SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A man suspected of gunning down a California policeman was in the U.S. illegally and was captured while planning to flee to his native Mexico, a sheriff announced as he all but blamed the state's sanctuary law for the officer's death.A two-day statewide manhunt ended Friday with the arrest of Gustavo Perez Arriaga, who came out with his hands up as a SWAT team prepared to raid a home in Bakersfield, California. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The VA San Diego Healthcare System began distributing its first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine Tuesday, Dec. 22.The VA received 2,800 doses of the Moderna vaccine, which is enough for their whole staff and everyone on their priority list. The first people to get the vaccine were people who either work or live in nursing care facilities and also people in the spinal chord injury unit. The VA anticipated being able to get all of those people vaccinated in the first day.Next for the VA are people in the ICU, emergency departments and those directly caring for coronavirus patients. It was estimated that all of those people should be vaccinated in the first day or two.Doctor Robert M. Smith is the director of VA San Diego Healthcare System and said their priority is getting people vaccinated quickly. He said they do not plan on saving any of the doses that are needed for a second vaccine 28 days after the first is injected. Rather, they will rely on the chain of command to get them those second doses in a timely manner, vaccinating as many people as they can in the meantime.“We and the rest of San Diego are seeing a huge increase in the number of COVID patients right now and it’s really straining resources so we need to make sure our staff can stay well so they can provide that care,” said Smith.Smith said they are starting with giving out 300 doses per day, hoping to be able to give up to 600 doses per day eventually. Once all staff are vaccinated in the next few weeks, the focus will be on the community and the 120,000 eligible veterans who are covered by the VA.He advised veterans in the community to not reach out to the VA, saying at first, the VA will be prioritizing some veterans and contacting those who are eligible, then eventually the VA will be more flexible with allowing other veterans to walk in and get the vaccine. 1888
SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Thanksgiving is just four days away, and preparations are already underway for the 17th Annual Father Joe’s Villages Thanksgiving 5K Run.Proceeds from the race and festivities go toward the one million meals the organization serves to those who need it every year. One of the biggest draws of the event is the pie made by the organization’s Culinary Arts program students. The students are making 300 pumpkin pies, 200 apple pies, and 100 blueberry pies ahead of the race, possibly more if they get additional pre-orders. The pies are served the day before Thanksgiving at the shelter downtown. The pies are also sold at Balboa Park on race day."These are individuals who come to us and were homeless and now we're trying to get them up on their feet,” Deacon Joe Vargas, President of Father Joe’s Villages, said.The students were once homeless but decided that cooking would help get them out of poverty. They are part of a 14-week intensive program, where 92% of graduates get jobs in the field.10News met Dorothea Sontag, a disabled Air Force Veteran, who was once a volunteer at Father Joe’s. When times got tough, she sought help from them."After my husband died, I hit hard times,” Sontag said. She lived out of her van until Father Joe’s took her in. Now at 62 years old, the former nurse's aid has a new aspiration. "I have a brother who's chef in Connecticut, so maybe it's in our blood,” Sontag laughed. Her instructor Theresa Fields said she is proud of Sontag for always pursuing perfection in the dishes she prepares. "They get a sense of pride that you can see on their face. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)—A group of small business owners and employees in San Diego County say the new reopening guidelines released by California Gov. Gavin Newsom Friday won’t help them recover after months of struggling.“We were really hopeful, then once we actually got this new color-coding system, it’s the same as nothing really to a lot of small businesses,” said Angie Weber, co-owner of Cowboy Star Restaurant and Butcher Shop in the East Village. “25 percent for a lot of restaurants is not enough to operate with.”Under the latest guidelines, restaurants can offer dine-in service at 25 percent capacity or 100 people, whichever is fewer.“We’ve done the math and think we can have 55 people in our building at any given time,” she said.Weber could not provide outdoor dining and spent a lot of money to prepare her restaurant for safe, dine-in services.“We went above and beyond. We added UV germicidal lighting into our HVAC ducts; we’ve gone to touchless checks and menus, we added glass partitions between our tables,” she said.A group of business owners, general managers, and other employees joined San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond outside of the county administration building Monday to call for looser restrictions.Desmond has been pushing for the reopening of businesses and said they can’t survive with the current capacity limits.“Everybody behind me is suffering because of this. I can’t pay my rent with 25 percent,” said Thomas Hall, General Manager for The Grass Skirt. “When my staff was told they had to leave and I didn’t know when we were going to hire them back, it completely broke my heart.”While some say the capacity limitations make it difficult for businesses to recover after operating at a loss, others say their industries have been entirely left out of any reopening plans.“I own a small event business called McFarlane Promotions. We shut down all our business and events on March 15,” said Laurel McFarlane, a small business owner and the founder of San Diego Event Coalition.“We let go of staff, we took out a second mortgage on our house, borrowed from friends and families if we could. We scrambled to make financially for the last six months, only to find out last Friday that we have been completely disregarded and undermined. The event industry wasn’t even listed.”McFarlane said she’s a mother of four children and the sole provider for her family. She said 90 percent of her business events were canceled, and she’s been unable to work for nearly six months.“It’s time for our leaders to invite us to the table,” she said.While Desmond has been in favor of reopening businesses, others are concerned that this could cause another spike in COVID-19 cases across the county.Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said in a Tweet, “My fear is that the breadth & speed of what we are doing could cause a spike in cases that would trigger us moving back to a higher tier and requiring additional closures. I would prefer a more cautious approach that gives us a higher probability of a smooth & steady recovery.”Businesses providing indoor services must have a sign-in sheet will customers will leave their name and phone number. Supervisor Fletcher said if there is an outbreak inside a business or entity, the list will help in notifying customers if they have been exposed to COVID-19. SAN DIEGO (KGTV): A program in San Diego is making it easier for military families and veterans to get the help they need to fight food insecurity.Courage 2 Call offers food giveaways twice a month to anyone with a military ID or any veteran."We don’t have any criteria for them to go through the line," says program coordinator Angela Nagel. "They just have had to serve. We don’t look at status. We don’t look at discharge status. We don’t look at income. If you have a VA card, if you have a military id, come to courage to call we will get you set up with the resources in San Diego."The program focuses on giving out fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as other pantry staples. Nagel says, at any given event, they'll serve up to 200 people."It breaks my heart to know that these military families have to go through our lines to get food," says Nagel. "I know for active duty it is a struggle to live in San Diego because of how expensive it is here. For active duty, they should not have to be going through these lines, but they do."Food insecurity has been called a "hidden epidemic" in the military. The San Diego Hunger Coalition says that 1 in 10 people who go to food banks have a military member in their family. The Coalition says low wages for enlisted members make it difficult to keep food on the table.Courage 2 Call is one of several military-focused programs that receive food from Feeding San Diego.
