Police released new details late Tuesday afternoon about a dog owner who gunned down two people inside a Port St. Lucie home the day before.Investigators said Guy Alexander Hansman, 55, and his daughter, Harper Hansman, 11, were shot and killed by their neighbor, identified as Ronald Delserro, 82, at a home on Monday.According to police, the violence stemmed from a dispute over the gunman's dog, a bull mastiff named Roxy. Earlier on Monday, the animal had been declared dangerous in court."They all came home from court and then the suspect armed himself and went to the victim's house," St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara said at a news conference.Authorities said that after police officers and deputies arrived at the scene on Monday, they entered the home and exchanged gunfire with Delserro, who was armed with two handguns. An officer was shot in the arm and was treated at the hospital and later released.A SWAT Team later discovered Delserro dead inside the house, according to police. It's unclear how he died.In a truly tragic development, police said Harper Hansman was the person who called 911 before her death.According to the Port St. Lucie Police Department, the feud dated back to March 4, when Delserro's bull mastiff attacked and bit a woman who lived at the victims' home. That eventually led to a court hearing in which the animal was declared dangerous."I believe this to be an intentional act of violence against these neighbors," said Port St. Lucie Assistant Police Chief Richard DelToro on Monday. "It's tragic. You can't rationalize irrational behavior."On Tuesday, 24 hours after the violent and tragic attack, crime scene investigators continued processing the scene. Around 12 p.m., Port St. Lucie Animal Control arrived and officers appeared to take an animal away from the community.A contractor said he saw the gunman's wife just moments after the shots rang out."She said, 'I hope he didn’t do something stupid,'" Ray Layfield said. Port St Lucie Animal Control just pulled up as well. We have been told they are not currently commenting on the investigation or ongoing dispute about the dog. @WPTV @FOX29WFLX pic.twitter.com/qpw7deJebQ— Ryan Hughes (@HughesWPTV) July 7, 2020 Police said several officers have been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues. The COVID-19 pandemic has shined a bright light on healthcare professionals and the need for more across the country.Xavier University, in Cincinnati, is working to fill the shortage by launching new programs across the state of Ohio. The college just added a third accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree based in Cleveland. It's a fast-paced program where students can earn a ABSN degree in just 16 months.“It’s been interesting with the pandemic and COVID to start a new program but we were very prepared," said Dr. Sandra Harris.Dr. Harris is the associate director of Cleveland's ABSN program. She said the first class, which began in May, consisted of just nine students, but that grew to 41 with the second class which began in August. Dr. Harris said the hope is that each cohort is comprised of 70 students to reach full capacity."It's been very positive," she said. "The students are excited to be here." The 16 months consists of 63 credit hours of online and onsite learning. The students complete the coursework online, take simulation labs at the Learning Center, based in Independence, and work alongside trained, professional nurses for clinicals partnering with the Cleveland Clinic.Though the pandemic is causing some roadblocks for students, the program came at an opportune time. Ohio, and much of the nation, is currently facing a shortage of nurses and healthcare professionals.“In acute care, in rehab and the emergency departments," Dr. Harris said. But the field has growing interest. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of registered nurses is expected to grow 7% from 2019 to 2029 - faster than the average for all occupations.Breanna Harper is one of the 41 students currently enrolled in the program. She earned a four-year degree earlier this year from Drexel University, located in Philadelphia, but she's hitting the books once again hoping to fulfill her dreams of becoming a nurse."It's what I'm passionate about," she said. "I've been taking care of people my whole life. I just want to help people feel their best self."The young professional moved to Cleveland from Vallejo, California specifically for the Xavier program and its affiliation with the Cleveland Clinic.“It's the perfect environment to learn what you need to learn to be a nurse. It’s a dream come true almost. You can’t ask for a better clinical experience," she said.Harper is currently working inside the Cleveland Clinic to earn her clinical hours. She said seeing the healthcare professionals in action has given her a new appreciation for their work."It takes a lot of love and a lot of dedication for what you're doing to come into work 12 hours, sometimes more, every single day with a smile on your face and you're not showing any strain or stress meanwhile they have other stuff going on like kids or a family," she said. "It's a lot of respect I have for them and it just shows how passionate you have to be to be in this type of field."Collin Ninke is also enrolled in the program. He said the program is certainly tough but he's enjoying the hands-on experience inside the hospitals.“It’s been tough. It’s been a handful but they give it to you in a really scheduled out way," he said.Ninke said he hopes to work inside an intensive care unit or emergency room after graduating next December. For Harper, her dream is to work inside a labor and delivery unit. Xavier's next 16-month program begins in January. For more information about what is required to sign up, click here. This story was first reported by Meg Shaw at WEWS in Cleveland, Ohio. 3638

For the last 30 years, Marina Tsaplina has taken insulin to survive. “I take anywhere between probably six to 10 injections per day, depending on what I need,” she says. “Certainly any time before I eat and any time I need to adjust my blood sugar.” Living with type 1 diabetes and no health insurance, Tsaplina bought a year’s supply of insulin in Canada, because she can't afford to buy it here in the U.S. “The insulin alone would be about from 0 to ,100,” she says. New research shows drug prices can vary greatly depending on the pharmacy. The U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) Education Fund surveyed more than 250 pharmacies in 11 states on prices for 12 common drugs. It found consumers could save anywhere from 0 to ,000 a year, simply by shopping around. “On average, over nine times the lowest price could be charged for a prescription drug that many people take,” says Lance Kilpatrick with U.S. PIRG. The study found chain pharmacies like CVS tend to have higher prices than mom-and-pop pharmacies. “Eight of the 12 drugs that we surveyed, mom-and-pop shops and small chain pharmacies actually had less expensive prices than the big chains,” Kilpatrick says. That's why U.S. PIRG says you should compare at least five pharmacies and try shopping online. Sites like Goodrx.com helps consumers find the best prices in your area. Pharmacychecker.com connects with verified Canadian pharmacies, since Canadian drugs are often cheaper. Additionally, Blinkhealth.com offers good pricing for generic drugs. With 1 in 4 Americans struggling to afford their prescription drugs, a little legwork now can save you a lot of money in the long run. 1677

It was not a quiet afternoon Monday at Madison Square Park.Brian Kemsley was walking with his girlfriend when he saw and heard a commotion on the Fifth Avenue side of Madison Square Park. He saw a man trying to rip away a stroller.“It's not a matter of stepping in it's a matter of duty, when you see a woman and her child screaming,” he said.He says the man was asked to let go of the stroller but kept reaching for the baby. The mother was also holding another toddler and everyone was screaming.Kemsley pinned him down and waited for police to arrive. It was captured by a witness on social media. Witnesses recorded video and called 911. Rangers arrived after about fifteen minutes and Kemsley says police took the man into custody. He was taken to a hospital and no one was hurt. PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — There is a group of retired ladies living in a Pinellas County RV park who have formed their own assembly line when it comes to making masks. They call themselves the Crafty Ladies of Sherwood Forrest RV Resort. They are making hundreds of masks a week, and because the bulk of them go to our veterans, patriotism is a big deal. The red, white and blue runs deep not just in their fabric but their spirit.“I feel helpless with what’s going on with the Covid and this is my tiny little way of contributing,” said Micheal Barsi.Barsi is one of more than a dozen residents who are part of the group. Most of them have two main things in common, they are skilled with a sewing machine and are part of a military family. For the past six years, the Crafty Ladies have been making quilts for the Service Source organization, Veterans Mall. However, when the pandemic hit, they shifted their needle and thread to make masks for veterans.“They had to sacrifice and people who had to sacrifice I want to help as much as I can,” said Nancy Barandon. The Crafty Ladies said the best part is the camaraderie, working together on a project that could save lives.“It does make us feel good to see people using them,” said Jeannie Powell.
