CHANGSHA, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang on Monday called for faster construction of affordable housing.     "In the affordable housing projects lie the immediate interests of the people, especially low-income families," said Li at a working conference on the issue in Changsha, capital of the central Hunan Province.     He said affordable homes could increase investment and stimulate consumption, and were an important measure to deal with the global financial crisis and to maintain economic growth.     The government has pledged that 7.5 million affordable homes will be provided in cities, and 2.4 million in forest districts, reclamation areas, and coal-mining regions by the end of 2011. This year, 2.6 million urban and 800,000 rural homes would be built. Another 800,000 rural homes in poor condition will be renovated.

BEIJING, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Sunday held phone talks respectively with U.S secretary of state and foreign ministers of Russia, Japan and South Korea on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK) launching activity.     China has noticed the DPRK's announcement of having launched an experimental communications satellite and taken note of the concerns expressed by the relevant parties on this issue, Yang told his counterparts of the U.S., Russia, Japan and South Korea Hillary Clinton, Sergei Lavrov, Hirofumi Nakasone, and Yu Myung Hwan.     China, as a close neighbor of the Korean Peninsular, has always been committed to safeguarding peace and stability on the Korean Peninsular and in the Northeast Asia region, Yang said.     The Chinese government lately has reiterated its stance on solving the issue through dialogue and consultation and opposing any actions that could complicate the situation and escalate tension, he added.     To push forward the six-party talks, build a nuclear-free Korean Peninsular and maintain peace and stability in Northeast Asia are in the interests of all parties concerned and also the common aspirations of the international community, said the Chinese minister.     He said the Chinese side urged all relevant parties to show restraint and avoid any moves that could further increase tension in the region.     China will address the current situation in a responsible and constructive manner, Yang said, noting that China is willing to communicate with all parties concerned to solve the issue properly.     China will join efforts with other parties to advance the six-party talks and safeguard peace and stability of the Korean Peninsular, he added.     Russian, Japanese, South Korean foreign ministers and the U.S. sectary of state also expressed their countries' willingness to continue exchanges of views and consultation with China on the issue.

BEIJING, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- Irrigation has covered 52.7 percent of the wheat farmland in drought-hit provinces in China by Saturday, said the Ministry of Agriculture.     A total of 85 million mu (about 5.67 hectares) of wheat land have been irrigated in eight drought-stricken provincial regions, the ministry told a meeting on Sunday.     Minister Sun Zhengcai said it is of importance to fully use machines in the fight against drought. BEIJING, March 18 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council (Cabinet) called Wednesday for thorough implementation of this year's government work report in face of the worsening global downturn.     Since the 2nd Session of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislature, endorsed the report delivered by Premier Wen Jiabao on March 5, it was now the task of the State Council and its subordinate bodies to implement the report, said the meeting chaired by Wen.     Government work this year should follow the main themes of coping with the financial crisis, promoting steady, relatively fast economic development, and fully implementing the stimulus plan to shore up the economy, it said.     Ministries should perform their duties, draw up and execute their implementation plans and coordinate with each other, it said.     The meeting said the global downturn was still worsening, and although some regions and trades in China had shown signs of recovery, difficulties still lay ahead.     It called for the establishment of surveillance and early warning system and immediate actions if problems were detected.     The meeting also approved in principle a medium- and long-term plan for forest fire prevention and a draft law on the armed police.     After further revision, the draft law goes to the NPC Standing Committee for deliberation

JINAN, March 17 (Xinhua) -- The Premier of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Kim Yong Il, has vowed closer cooperation with east China's Shandong Province.     Kim arrived in Beijing Tuesday before traveling to Jinan, capital of Shandong, on his first China trip as premier. The visit, made at the invitation of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, is scheduled to end March 21.     In a meeting with Shandong officials, Kim said the traditional bilateral friendship nurtured by leaders of the elder generations had witnessed sound development over the years.     Calling his China tour an important part of the China-DPRK Friendship Year, an annual bilateral exchange program, Kim said the DPRK is willing to further strengthen cooperation with Shandong in various areas including politics, economics and culture.     Shandong's Communist Party chief, Jiang Yikang, told Kim the province hopes to use the opportunity of the China-DPRK Friendship Year to carry out substantial cooperation with the DPRK.     Kim will conclude his visit to Shandong on Wednesday and return to Beijing for activities marking the 60th anniversary of the China-DPRK diplomatic ties.
