SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The state agency that protects California consumers by licensing and regulating the state’s construction industry received more than 30 complaints about a San Diego County-based business.A Team 10 investigation discovered some customers who said they signed a contract with American Pride Enterprises, paid thousands of dollars up front and were left with little or nothing. The Contractors State License Board revoked American Pride Enterprises' license for non-compliance with an arbitration award in July of 2018.An outdoor cover to block the sun was the final piece in what had been a total backyard transformation for the Zimmerman family.“We were just looking to put a patio cover over our east-facing patio,” said Jim Zimmerman.Zimmerman said in 2017 he hired American Pride Enterprises and its owner Stephen Hage to do the work.He said there were no red flags. The company was licensed, bonded and at the time there were no real complaints online.“We paid just under ,200,” Zimmerman said. “That was to cover materials, and he was supposed to come back in three weeks and complete the job. That was the last time we ever saw Stephen Hage.”Zimmerman told Team 10 Hage initially offered to pay the money back, but instead of getting a check Zimmerman got excuse after excuse about why the money hadn’t arrived.Eventually, Zimmerman said the evasion tactics were too much and he sued Hage in smalls claims court.Zimmerman says he got some of his money back.A Team 10 investigation discovered Zimmerman isn't alone.Team 10 was in court when several people who claim Hage swindled them reached an agreement with his bonding company, getting some of their money back.James Francois said he paid Hage more than ,000 for a patio.“He never showed up, never delivered any material, never did an hour of work,” Francois told 10News.Court documents show more than 20 names listed on the lawsuit filed by the bonding company, which seeks reimbursement from Hage.A spokesperson for AmTrust told us, “This is a claim filed under a contractor’s license bond issued to our principal, American Pride Enterprises, by Wesco. Due to the claims we have received exceeding the aggregate ,000 bond limit, we filed an interpleader (a way for a holder of property to initiate a suit between two or more claimants to the property) to pursue funds that would be distributed to the named consumers, assuming the principal does not resolve the claims that have been presented.”  Court documents show Hage filed for bankruptcy in July, and list his estimated liability around 0,000. In bankruptcy people trying to get money can’t access the assets until the bankruptcy is resolved.Team 10 tried to track down Hage, but no one answered the door at his listed address.The Contractors State License Board told Team 10 through a spokesperson:  2964

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thousands of people enjoyed San Diego County beaches, despite the ongoing Beach Hazard Warnings.The National Weather Service announced there would be high surf, high tides, and strong rip currents on the San Diego County coastline. This Beach Hazard Warning continues until Sunday. Whether you're playing, laying, or even working on this July 4th holiday, spending time at Mission Beach was a dream come true. Especially if you were the Newman family, escaping the Phoenix heat. "When we left, I think it was 114 degrees," Bryant Newman said. They said it just doesn't compare. "We used to hang out a lot at the resorts there locally [in Phoenix], but we have been coming to California for Fourth of July for the last for five or six years," Newman said.But let's not forget about the Beach Hazard Warnings, still in effect until Sunday. "They did warn us about high surf before I left the hotel this morning," visitor from LA, Saira Kinuthia said. Kinuthia is not letting her two boys out of sight. She said while they are here for fun, safety comes first. "We had our talk, and if the lifeguard says that we need to come out of the water, then we have to come out of the water," Kinuthia said. While most of the patrols were for alcohol, officers were also regulating the new e-scooter rules that took place on July 1st. Riders must slow down to 8 miles per hour on the boardwalk. But 10News saw many people zooming by. One was an accident between a double-rider and an elderly gentleman, walking on the boardwalk. All parties were okay. SDG&E warning that with high fire danger, some customers may be in the dark for the start of Christmas Eve.Billy Joyce is one of those customers.“You definitely start to think about it as you sleep, as you’re awake,” said Joyce.He lives with his family and ranch full of horses in Alpine. That’s a lot of mouths to feed when you may be in the dark.“Are we going to have to worry about evacuating?” said Joyce. “What’s going to happen to our animals? All that stuff you start to worry about.”He has a generator that will run the well and some lights, but it doesn’t power everything.“You can’t start the oven or you can’t start you range, you can’t have all the lights on,” said Joyce.That rage and oven are vital tools he needs to not only feed his family, but the 75 other people he’s making holiday dinners for.“Knowing the power would go out we had to start cooking at 5:00 this morning. I didn’t know if it was going to get shut down at 9 a.m. or what have you,” said Joyce.The chef and for Dinner Bell SD raised more than ,000 to helps those who would otherwise go hungry. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Blood Bank will test all blood donations for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies from now through the end of July.The blood bank says it will use those test results to help identify people who can donate convalescent plasma. Donors who test positive for antibodies will be able to donate COVID-19 convalescent plasma the next time they donate.The plasma can then be used to treat coronavirus patients.The test will be able to detect if a person's immune system has developed COVID-19 antibodies, whether or not the person showed symptoms. It will not detect if a person has an active infection or recent exposure to someone who is infected.To donate, donors must be at least 17-years-old, weigh 114 pounds, and be in overall good health. The blood bank says the test is authorized by the Food and Drug Administration for emergency use. All reactive and nonreactive results will be reported to the California Department of Public Health. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This New Year’s Day organ donor heroes will be honored on the Donate Life Rose Parade Float.One of those heroes is a Everardo Martinez, a San Diego father of three whose life was cut short by a fatal aneurysm. After Martinez passed, his wife Adriana worked closely with Lifesharing San Diego to donate his organs.“It’s comforting, it’s comforting to know my husband lives on through those recipients,” said Adriana. “I’m deeply honored my husband was able to transform their lives.”Everardo was able to save three lives with his selfless gift.His wife and children traveled to Irwindale to help decorate the Lifesharing float that will honor Everardo and 43 other organ donors. Adriana also spent eight hours on a floral portrait of her husband that will be featured on the float. “It’s an honor, a true honor to be able to honor my husband’s legacy and memory,” said Adriana.
