GENEVA, May 17 (Xinhua) -- The international community should have "a sense of urgency" in their efforts to realize the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Chinese Minister of Health Chen Zhu said here on Monday."The deadline of the MDGs is only five years away, and we are facing huge challenges at this critical moment," Chen told the annual assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO)."The international community should have sense of mission and urgency to reach consensus, coordinate actions, and accelerate progress," Chen said.Addressing delegates from the WHO's 193 member states, Chen said that despite the unremitting efforts of the international community, "the MDG health indicators of women and children have been improving slowly and the situations are far from optimistic.""China holds that health of women and children constitutes an important element in a country's national basic health system and it reflects the social and economic development level," he stressed.Chen said the attainment of the MDGs would be "a historical milestone," and he urged governments to share this responsibility and "take stronger measures."One of the proposals the minister made at the conference was to improve the health of the people, particularly women and children."The ultimate goal of social and economic development is better life and brighter future for the people, and health is the basis of good life," he said.To improve the health of the people, countries need to build a strong and powerful health system so that they can provide comprehensive health services and tackle public health emergencies, according to the minister."All countries should attach importance to the building of such a system with articulated political commitments and substantial input," he said.Chen also highlighted the importance for controlling chronic and noncommunicable diseases, which "consume large quantities of health resources and afflict social and economic development.""To ensure sustainable health, social and economic development, the international community should conduct researches and take more effective countermeasures in its fight against such diseases, " he said.The minister also called on developed countries to increase their assistance to developing countries so that they can improve their health system and be more capable of dealing with health challenges."Health is an eternal theme of mankind, and the attainment of the MDGs is our common pursuit. BEIJING, April 1 (Xinhua) -- China's average daily stock trading volume at the Shanghai Stock Exchange shrank 35.2 percent month on month to 96.85 billion yuan (14.2 billion U.S. dollars) in February, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) said Thursday.China's stock market was closed from Feb. 13 to 19, for the Spring Festival, the most important Chinese traditional holiday.Analysts held that trading was normally bleak in the Spring Festival month, as some investors preferred to cash in profits before going back to hometowns for family gatherings and some were cautious before the release of new economic data after the holiday.The Spring Festival fell in January last year. The daily average stock turnover was down 3.38 billion yuan to 65.4 billion yuan in January 2009 compared with December 2008, according to the PBOC.The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index edged up 110.58 points from Feb. 1 to 3,051.94 points on Feb. 26 this year, the last trading day in the month, the central bank said in a financial market report released Thursday on its official website.China's financial market kept its smooth run in January and February, said the PBOC.The Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.23 percent, or 38.32 points, to end at 3,147.42 points Thursday. BEIJING, May 8 (Xinhua) -- To achieve equitable development globally, China adheres to a principle of "common but differentiated responsibility" on climate change, a senior official said here Saturday.Xie Zhenhua, vice minister of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), made the remarks at the International Cooperative Conference on Green Economy and Climate Change.Xie's comments came a day after Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said that according to the principle of "common but differentiated responsibility," the international community should further clarify the mandatory reduction targets for developed countries and mitigation actions for developing nations."Developed countries discharged a great amount of greenhouse gases during their industrialization in the previous two centuries. That is the main cause of global warming," said Xie, one of China's leading negotiators for climate change talks. "That's why they should take most of the responsibility to reduce carbon emissions."Developed countries have already overused the earth's atmosphere for emissions, occupying what should be emission quotas for developing countries who are developing to meet their citizens' basic needs, he said."Developing countries are now beginning to industrialize.
