Republicans are reportedly seeking to extend increased unemployment benefits in the next round of COVID-19 stimulus, but at a much lower rate, according to The New York Times and The Washington Post.Both The Times and The Post report that Republican lawmakers are prepared to introduce a stimulus package that would continue increased unemployment insurance, but would reduce weekly aid from 0 a week to 0 a week.The 0 federal payments, put in place by the .2 trillion CARES Act that was passed in March, expired over the weekend.According to both The Times and The Post, the Republican plan would offer the 0 insurance for two months, during which time states would need to develop their own plans that would pay unemployed workers 70% of what they were making prior to the pandemic.Many Republicans argue that the 0 a week payments created an incentive for those unemployed to not work, arguing that many were receiving more in unemployment insurance than they would if working.Democrats favor extending the 0 payments through the end of the year with the HEROES Act — a stimulus package that passed through the House in May. The Senate has not yet taken action on the bill.On Friday, Democrats argued that Republicans needed to work with them quickly in order to get payments to those that need them. Rep. Danny Davis, D-Illinois, argued that the benefits were needed because COVID-19 made it too dangerous for some to work, made others unable to work due to lost jobs, and made childcare more difficult due to the closure of schools.Pelosi slammed the Republicans' delay in her press conference Friday, calling it a "dereliction" of their duty. She asked that Republicans "get something on paper" so that Democrats and the American people could see their plan.Republicans have promised to propose new stimulus legislation in the coming days. 1873

President Donald Trump tweeted early Friday morning he and first lady Melania Trump have tested positive for the coronavirus. "Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19," Trump tweeted. "We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!"The president confirmed late Thursday that Hope Hicks, a senior White House staffer who serves as counselor to the president, was infected with the coronavirus."The White House medical team and I will maintain a vigilant watch and appreciate the support provided by some of our country’s greatest medical professionals and institutions," Dr. Sean Conley, physician to the president, said. "Rest assured, I expect the President to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering and I will keep you updated on any future developments."While Conley is optimistic for the president's recovery, according to CDC guidance, given Trump's weight and age, he is at an enhanced risk of complications from the coronavirus. "Hope Hicks, who has been working so hard without even taking a small break, has just tested positive for Covid 19. Terrible! The First Lady and I are waiting for our test results. In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process!" Trump tweeted Thursday evening.Her infection was first reported by ABC News and Bloomberg.Hicks was on board Air Force One during Trump’s trip to Minnesota yesterday, and to Cleveland on Tuesday. Photos taken by the Associated Press on Wednesday show Hicks was in close proximity of several other senior staffers, including Jared Kushner, Stephen Miller and Dan Scavino. ABC News reported that Hicks was on board the presidential helicopter Marine One with the president on Wednesday. None of the staffers were seen wearing a mask entering Marine One. It's unclear how long President and first lady Trump will quarantine. President Donald Trump says he will unveil his nominee to replace Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Saturday.Trump tweeted Monday that he will announce his nominee at a White House press conference Saturday at a time to be determined.During an appearance on Fox & Friends on Monday morning, Trump hinted that his nominee could be coming "Friday or Saturday." (AP) — A Kentucky couple who refused to sign a self-isolation order when one tested positive for the coronavirus said they were placed under house arrest.Elizabeth Linscott of Radcliff told news outlets she was tested July 11 for COVID-19 because she wanted to visit her grandparents and received a positive result the next day. Linscott said the health department emailed her a form to sign that said she would check in daily, self isolate and let officials know if she has to be treated at the hospital.The form said the isolation order is to “prevent the introduction, transmission and spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus in this state.”Linscott said she declined to sign because of one sentence: “I will not travel by any public, commercial or health care conveyance such as ambulance, bus, taxi, airplane, train or boat without the prior approval of the Department of Public Health.”“I could not comply to having to call the public health department prior if I had an emergency or I had to go pick something up for my child or myself as a necessity and could not wait,” Linscott said.When she declined to sign the form she said she was told the case would be escalated and on July 16, Linscott said she and her husband were placed under house arrest with ankle monitors.Hardin County Sheriff John Ward said his office was on hand to execute court documents from a Hardin County Circuit Court judge.
