SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State University will not begin any of its fall sports earlier than Sept. 26 due to the ongoing pandemic, the university's athletics department announced Thursday.This follows guidance from the Mountain West Conference Board of Directors, which decided Wednesday to adjust conference team schedules to allow additional monitoring of ongoing COVID-19 developments and adjustments to keep student-athletes safe.The SDSU Aztecs football team will shrink its schedule to 10 games and most other fall sports will only play conference opponents."The Mountain West athletic directors and the conference office worked hard to develop a game plan for fall sports that will allow student- athletes to have a great experience and take in to account their health and well-being," said SDSU Director of Athletics John David Wicker. "Starting the season later allows us the opportunity to learn from professional sports and other conferences and continue to develop the best protocols possible to ensure the safest return to play model possible."The conference and school schedules align with the NCAA Board of Governors' directions, also released this week. The fall season will also continue to be evaluated in the context of the virus on campuses and within communities, and will be subject to directives from local, state and federal leaders."Should further modifications become necessary, including delay or cancellation of competition, the MW Board of Directors is prepared to do so," a conference statement said.The football team, coming off a 9-3 season including a blowout bowl win against Central Michigan, is also dealing with a new but familiar head coach.Head Coach Brady Hoke coached the Aztecs for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. "It gives us an opportunity to make sure our protocols are in place for the safety and health of the student-athletes, the staff, the athletic trainers and everyone associated with the program. We will continue to be smart as coaches and players on how we proceed."The SDSU cross country team is still awaiting an evaluation of its schedule. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's unadjusted unemployment rate rose to 3.3% in June, the first increase in the rate since March, according to data released Friday by the California Economic Development Department.The county's unemployment rate rose from an adjusted 2.7% in May to 3.3% in June. The unemployment rate had steadily declined for much of the year's first half, save for a one-tenth increase from 3.5% in February to 3.6% in March.3.3% in June. Despite the unemployment rate increase, the county's total nonfarm employment increased by 7,100 jobs, from 1,510,200 in May to 1,517,300 in June. Month-over-month farm employment stayed steady at 9,000. Multiple industriesshowed month-over-month job gains in the thousands, according to EDD data.The leisure and hospitality industry added 3,400 jobs from May to June, the most of any industry in the county. Much of that increase, per the EDD, was due to businesses like casinos and hotels bulking up their staffs for the summer. The construction, government and manufacturing industries also showed month-over-month gains of more than 1,000 jobs.Despite the month-over-month increase, the county's unemployment rate remains below last year's June rate of 3.6%. Nonfarm industries added 25,700 jobs from June 2018 to last month while farm employment dipped year-over-year from 9,700 to 9,000.The professional and business services and educational and health services industries added 8,000 and 7,400 jobs, respectively, far and away the most in the county year-over-year. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Poll watchers will be permitted to observe election activities at polling stations countywide on Nov. 3, though COVID-19 related restrictions will limit the number of people allowed inside polling places.Social distancing requirements mean only about one to two observers might be rotated in and out of the polling places at any given time this year, Assistant Registrar of Voters Cynthia Paes said Thursday.The number of polling places in San Diego County has been reduced from 1,548 in March to 235 larger polling places that will be open for four days and are each expected to be staffed by about 15 county employees, Paes said.The role of poll watchers has garnered increased attention as part of the national discussion on voter fraud and voter intimidation sparked most recently by President Donald Trump's call at Tuesday's presidential debate for his supporters to monitor polling places on Election Day.Trump, who has frequently raised the specter of voter fraud and publicly expressed doubts over the security of mail-in voting, urged supporters Tuesday to "go into the polls and watch very carefully because that's what has to happen."Tony Krvaric, chair of the San Diego County Republican Party, said recruiting poll watchers is a typical practice, intended to ensure votes are cast and note any irregularities in the voting process."We always recruit for poll watchers and have done so for as long as I can remember," Krvaric told City News Service."Poll watchers help make sure Republicans who haven't voted are contacted and reminded to do so and keep an eye out for any irregularities. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Bengal tiger cub rescued during a smuggling attempt at the US-Mexico border was joined Monday by a Sumatran tiger cub from the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.The Bengal tiger was discovered last month at the Otay Mesa border crossing last month and taken to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park for care.RELATED: Smuggled tiger cub found at US-Mexico borderThe Sumatran tiger that joined the cub in San Diego is nine-weeks-old. He has been fed by humans since last month because his mother became aggressive toward him. Zoo personnel said the cub would "chuff" in a friendly tiger greeting but his mother, Damai, would not respond.Animal care staff from the Safari Park were on hand at San Diego International Airport to meet the cub and the keepers upon their arrival. The young tiger was immediately transported to the Safari Park’s Ione and Paul Harter Animal Care Center, where he will continue to receive the care he needs.“We are beyond thrilled to welcome this tiger cub to the Safari Park,” said Andy Blue, associate curator of mammals at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. “His keepers reported he did extremely well during the flight — slept most of the way.
