BEIJING, July 15 (Xinhua) -- At least 135 people had been confirmed dead and 41 are missing, as some of the worst flooding in years continues in south China.By 4 p.m. Thursday, close to 35.5 million people in 10 southern provinces and Chongqing Municipality had been affected by continuous rainstorms and floods since July 1, the Civil Affairs Ministry said in a notice on its website.About 113,000 homes were destroyed and more than 1.2 million people had been relocated, it said.Direct economic losses were estimated at about 26 billion yuan (3.8 billion U.S. dollars), up from Wednesday's 22.2 billion yuan.In Jiangxi Province alone, at least eight people have died since July 8, and direct economic losses have amounted to more than 2.9 billion yuan.The ministry had dispatched work groups to Jiangxi to direct relief work.The Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters announced earlier Thursday that floods had killed 594 people in 26 provinces since the beginning of the year. Another 212 people were missing.Direct economic losses cause by the floods totaled 120.2 billion yuan, the office said, adding that 97.5 million people and 6.16 million hectares of farmland were affected.In Hubei Province, continuous downpours and rain-triggered floods since July 3 have left 32 people dead and two missing.Heavy rainfall has raised water levels in many rivers in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River, China's longest, and a new round of rainstorm is expected to pelt the river course soon, bringing possibility of serious floods.The river's Three Gorges Dam raised the speed of water discharge Thursday afternoon to save space for the upcoming gushing flooding waters.

BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- The State Administration of Civil Service Thursday announced a plan to select personnel for central government organizations from the grass-roots level.In all, 30 civil servants will be selected and assigned to 11 ministry-level organizations such as the ministries of foreign affairs, education, agriculture and culture.Civil servants working in government organizations in the province, city, county and village levels can apply for these posts.However, those at the provincial level will have to have two-years of grassroots work experience while village-level civil servants must have at least three-years of work experience.The written test and interview for the selection will be held in September.According to a statement released by the administration, the plan aims to create a system of cultivating civil servants from the frontline and grass-root levels for optimizing the structure of civil servants in central government departments.

TASHKENT, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Liu Yunshan, a member of the Political Bureau of the Coummunist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, and Uzbek Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyayev on Wednesday vowed to boost bilateral ties.Liu, also a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and head of Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, said China was willing to work together with Uzbekistan to boost bilateral cooperation, especially in media, publishing and culture.Liu said bilateral ties had strengthened in recent years and he thanked Uzbekistan for its support of the core interests of China. Liu Yunshan (4th R), a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, also a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, meets with Uzbek Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyaev (3rd L) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Aug. 25, 2010.Mirziyayev said China had been a true and sincere friend to Uzbekistan and relations with China had been a diplomatic priority for his country.Mirziyayev reiterated Uzbek support for China's positions on the issues of Taiwan, Tibet and the fight against three evil forces of extremism, separatism and terrorism.Liu arrived in Uzbekistan on Monday for a goodwill visit. BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- The Supreme People's Court (SPC) of China on Tuesday urged courts across the country to accept scrutiny by the press and general public.The courts must constantly listen to the public so they can carry out their work in a better way, Shen Deyong, executive vice president of the SPC, told a national conference on the publicity work of courts.After hailing achievements of the courts in providing information to the public, Shen said some courts did not pay enough attention to public opinion."The public are paying more attention to court work, their expectations are growing. They want to know more, participate more and supervise more," he said.Shen urged courts to disclose information on major issues in a timely fashion, so as to avoid public suspicion and damage to judicial authority.The Supreme People's Court will train spokespeople and publicity officials of courts nationwide in the second half of the year.
