SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Health officials Wednesday confirmed the first influenza- related death of the 2019/2020 flu season in San Diego County. The county's Health and Human Services Agency reported that a 74-year- old Chula Vista man died Aug. 15 due to complications from Influenza B. The man, whose name was withheld, also had additional medical issues, according to county health officials. The county tracks flu activity year-round during each flu season, which corresponds with the county's fiscal year from July 1 to June 30. Health officials didn't confirm the first flu death in each of the last two flu seasons until October.RELATED: San Diego County records second case of measles this year"Influenza deaths can occur at any time since influenza circulates throughout the year," said Dr. Dean Sidelinger, the county's interim deputy public health officer. "The elderly, pregnant women and those with underlying medical conditions are at higher risk of developing complications from influenza."Since July 1, health officials have confirmed 106 flu cases throughout the county. At this time in the last two flu seasons, officials had confirmed just 26 cases in 2018 and 114 in 2017. The 2017/2018 flu season resulted in 342 flu-related deaths, the most since the county began tracking flu data nearly 20 years ago.The season's flu vaccine will not be widely available around the county until September, according to local officials. Certain local pharmacies and health clinics may have the vaccine before then, however. Residents can check if the vaccine is available near them by searching their ZIP code at cdc.gov/flu/freeresources/flu-finder-widget.html.County health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly advise the annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, especially in demographics with a heightened risk of serious complications.Residents can take precaution against contracting the virus by frequently washing their hands, cleaning commonly touched surfaces and avoiding contact with sick people."It's important to practice good hand hygiene and stay home if you are sick to avoid infecting others," Sidelinger said. "People should cover their mouth when causing and sneezing to prevent the spread of germs." 2274

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - NASA astronaut and UC San Diego graduate Kate Rubins arrived aboard the International Space Station Wednesday, where she and two Russian cosmonauts will conduct research over the next six months.Rubins, Sergey Ryzhikov and Sergey Kud-Sverchkov launched from Kazakhstan in the Soyuz MS-17 spacecraft and arrived at the station's Rassvet module at 1:48 a.m. PST following a two-orbit, three-hour flight, according to NASA.The trio joined Expedition 63 Commander Chris Cassidy of NASA and Roscosmos cosmonauts Anatoly Ivanishin and Ivan Vagner, who have been aboard the complex since April. Ryzhikov will become the commander when Expedition 64 begins Oct. 21 and Cassidy, Vagner and Ivanishin will depart for Earth. The spaceflight marks the second for Rubins and Ryzhikov and the first for Kud-Sverchkov, who will live and work aboard the outpost for six months, conducting research in technology development, Earth science, biology, human research and more. NASA says research conducted in microgravity will help prepare for long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars, in addition to improvements for life on Earth.According to NASA, Rubins became the first person to sequence DNA in space during her first spaceflight in 2016.She earned her bachelor's degree in molecular biology from UCSD in 1999, and a doctorate in cancer biology from Stanford University's Medical School Biochemistry Department and Microbiology and Immunology Department in 2005. 1477

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A roughly 36-hour spell of hazardously heavy surf will hit San Diego-area beaches beginning tomorrow, making the ocean extra dicey for surfers, swimmers and boaters. The large west swell is expected to arrive late Wednesday morning and generate waves of six to 14 feet in some locales, with the highest sets mostly occurring south of Encinitas, forecasters said. The anticipated conditions prompted the National Weather Service to issue a high-surf advisory, effective from 10 a.m. Wednesday to 10 p.m.Thursday, and a small-craft advisory, set to run from 6 a.m. Wednesday to 10 p.m. Thursday.Among the dangers posed by the rough local seas will be strong rip currents, minor coastal flooding and coastal erosion, according to the federal agency, which cautioned that entrances to harbors -- particularly Mission Bay -- will be difficult due to breakers large enough to capsize boats. The surf likely will peak late Wednesday into early Thursday, then slowly subside through Friday, the weather service advised. 1034

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As part of its weeklong Spooky Spokes Week, the San Diego County Bike Coalition will host a series of Halloween-themed events Thursday throughout the city. From 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 2 to 5:30 p.m., bike enthusiasts can arrive at the Pacific Beach Library at 4275 Cass St. location for the "Halloween Spoketacular" event featuring bike maps, spooky backgrounds for photos and children's trick-or-treat bags. The weeklong Spooky Spokes event encourages cyclists to ride all week long and to learn about bike safety, biking as a solution to climate change and bike-friendly routes in the community during multiple special events.According to the San Diego Association of Governments, San Diego County has seen a 42% increase in bike trips during the pandemic. With more riders on the road and with daylight hours shortening, the bike coalition said it recognizes the importance of bike safety education in the community."Even though riders still need to take safety precautions, including physical distancing, everyone can still get out and ride in the community," a coalition statement said.During Spooky Spokes Week, running through Sunday, San Diego bike riders will get the opportunity to win prizes by riding and participating in events like the Spooky Spokes Trivia night and the costume contest. At 4 p.m., the San Diego County Bike Coalition is partnering with the California Office of Traffic Safety to invite all bike commuters in costume to receive free front bike lights at the San Diego Central Library, 330 Park Blvd. All riders on bikes can head to the San Diego Central Library where coalition staff will encourage safe, nighttime commuting with free bike light installation, tips and important safety information about riding in the dark. The annual bike light giveaway aims to increase the visibility of riders on city streets. This year, LightMeUp Safety Lights will be available for purchase, as will wheel lights. The first 10 people in costume to arrive will get one free wheel light. Suja Juice will also be offering cold-pressed juices to those in attendance. Finally, at 6:30 p.m., the coalition will host a panelist webinar about "Biking as a Solution to the Climate Crisis." Panelists will cover a range of topics, including the benefits of sustainable transportation, safe bike infrastructure and the future of ebikes.More information about the events and the remainder of Spooky Spokes Week can be found at https://sdbikecoalition.org/event/spooky-spokes-week/.San Diego Bike Coalition is a nonprofit organization that advocates for the rights of all people who ride bicycles.
