In central Missouri, there’s a city of about 5,000 residents. But the small community is getting some national attention, thanks to one of its beloved residents. Lyn Woolford is not only Ashland, Missouri’s police chief, he ensures the children of Ashland get to school safely by directing traffic every morning. "Leadership includes participation," Woolford says. Crossing guard and police chief are just a few of the many hats Woolford wears. But even with so much responsibility as the newly appointed police chief, Woolford says he couldn’t give up his crossing guard gig after six years. “Evidentially I have a knack for this, and I do it well,” he says. That's why the school got together this year to let Chief Woolford know they appreciate his commitment. They nominated him for a special recognition, and Woolford won! The chief was named “America’s Favorite Crossing Guard” by the group Safe Kids Worldwide. His award earned the Southern Boone School District a ,000 prize to continue keeping roads safe. 1032
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — School officials at Blue Valley School District in Kansas say they are having a problem with students vaping at school. The problem is so severe that school officials are calling it an "epidemic." "Students have been caught vaping in classes, in our hallways, in our bathrooms," said David Stubblefield, Blue Valley's executive director of school administration. "Kids have come to us and said they cannot sit through an entire class without vaping." According to the school district, vaping usage has increased among students in high school year after year. The district has also seen students vaping in middle school. Every day, principals are dealing with some problem involving vaping, Stubblefield said. "A lot of times there’s not a long-lasting smell to it and the vape can dissipate very quickly. They are so easily concealable because they look like normal, everyday devices, like a USB," Stubblefield said. To combat vaping, the school district is focusing on education. Tuesday night, the district hosted an open house for parents and students to learn about potential health risks associated with vaping. The district also changed 1175
JT Lewis, the brother of 6-year-old Jesse Lewis who was killed in the Sandy Hook shooting, is running for Connecticut state senate.He'll be challenging Republican state Sen. LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas tennis instructor filed a lawsuit in federal court on Thursday accusing a Nevada country club of firing her because of her biracial daughters.Lawyers for Carmel Mary-Hill say they've been negotiating a settlement with Red Rock Country Club after the club allegedly discriminated against the tennis pro based on race.But, after feeling like the country club blew off her claims, Mary-Hill says she had no choice but to file the explosive 30-page lawsuit.In it, she accuses Red Rock Country Club of firing her after a member complained about her biracial daughters attending an annual tennis tournament."I’m OK with them attacking me because I’m in adult and I can handle it, even though it hurts me. But when you attack a 3-year-old and a 5-year-old because they are mixed, that’s not OK with me," Mary-Hill said.Mary-Hill also claims her daughters were denied from Red Rock's daycare while her white coworkers were allowed to drop off their children at the same facility."Attitudes and people change. We’re talking about two little kids here and I don’t understand how people can be racist. It’s not normal," she said.Mary-Hill says not only was she fired from Red Rock Country Club, but she was banned from ever coming back after filing a complaint with the Nevada Equal Rights Commission, or NERC.NERC and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission both found probable cause for discrimination and retaliation charges against Red Rock Country Club. Neither opted to take legal action, but the EEOC issued a "notice of right to sue," which opened the door for Mary-Hill to take action."It’s definitely going to help because the Nevada Equal Rights Commission did its own investigation and after doing the investigation, which took about two years, they concluded that there was probable cause of race discrimination and retaliation against my client," said F. Travis Buchanan, Mary-Hill's attorney.Mary-Hill says she's denied her daughters the opportunity to go back to Red Rock Country Club. She claims her former boss told her that her daughters could come to the club, just not with their mother."He said, 'You can drop your child off and let them play the tournament,' and I’m like, 'Why would I drop my kids off at a place that was racist to them and me?' I’m not putting my daughter in that situation," Mary-Hill said.Mary-Hill says perhaps the hardest part of that decision was having to explain it to her daughters."My 8-year-old is like, 'Why can’t I go to the tournament? Other kids are playing at Red Rock.' Because I’m not allowed to go there," Mary-Hill said.Mary-Hill is now hoping this lawsuit will lead to institutional change when it comes to how Red Rock Country Club views race."This was never about money. Kroger announced on Tuesday a temporary pay raise for all of its frontline employees as the chain of grocery stores have seen a surge in demand. The an hour raise will be applied to hours worked from March 29 through April 18. This announcement is in addition to a bonus that the company announced last week. The one-time bonuses, which is 0 for part-time employees, and 0 for full-time workers, will be paid out on Friday. “Our associates have displayed the true actions of a hero, working tirelessly on the frontlines to ensure everyone has access to affordable, fresh food and essentials during this national emergency,” said Rodney McMullen, Kroger’s chairman and CEO. “The Hero Bonus is just one more way we continue to convey our thanks and gratitude not only to our existing associates but also to the more than 30,000 new hires who have joined in the past two weeks and those who will soon join the Kroger Family of Companies.”“Recently, we announced an appreciation bonus for our hourly frontline associates.
