bedroom units."This is not a lot of units, it's 10 units," says Flores. "But the whole idea behind this project is to build in the service, support programs that families need.""Living Rooms at the Border" will cost around 8.25 million dollars and includes improvements to the surrounding infrastructure.Casa Familiar says they got a 0,000 seed grant from Art Place America. They were able to pair that with a 2-for-1 matching grant from the PARC Foundation. That gave Casa Familiar more than a million dollars to begin the project. The Seattle Times reports Southall Environmental Associates scientist John Durban and marine mammal research director for the nonprofit SR3 Holly Fearnbach recently finished recording drone images of the endangered southern residents and discovered pregnancies amid the J, K, and L pods. According to SR3, whale pregnancies typically last 17-18 months.Pregnancies are not unusual but Tahlequah's pregnancy carries special meaning for a region that grieved the death of her calf along with her. The southern residents are struggling to survive, and most pregnancies are not successful.SR3 says the unsuccessful pregnancies are due to lack of food and nutrition and there are only 73 whales in population. 881

Schools in the U.K. are removing analog clocks from exam rooms after students complained about not being able to read the time, according to The Telegraph.Malcom Trobe, deputy general secretary at the Association of School and College Leaders, says students are accustomed to using digital devices today."They are used to seeing a digital representation of time on their phone, on their computer," Trobe told The Telegraph. "Nearly everything they've got is digital so youngsters are just exposed to time being given digitally everywhere."Teachers are concerned about students stressing out during exams because they can't keep track of time. SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV)  -- A former navy corpsman who's saved hundreds of lives says she was only doing, "What any American would do". Gina Austin could not take seeing the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. She packed up kayaks, jet skis and supplies and headed to Texas where she helped save people and pets. Austin makes it sound simple. But she was elbow deep in devastation for a week. Her first rescue was a tiny one."We found a little Chihuahua and we were calling her baby girl," she said, noting that she worked with a rescue group to help save thousands of animals. "People had chained their animals up so we actually had to go in with bolt cutters. There were dogs just clinging to cars..."At one point, Austin said she saw a family in a steel boat paddling toward her with shovels. "And they asked… did anybody see a little Chihuahua?" Austin said. The family was describing girl baby girl, her first rescue. That day, the family was reunited.  995
