SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott was celebrating a reelection victory Wednesday, following a dominant performance over private attorney Cory Briggs."When I was elected four years ago, I pledged to put the people of San Diego first, and that's just what we've done," Elliott said in a statement Tuesday night claiming victory in the race."With the help of our terrific team in the City Attorney's office, San Diego is a leader in reducing gun violence, helping domestic violence victims, and holding corporate polluters accountable. We moved quickly to protect public health during the pandemic and we've made it a priority to safeguard taxpayer dollars. I'm humbled and grateful that the people of San Diego have placed their trust in me to fight for them for another term."Elliott has been city attorney since 2016, and since then has taken an uncharacteristically proactive approach to the role, sometimes ruffling feathers, such as with the Smart Streetlights program. In August, members of the San Diego City Council boycotted a meeting with Elliott over restrictions on sensitive documents.Briggs has sued the city dozens of times, ostensibly to increase transparency at City Hall. He said during the campaign he wanted to remove petty politics from the office."As someone who has spent nearly two decades fighting special interests at City Hall, I believe now's the time to bring my training, experience and taxpayers-first approach to the City Attorney's Office," he said.Elliott pointed to Briggs' many lawsuits as reasons she is more fit for the office. The pair have faced off in court during the election cycle. Elliot sued Briggs for identifying himself as a taxpayers' advocate, while Briggs sued Elliot for claiming an endorsement from the San Diego Union-Tribune after it expired. Briggs prevailed in both cases. The city attorney serves as the city's prosecutor and legal adviser.Meanwhile, San Diego voters weighed in on a trio of ballot measures:-- Voters rejected Measure A, a housing bond that would have allowed the city to issue up to 0 million in bonds to fund low-income, substance abuse, and mental health service housing. It required two-thirds of the vote to pass, but initial tallies showed it with only 57%.-- Voters approved Measure B, which amends the city's charter to replace the Community Review Board on Police Practices with the Commission on Police Practices, which will be appointed by the City Council to conduct investigations and subpoena witnesses and documents related to deaths resulting from police interactions and complaints made against police officers.-- Voters also approved Measure E, providing an exception to the city's long-standing 30-foot height limit in the Coastal Zone for the Midway- Pacific Highway Community Plan. The plan includes the Sports Arena. 2842

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Pac-Man is the newest inductee into the Comic-Con Museum's Character Hall of Fame, the San Diego-based museum announced Thursday.Pac-Man "is being honored as the original digital game mascot for his enduring impact he has had on the video game industry and the role of storytelling in games," according to the museum, which is scheduled to partially open in Balboa Park in mid-2021.The iconic, hungry yellow circle will be the second character in the museum's hall of fame. Batman was inducted in the hall of fame's inaugural year in 2019.This year marks the 40th anniversary of Pac-Man, which is the highest- grossing video game ever made, according to the museum. As of 2016, the game had generated more than billion in revenue."We thought Pac-Man would be the perfect addition to the Museum Character Hall of Fame because he inspires a sense of nostalgia in many of us and even though he is turning 40, he is still highly relevant in pop culture today," said Eddie Ibrahim, senior director of programming for the Comic-Con Museum. "Characters tell the stories of pop culture and what better time, when we are more digital than ever, to honor our first digital character."A live virtual induction ceremony will be held on Dec. 17 from 4 to 6 p.m. The ceremony will consist of a combination of interactive live stream elements and pre-recorded content and videos. For more information or to register to attend the induction, residents can visit https://donate.comic-conmuseum.org/pacman.Though the Comic-Con Museum is on track to open its doors at the 68,000-square foot Federal Building in the park's Palisades section in mid-2021, the museum will not be completed until 2024, with portions of it opening in phases until then.Pac-Man was created by Toru Iwatani and first released in Tokyo in May 1980. The game made its debut in the United States in October 1980.It took nearly 20 years for anyone to complete a perfect game -- finishing with no lives lost and the maximum number of points from each level, according to the museum."Pac-Man's enduring popularity and relevance speak volumes to his position as an icon in the video game and pop culture worlds," said Dennis Lee, director of brand marketing at BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America Inc. "As Pac-Man enters his 40s, he's still entertaining millions of fans around the globe with new video games and products featuring his likeness. We look forward to Pac-Man delivering more fun for everyone for years to come." 2503

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Animal Welfare Coalition today will join a nationwide effort to ``Clear the Shelters'' today for the duration of August. The campaign to get as many pets adopted as possible is a little different this year. The Clear the Shelters event, instead of being a single- day effort, will be a month-long adoption drive to allow for virtual adoption consultations by appointment. In addition to promoting adoptions, the campaign encourages donations to participating shelters.``San Diego Humane Society is excited to be working to ``Clear the Shelters,'''' says Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of San Diego Humane Society. ``This important nationwide campaign will give tens of thousands of animals throughout San Diego County a second chance.''Since 2015, the Clear the Shelters campaign has helped more than 410,000 pets find new homes nationwide.``The County of San Diego's Department of Animal Services shelters in Bonita and Carlsbad have many wonderful animals waiting to be adopted into loving homes,'' said Kelly Campbell, director of animal services for the county. ``While the pandemic has certainly created challenges for us all, now may be the perfect time to add a new pet to the family, especially if you find yourself spending more time at home.''The San Diego Humane Society said benefits of adopting a pet include being more affordable, knowing the animal has been assessed for behavior and medical conditions and allowing prospective owners to receive pet-specific resources. The society offers training advice, pet supplies and educational information to support pet families for the lifespan of a pet. ``During the pandemic, we have learned how to embrace change, and that change could include an adoptable pet,'' said Judi Sanzo, president of Rancho Coastal Humane Society. ``Shelters around the country want to remind you that your new best friend could be waiting, tail wagging and ready to join you while you work from home. While Rancho Coastal continues to match pets with their new families, it's important to remember that the virus may be temporary, but pets are a lifetime commitment.'' 2148
