(AP) -- Rudy Boesch, a retired tough-as-nails Navy SEAL and fan favorite on the inaugural season of "Survivor," has died after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was 91.He died peacefully Friday night in hospice care in Virginia Beach, Virginia, surrounded by loved ones, said Steve Gonzalez, director of operations for the Seal Veterans Foundation.Boesch joined the Navy in 1944 and became one of the first SEALs in 1962. He served two combat tours during the Vietnam War, earning a Bronze Star for heroism, and retired from the Navy in 1990 as a master chief petty officer.Before his retirement, Boesch was honored as "Chief SEAL," or "Bullfrog." The title marks his time as the longest-serving SEAL still on active duty. He remained involved after he left the Navy, serving on the board of directors of the UDT Seal Association."He was a legend in the Seal teams long before 'Survivor,'" Gonzalez said. "Rudy was beloved by all and will be deeply missed."At 72, Boesch was the oldest contestant ever on the CBS show, taking third place the first year, 2000, on "Survivor: Borneo." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A proposed homeless housing project in the Mission Hills community might face a snag. Mission Hills Heritage is working on getting a historic designation for the old Mission Hills library on Washington Street. The building is one of several sites the city is considering for a public housing project. The city is looking to build permanent supportive housing. Permanent supportive housing is not a shelter. It's a space helped paid for by rental assistance and offers supportive services to assist homeless people with disabilities or homeless families with disabled family members. Barry Hager, with Mission Hills Heritage, says although there is some backlash from the community about the homeless housing project, his group is merely fighting to save history. They are not taking sides on the homeless housing issue, but their problem is the project would require the demolition of the building. He says the building is worth preserving because it was built in the early 1960s and is a prime example of mid-century modern or mid-century style architecture. “It’s really the only mid-century building in the commercial core area of Mission Hills,” Hager said. “This is really a preservation project, and preservation issue, not an issue about homeless housing.” A city says they are working to find out how a historical designation could impact any plans for the site, but for now, they are proceeding as planned. They sent the following statement: “Cities up and down California are facing a housing crisis. Here in San Diego, we are encouraging all types of housing, including permanent supportive housing. We are in the process of finalizing the RFP for several city-owned properties we identified in early May for permanent supportive housing, including the old Mission Hills Library. (AP) -- Lowe's Cos. is laying off thousands of employees at its U.S. stores as it outsources some of their duties to outside companies.The home-improvement chain, based in Mooresville, North Carolina, declined to say exactly how many employees were affected. But The Wall Street Journal reported that thousands of employees were told this week that their jobs were eliminated, which the company confirmed.Lowe's spokeswoman Jackie Pardini Hartzell said Thursday that the cuts are coming as the company moves to third-party assemblers and facility services to allow store associates to spend more time on the sales floor serving customers. Previously some store workers did assembly work, such a constructing floor models, and janitorial work. Hartzell said that employees in these positions will have the opportunity to apply for other open roles at Lowe's.She said the company is not disclosing how many are affected as the number of employees impacted varies by store and the company has a strong track record of retaining associates in other roles within the company.Lowe's, under its relatively new CEO Marvin Ellison, is trying to return its focus to its home improvement chain and streamline its business.After Ellison took the reins last year, he thinned executive positions at the company and began paring away weaker selling items in its stores. Lowe's also sold announced last summer that it was closing the 99 Orchard Supply Hardware stores it owns in California, Florida and Oregon.
