CHICAGO, Ill. -- Scientists are continuing to develop new COVID-19 testing methods. Everything from throat swabs and saliva tests to breathalyzers are potential options. The federal government has ordered 150 million rapid antigen tests to help quickly identify cases in places like schools and disaster zones.Still, we're six months into the global pandemic and experts say we still need better and more frequent testing.Supply chain bottlenecks, long turnaround times and the looming flu season have many pharmaceutical companies scrambling for a better test.“There's been a great push and a lot of innovation has gone into developing new tests that might be able to be used in different scenarios,” said Dr. Emily Landon, an infectious disease specialist at University of Chicago Medicine.Abbott Laboratories’ sixth iteration of the COVID-19 test, known as “Binax Now,” is a compact credit card sized rapid test similar to a home pregnancy test.“You are receiving a nasal swab and then that swab is directly inserted into the card and there's a small pouch there that it's inserted into. Six drops of a buffer had been placed there prior to putting in the swab,” explained John Hackett, Junior Vice President of Applied Research and Technology at Abbott Laboratories.And though it does require a health care worker to administer, no specialty lab equipment is needed to process the antigen test. Results are available in about 15 minutes. The cost is apiece.“So, in 15 minutes you can look at the front of this test and if you see a single line, that would be the control line, and if there's two lines, that would indicate that the individual is positive for SARS-CoV-2,” said Hackett.The test was granted emergency use authorization by the FDA. It includes an app that allows people who test negative to display a temporary digital health pass for quick screening.The Trump administration quickly bought up 150 million tests for about 0 million.Officials say they are already beginning to deploy the tests to states, nursing homes, schools and areas hit hard by recent natural disasters.“These antigen tests however are fast and cheap, and it can be done really easily,” said Dr. Landon.Though, helpful in some scenarios, Landon cautions quick antigen tests like this can be less accurate and have a high false positive rate.“These tests aren't perfect and some of you have been in that situation with strep throat where you find that even if the test is negative that they send off a culture afterwards to make absolutely certain that you don't have strep throat and these tests are kind of similar,” she said.Still, experts say having a variety of testing options is beneficial. (KGTV) — The last two cottages to grace San Onofre Beach and replace the deteriorated trailers near Camp Pendleton will be dedicated Thursday.The Camp Pendleton Cottage Renovation Project has worked to replace 13 of the 30-year-old FEMA trailers at the beach with manufactured homes. The new cottages are build using metal roofs, composite siding, stainless-steel appliances, and furniture. Cottages are also constructed to include wheelchair accessibility, railings, and wider hallways for service members with special needs. Cathedral High School in Indianapolis announced the official name change of its entrepreneurship course to the "Chris Beaty Entrepreneurship Class."Chris Beaty was an Indianapolis business owner and former Indiana University football player who was beloved in the community.Beaty was one of two men who were shot and killed when violence erupted during police brutality demonstrations in Downtown Indianapolis. He was 38."There was so much pain caused by Chris's tragic murder, I felt it was too narrow to hear him only referred to as a former Cathedral and IU football player," Alex Purvis, who played football with Beaty at Cathedral High School in the early 2000's, said. "Chris was so much more than that, and I want to do my part to make sure his legacy continues at Cathedral."Purvis spearheaded the initiative to make the name change of the private school's entrepreneur course because he wanted to make sure Beaty was known for more than just football. Purvis says Beaty was not only an entrepreneur but says he was a friend, he was compassionate, and he always made people feel welcomed."He made everyone feel like a VIP. Few people have that ability," Purvis said.Purvis only knew Beaty for one year at Cathedral — but that was enough for Beaty to make an impact on Purvis.Purvis described himself as, "the smallest kid on the football team" his sophomore year, and Beaty was a senior star-athlete."Years later, when I started running into Chris downtown and various events, Chris always made me feel like I was the star quarterback on Cathedral's team. For no other reason than that was his genuine personality—he made people feel special. His warmth and positivity was infectious," Purvis said.Purvis said to best #LiveLikeChris, it's fitting to name Cathedral's entrepreneurship class in Beaty's honor. Beaty was always working on "the next big thing," Purvis said."I think the root of entrepreneurship is having the ability to take an idea and outlining the steps to make it happen," Purvis said. He was a doer, a leader, and a builder—his friends turned into business partners and vice versa."Both Cathedral High School and Indiana University have also created the "Chris Beaty Foundation Scholarship," in his honor."Using that foundation and exploring entrepreneurship in high school will hopefully open students' eyes to all of the possibilities they have in college and beyond. Students should know they are capable of creating their path, just like Chris Beaty did," Purvis said. "And they should know that they, too, have what it takes to live like Chris. (KGTV) - Carlsbad neighbors banded together to finish the hike of a woman who was stabbed to death in Hosp Grove Park.Dozens of hikers descended upon the trail Saturday afternoon, honoring 68-year-old Lisa Thorborg.Thorborg was walking or jogging, according to police, between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Monday when she was attacked.RELATED: Carlsbad police: Woman found dead on hiking trail was stabbed to death"We loved her, though many of us didn't know her. I didn't know her personally, but you could definitely tell she had a sweet spirit," Neighbor Theresa Dooley said.Dooley said she was shocked and deeply hurt by the news. She said neighbors had been discussing what happened on the Nextdoor app and organized a walk for Thorborg."Some would like to finish the walk she began, some of us might walk various areas of the park here," Dooley said.Dooley said they wanted to wash away the fear surrounding the park, "we don't want our parks taken away from us, we don't want to live in fear, we want to be able to enjoy this, we want families to be able to come out here."Dooley added she will be taking precautions now when she hikes, "as women, it's probably important to have a partner with us, someone that we're hiking with."A tipster led investigators to identify a suspect as white or Hispanic, 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet 3 inches tall, with a husky build and a tan complexion with dark hair.
